Here's some pics of my red-tailed boa and my BP.

I had Bud (I know it's a weird name, I was 12 lol) outside and my cat Lucky decided she needed some attention and had "nice surprise" when she reached me.
And a couple days ago I tried different poses w/ my BP inside. I don't have a really good place to take pics, so the sunlight conflicted w/ the lighting inside the house. (I turned it on cuz the sunlight shining through the window wasn't enough to take a decent pic.)
Last night, before feeding my boa I took a couple of pics, but only one wasn't blurry. The only good lighting was a lamp next to the AC, so that's what's in the background.
Haha, and just for kicks here's a pic of a fence lizard I found. (I was surprised cuz it was only 60 degrees outside.)

Watch out... that kitty could get killed by that snake easy lol. (or visa versa)

lol I'm not too worried, she's pretty tolerant. If shed gets upset she just walks away, it's the inside cats I need to keep him away from. But I keep a close eye on them just the same. :)

Nice Pics! My Evie (cat) loves to be near Sasha (BP) when I have her out and Sasha tends to gravitate towards Evie, not sure if it is out of Curiosity, warmth, or sizing her up as a snack. lol

One of my cats doesn't care about ANYTHING, but the other one (Vodka) is curious but very hesitant about my snakes. She sniffs and then any movement Kaybe does she LEAPS back in the air :p :p :p

Here's some recent pics of Cloud and Bud.
Cloud is now 22 inches and it looks like s/he might go into shed again soon.
Bud's still not eating, hopefully when it warms up he will, he hasn't eaten all winter.

Very neat snakes!

Its always a scare when snakes go off eating for awhile, it makes me a nervous wreck, my snakes are like my children.

Cloud is very nice looking and very well fed! Your boa has stunning colours for his age already, he's going to be wicked as an adult! My one cat won't leave my snakes alone lol, so I know what that's like. Great snakes, thanks for sharing!

Very nice snakes. That cat still makes me nervous. Memories of Odyssius keep popping up in my head.

Thanks Caylan! Every shed the pink gets more and more bright and s/he gets slightly lighter.
I don't mind my cats being around my snakes unless I have them out, I always make them stay out of paws reach and I sit close enough to push them away if they get too bold.

Here's some recent pictures of Cloud. She's growing really slow, I don't know why. I have a basking spot that is 90-95 degrees and a cool side that is 70-75. I feed her rat fuzzies once a week (I was feeding her every 5 days, but she was getting a bit overweight), although I will be feeding her hoppers now that she's outgrown them. I have had her for a little over 11 months, and she is 2.5 ft long.

Terranaut

She needs bigger prey. She is not fat. How long is she?
Also, adult mice have more calcium than hopper rats which is important for growth. (I sometimes mix it up with my smaller snakes)
Feed her rats that are thicker than she is at her thickest section.
Sorry if you already know this or if the pics are deceiving. No need to stuff her constantly but bigger food = bigger snake.

I normally feed her prey that leaves a good lump in her belly. She's 2.5 ft long. If it's a calcium problem, could I dust the prey in calcium? Or would the rats still be fine? It doesn't seem like boas do, but I don't want to get her hooked on mice. If I need to give her a few as well as rats, I will though.

I had no problem at all switching any of my snakes to rats. At first my hoggie didnt want them, but he had no choice...lol. The only one Im afraid to go from rats to mice is my jcp. She took a rat first and I really don't wanna get her hooked on mice. My boa ate mice as a wee one and now gobbles up jumbos like nothing. They have an appetite.

Terranaut
07-13-12, 09:48 AM
That lump should last a couple days at least.
When I feed mice I thaw them in the same bucket as the rats.
If they are marinated in rat scent I doubt you would have a problem. But we have 10 snakes. If you have just the 2 that may not be possible for you.

I'd just up the size of the rat item. You can probably get rats within the 75 gram range that should be sufficient. Boas don't need to grow fast. A year old at 2.5 feet isn't horrible. It's a steady growth. People generally need to see their snakes explode in size these days.

