Rather than spread these around, I'll just group them together.
Chomper was making a lot of noise, like he wanted to tear his cage apart, Spoiled rotten lizard wanted to free roam the reptile room, so while he was poking around I took some photos, not just of him, but some of the snakes and rats too.
The ceiling fan seemed to get his interest..

Chomper looks awesome, you should put a ceiling fan in his room when its complete.

He lets us pick him up, he's never been mean and he is about as heavy as a small dog or a large cat.

Does CHOMPER eat rodents?
he will, but I prefer not to. The fat content is high, and they have fur and skeletons.
Savannah Monitors are insectivores, primary wild diet is worms and bugs, crayfish and shrimp during the rainy season.
His all time favourite food is big gooey slugs & snails.

I was searching for a place to buy snails and they average 1.79 each to 2.50 each. I haven't purchased any yet but did buy some shrimp. We will see how that goes.

He likes showers.. almost like rain.
He freaks out over baths, but sits there just fine for a shower, so showers it is..

I've got a friend who breeds these massive snails, and her colony is always overflowing, never asked how hard they were to breed but I'm going to assume they are pretty easy. Might be fun to keep a spare 10g aside for snails and give chomper a few treats :) Shes got a few 1000 snails easy

A lot of animals would rather deal with the rain than a pond. Think about it... Try giving your Beardie a "shower". He might like it.

Hmmmm, I'll try it but I dunno, I think he's hydrophobic. He never drinks from his bowl and he hates baths and he hates getting misted :p
I think he's just scared of the unknown. The previous owners didn't do a very good job raising em

It's not really all that weird, it rains in Africa. we just make sure the water is lukewarm, not cold.

Nero hates getting misted, but I caught him taking a bath a week ago. Haven't tried it with Tubs yet.
Very cool monitor. My friend's savannah is one of my favs in her collection.
And I had no idea there were such pretty garter snakes. Just gorgeous.

Yes that is a coastal, but that wiki has so much wrong with it:shocked:
The correct name for coastals is Thamnophis elegans terrestris not Thamnophis sirtalis parietalis like the wiki states.
Poisonous?? never tried eating one.:p

No, but my actual parietalis will do;) See how easy it was for the author of that wiki to get it wrong, they are nearly the same in appearance.

I do believe that Garters are the only POISONOUS snakes on the planet - i was watching a BBC documentary and it was mentioned on there - i know everyone makes mistakes but i would be surprised if it was wrong from that source. :)
Wow, thanks for sharing that. I had no idea.... I particularly like your screen-namesake.

Is it true that garter snakes only have one tooth?
Not true at all.
They have rows of fine teeth.
I have been bitten enough times:eek:
Since their primary food in the wild consists of tadpoles, frogs, worms and fish, They need theese teeth to hold on to the slippery food they crave so much.

Man I want a sav.
How hard is it to take really good care of one?
And how much does it cost?
I would totally have one but I dunno if I have the responsibility :p
Or the cash for that matter

short answer....
difficult, expensive and no offense, but done right, a 30 year commitment.
You have your whole life ahead of you, when you own a house and can accomidate a cage thats 8 feet wide (absolute minimum) then start considering it.

Sadly my friend, so many people jump right in without knowing what they are facing, and the monitor suffers for it. Most of them are dead by year one.
They are tiny as babies, It guts me when I see them in pet stores for $30
Chomper ingested a pound of shrimp today and that plate of trout, he will want more food tomorrow.
