Question... Out of curiosity I was looking into red tail boas and from photos, your stunning little coral looks like what they call a "coral sunglow" rather than a "coral albino". I'm more of a python person, so my knowledge of big boas is limited. Is there a difference between these two?

There is indeed a difference: A Sunglow boa is actually a hypo albino with both the co-dominant hypo gene and the recessive albino gene present, and visible. An albino, is just that - add the Coral trait to both morphs and there you have it.

He bought his as a red group...whatever that really implies.

Thanks for the compliments. I love my little coral boy, He is full of attitude too. It's great!

KORBIN5895
10-22-11, 07:58 AM
Red group????? Can someone clarify please. All I was looking for was a boa when I started. So I am not up much on all the morphs........... on anything! Lol!

Gungirl
10-22-11, 08:04 AM
The only thing I have been told and I'm not sure of the truth behind this is that red group boa's tend to keep more of their color( and it even darkens sometimes) as they age. Where as others loose or have there color fade. Feel free to correct me if I am wrong.....

KORBIN5895
10-22-11, 08:09 AM
Pftt. Like I have two clues. Sounds good to me. I am having a really hard time identifying what my boas are. The internet is just confusing me.

Gungirl
10-22-11, 08:13 AM
We bought from a really well known guy so I trust the line we where told we had. I just haven't looked into the morphs that much. I don't intend on breeding I just want good looking snakes. Where did you buy your Boa's from? If it was a pet store, good luck on finding out what you really have unless you breed it to see what it makes. If you got it from a good breeder they should be able to tell you what it is.

KORBIN5895
10-22-11, 08:41 AM
Pet store is where he is from. But like I said I bought him as a common. One of the workers said that his buddy bought one too because they were pastel redtails. I just found that little tis bit out last week. I do alot of business with them (buying and selling ) so I know he isn't feeding me a line. Braid a I had the snake 6 months before he told me this. So I am sure it is not a sales pitch.

millertime89
10-22-11, 04:08 PM
there's so many different boas out there, I can't even begin to tell them apart, so don't worry, you're not alone.

KORBIN5895
10-22-11, 05:51 PM
Well i showed my snakes to a breeder about an hour away. I sent them pics and they just happened to be in town and asked to stop by and see it. So my common boa ( paid like forty forging at the pet store) is believed to be a salmon minus the orange markings. Or pastel. The second is a redtail boa. But my het for albino is a motley. Does this make sense to any of you?

millertime89
10-22-11, 06:12 PM
yes
here's a motley het albino

(explicit reptiles)
and a pastel salmon boa
http://www.reptilechannel.com/images/article-images/pastel-boa.jpg
(the reptile channel)
not entirely sure what pastel means (still looking into morphs), I'm not sure if its lighter coloration or reduced markings or what. And motley is a way to describe the pattern, het albino means it has the albino gene, but is not albino. You can breed it with another het albino and get both albinos and normals and het albinos, or with an albino and get albinos and het albinos. Although I'm not sure if het albino boas have a show that you can see (a way to tell its het albino)

lady_bug87

love love the motley

As for a visual het albino in a motley - a good breeder told me there is one. He said that most motleys het albino's "upper half" of their eyes are very white. I cannot vouch for that statement, however, as I have not personally seen this proven out.

True pastels are polygenetic, selective breeding. They are bred for cleanness and colour. Most are light, washed-out, and nearly fleckless, but some bloodlines have the most impressive red and pink coloration you will find, Pastel x Pastel producing the best results. Many "Pastel" boas you see are normals that have been called Pastel at some point by a breeder or shop simply because it's clean, or anyhting other than the standard looking BCI grey colour, when they have no idea of the genetics behind the snakes. They simply equate clean boa to mean "Pastel".

You can often pay good money for a true pastel. The Kubsch line from Germany is a good example: (photo from Freek Nuyt)
http://i1103.photobucket.com/albums/g463/katgirl17/boas_kupsch_1.jpg
Like all the other Pastel lines, it acts like a dominant trait in that when bred to unrelated animals, it will produce some Pastel-like offspring. Some of the most orange & red Pastels have been created by the Kubsh line, and a "bi product" of certain breedings with these boas in Germany is another trait called “Square Tailed Boa”. There are many other Pastel lines (ie. Ronne, East Bay Vivarium, and Washington), others have been bred for more red, more pink (like the pic you attached), more cream colour, etc. Pastel is a very good gene to work with, as it will "clean up" whatever morph you are crossing it with - and the better the pastel, the better chance you will have some outstanding clean resulting morphs ;)

I would like to add: Just take for example the Pastel Salmon picture posted by millertime89 - salmons typically have a fair bit of speckling - do you see that in this morph? Nope :) It would be a nice trait to have influence bloody salmons too, come to think of it....

By the way Kat - awesome pics! I love both of your new additions :) Keep the pics coming once they are settled in ;)

Well I am sure he is a motley after that pic! Awesome pic btw. Ad for the pastel
.... well........... I am not sure what you mean by clean. He has a darker brown saddle and is very pale gray. Almost white after a shed but darkens up right before a shed. He also seems to darken up when agitated. But that is probably just in my head.

Synonyms for clean include: clear, neat, tidy and spotless. Generally a snake with clear, consistent patterning (ie. defined, even saddles) with a background that is relatively "tidy" with consistent colour and little speckling/peppering is considered "clean". That's how I would define it at least.

Oh I agree! Actually, I find that sometimes peppering can actually ADD to the beauty of a boa sometimes. I actually said that about my Hog in this thread: http://www.ssnakess.com/forums/boa-constrictor/88539-my-hog-island-boa-evening-photoshoot.html i think you definitely have a beautiful girl, I'm green with "good natured" envy ;)

10-24-11, 08:52 AM
New guys are doing fine from what I have seen. I have yet to handle them Just checking temps and doing water changes. Beza(my coral) decided to poop in his water dish. I have a feeling he is going to be the difficult one. Other than that just designing their vivs and getting hubby on board to build soon.

lady_bug87
10-24-11, 08:55 AM

Lol well thank you but no worries. I actually enjoy reading about all the stuff that has been discussed in the thread. I know the husbandry needs but I never looked into the morph side of it beyond what I visually liked. I have no want/need to breed. I am however glad to have all that knowledge at my finger tips.

I think far to many people are breeding on a whim...

lady_bug87
10-24-11, 09:04 AM
yep! I stopped one such pairing before it was too late and then felt proud so I started a thread about it

Gungirl
11-04-11, 02:24 PM
Update.. Beza and Loki ate their first meals for us (Both took 2 fuzzies) I am getting in more feeders and larger ones so next time I am going to up their food size. I was told both where feeding on pinks but they can easily take larger. The 2 fuzzies left good but not great food lumps. Once I get them to eat again I will take more pictures.

Gungirl
12-05-11, 12:26 PM
Well I made a choice...I sold Beza my coral albino. :( I have other things I wanted the money/room for. He went to a friend on mine and she will take great care of him. I was sad to see him go but I know I made the right choice.

lady_bug87
12-05-11, 12:38 PM
aw that sucks... but there will be other snakes and I'm sure you made the best choice