Yes, I'm okay with her size (although after testing out a sexing technique, I believe "she" is a "he"). Just as long as it's healthy, I'm happy.

So I fed Cloud 2 days ago. He normally goes through a dark phase several days after he eats, then lightens up. The last time I fed him, he never lightened up. Before I fed him, the last few "saddles" on the tip of his tail were still a bright red. Now, almost all the red is gone and the first few saddles of his tail are black, the rest are a deep mocha brown. These photos bring out the only red he has left due to the flash, which very little is visible in person. He is a lot darker than these photos show, but you can tell he's darker.

Came home after school one day and saw this...had to get picture before I took him down. Luckily it was only 40 watts since I've been keeping my windows and door shut, which keeps it quite warm in my room (high 80's) and I didn't need the higher wattage.

Here's Cloud on my arm to give a size reference. When I last measured him, he was 2 ft 8 1/2 in.
http://i1157.photobucket.com/albums/p600/dtr_2009_/IMG_1970.jpg

Bud normally only eats white rats, but we managed to get him to eat this one yesterday, he was pretty hungry after refusing the last 2 meals. And he seems to have gotten the swallowing part down pat. Took him like 10 minutes to find the head, because he was on the wrong end. :wacky:

I don't know, maybe, it's been a few weeks since I last measured him. He's definitely not 3 1/2 ft, though, as my ball python is, and Cloud's shorter than him.

Here's a better size reference for Cloud, as my arms and hands are so small. It is a 16 oz. bottle.

On Friday, it was actually warm enough to take my two goofballs outside. The sun was shining and it was in the 70's. They were out for about 10 minutes before the wind picked up and I had to take them back inside, but I was able to get a few good shots. :D

You're so lucky to have nice weather! I have to wait at least a couple months before I will be able to take anybody out. I'm sure they both enjoyed roaming out and about!

Cloud is looking great, and Bud looks nice and healthy. You have yourself some lovely reptiles :)

Yeah, the weather's jumping back and forth lately, but there's been a few warm days. We've still got a few weeks until it starts to even out. :) It's only supposed to be really cold a few more times, but it appears to be staying in 50's with some days in the 60's. Although, the last few days have been warmer than predicted, and today was about as warm as the day I took them out. Spring's around the corner, and I'm sure you'll start seeing warmer weather, too, before you know it! :D Once it starts warming up, a few months will feel like nothing. ^.^

Cloud is now 4.5 ft. I will be looking for someone else who can build a cage for Cloud, unless I can find a cheap ready-made one. I thought my dad would be able to do it, but I came home to an almost completed 2ft deep by 3 ft long by 1.5 ft wide cage.....Far too small for him. I had drawn out a plan and shown him pictures, but he wanted to do what he thought was best. I have no idea or experience on how to use woodworking tools. At least he didn't go with the full screen enclosure that was his original idea. How much longer can he stay in the the 115 qt tub while we get his enclosure made/look for one? He's growing between 2 and 3 inches about every three weeks.

Nice snakes! :) Since there's already been discussion about the cat near your snakes, I have three pits, and I don't know if anyone here has dogs, but whenever there are babies, and small kids around, they're very mellow, as if they know that they cannot be hyper. My dogs do that around my Python. They are super mellow, and they give him space, but they are always wondering what he is! lol But my Pit - Lab mix, Layla, has walked up, and licked him! Not like "oh! I wanna eat this!" Kind of lick... Just a friendly "What's this thing?" kind of lick. I was so surprised that she did that! It was very cute. :)
And she was so gentle about it, too! Was the cutest thing ever...

I probably don't update this as much as I should, but here's some photos of Cloud and Bud. I measured Cloud today at 5ft 1in, and he's starting to put on some weight. It's been really good for him to be moved into his new enclosure. Both Bud and Cloud recently shed. Cloud shed today, and Bud shed 4 days ago. Bud's been crawling around like he's hungry, but he refused the rat I got for him. Probably should've checked the color, because it's harder for me to get him to eat black rats than albino ones...he'll take it, but it takes twice as long. Tomorrow will be three weeks since he last ate, so he might also not be hungry. I usually can't get him to eat as often as 2-3 weeks. I had Cloud on a weekly feeding schedule of either one large rat or two mediums, but he's put on weight, just by looking at him, so I'll try him on a 2 week schedule. He'll be due for his next meal tomorrow.

Cloud from a little over 2 weeks ago, crawling in his tree. Hopefully I can add a few more branches.

Yes, I know I have a weird voice. It's why I don't like to talk in videos (you only hear me say a few words, but it's enough....). And I apologize for that ever-present blurry spot. The lens got scratched somehow, and I'm not sure where to take it to get it replaced.

The music in the background was either some sort of festival (which there's a lot of on Main Street), or it was one the neighbors once again supplying everyone on the block with soothing music. And the white thing was a towel, because I had dried him off a bit. This was before I figured out why he was staying in his water dish all the time.

Cloud's growth has started to slow down now, and he's growing at half the rate he was only a few months ago. He's growing 1in roughly every month now, instead of 2-3in. I measured him last week at 5ft 5in, so he's nearly 5.5ft. He was also weighed last month at 5lb 13oz.

Bud hasn't eaten since I got him to take a f/t rat two weeks ago, and today I tried again. I waved it around, and he ignored it, so I'm going to leave it in overnight. If he doesn't eat it, I'll put it back in the freezer and try again when I feed Cloud on Thursday.

Bud on my bed. Although I didn't handle him often before, I've stopped handling him except for cage maintenance, and I've added a few more hides to try to get him to eat. It hasn't worked yet, and he won't take the rats despite crawling around every night.

Cloud from above, next to one of my feet. He ate Thursday afternoon, so I took him out for a little bit since he was cruising around. He does still have a bulge, but he's started exploring sooner after he eats. So, I'm guessing it's about to step up his food size. I don't have any recent photos of Bud because I've been limiting handling with him, and he's just started to eat normally again! Just last month he was 1275 grams and he was eating once month for over a year, with weekly offerings. He shortened the time between feedings to every 2 weeks and about three weeks ago I weighed him at 1375 grams. Last week he gained weight and was 1470 grams. I weighed him a few days ago at 1530 grams. He's putting on weight, and I'm just so proud of him. The past two feedings I have gotten him down to once a week, and it's definitely doing wonders for him. He's been pretty voracious now that he's got his appetite going, and he sticks his head out in a ready position whenever I come to check on him. He gets fed mediums, and although going by weight he's big enough to take a large rat, I've tried them with him before and he can barely get them down, so he gets a medium every week. He's doing well on them and starting to gain weight, so I see no reason to change that.

Cloud is now 5ft 9-10in and he's 8-8.5lbs empty. He's started to get kind of wriggly during handling, and he isn't too keen on coming out about half the time. He never hisses or goes into a defense position, but he uses the lip of the cage for purchase and crawls as fast as he can out of my hands. As I'm pulling him out, more of him is moving to the other side of the enclosure than is being brought out by me. Once out, he stops struggling so much but he stays unusually active. I'm fairly sure it's because he's outgrown his large rats, so until I can get some 1lb rabbits, I'll either give him jumbos or a large rat and a medium. He still digests them in the same amount of time he usually does, but he's active much sooner and is more of a handful when I handle him. He crawls all over me, looping under my arms, around my waist, up to my shoulders and then my head and just generally climbing around. I set him down on the bed, and he'll just sit there and never crawls downs off of me even if I'm sitting down which is unlike him as he generally doesn't like to climb and will take the first chance to get off of me.

All just-about-6ft of Cloud in my hand. Sort of.

He grabbed onto this as I was bringing him out, and I just went with it so I could grab some photos.

The entirety of Cloud's tail. You can just see one of his spurs above the top of my hand, in the shadow. He has this weird habit of holding his tail straight like this if I straighten it out, until I either push it back down or he starts crawling off.
