Any one have any ideas how I can get my humidity in this Viv to go and stay around 50%? I spry 3-4 times a day, but within a hour its back to about 25%. I also have a live Snake Plant in the Viv
If i put a fogger in warm side of viv will that help me?

Hard to tell from pics but is it open right up to the top section where the lights are or is there a false "ceiling" inthere?

If it is open then most of the humidity is gonne be lost cos of the height of the tank, tho saying that my GTP viv is 3ft tall and we only spray twice a day to get it up to 80%.

We use reptibark as a substrate which does absorb moisture and then slowly release it which keeps the humidity up for a longer period........

This viv is 3'high x4'wide x 18"deep, there is just a screen between the lights and the living quarters of the viv. I normally have bark mulch in the base, but due to a wound at the moment, I have only newspaper to avoid bedding from getting in the wound. (never feed live to ur snake!!!)

The screen is letting all your humidity up out of the main area - BIIIIG bowl of water under the light may help

what I did was put some aluminum foil on the screen and cut out holes for the lights to shine through.

sure mine are set on medium on timers that go on every hour for 5 minutes, it maintains a constant 50 - 60 humidity, when in shed i bump them on high. Don't use tap water.

I can't re call why, but use distilled.

Here are some pictures of how I keep humidity in my custom enclosures (Wood)
..Excuse the Double Barrel 12g in the bottom corner lol

regular tap water has additives for humans, I just fill gallon jugs at the grocery store, they should have jugs there for you.

Your issues:
1. Your tank is 3 times taller than it should be.
2. You use a mesh top. Ditch it.
3. Get rid of the heat lamps. UTH's do work on wood.
4. Use a substrate that holds better humidity.

As for UTH working on wood you will have to give me proof on that, I have contacted Zoo Med and they said they do not condone using them on wood as it can be a fire hazard, and will burn out the UTH as they are meant for glass!!!!
I prefer a Viv that looks like furniture not a rubber maid container, and as for to much room my Ball loves it as he is super active at night!

use a sheet of lexan or plexiglass on the bottom of the viv with the UTH under it and the substrate over it. If you're really worried about fire than get to pieces of lexan and sandwich the uth between them.
I do agree that the viv is too tall, but on the other hand it looks awesome.

What are the dimensions?

You could try to use a ceramic heat emitter. In my experience it doesn't dry out the humidity nearly as much.

What are the dimensions?

4'w x 3't x 18" d lights take up 1' at top so living quarters is only 2' high

"As for UTH working on wood you will have to give me proof on that"
I don't have to provide you proof on anything. You asked for advice, I gave it.
It seems you are more concerned with a pretty habitat for yourself than you are with providing proper husbandry for your ball python, so with that, you're on your own Sir.
Good luck.

Your just giving advice about a product that you haven't research!!! THANKS
And the original question was if I use a reptile fogger will it help the humidity? Other people gave better answers then you! The answer is yes it will help, as I bought one yesterday and now my tank is at a perfect 60%. So now my Ball has perfect Husbanbry :D

Cheers Mate

"So now my Ball has perfect Husbanbry "

It's husbandry with a D, not a B.
And I doubt that.

In my 13 years in this hobby and 10 years of breeding, I've tried it all and what I can tell you is that if you don't put your animals needs before your aesthetic desire to show him off in a pretty enclosure, you will continue to have issues.
Good luck, you'll need it.
Oops, I mean Goob luck.

Sorry I shouldn't say perfect HUSBANDRY, (Good HUSBANDRY)

mykee there are more then one way to do things, I was just try to have the both of best worlds. I'm not trying to fight with you! I want the best for my pet snake as any reptile lover would want (I would hope).

I would go with either a RHP or a UTH or flexwatt.. They all work on wood and are FAR better than heat lamps.....

What is a RHP or a flexwatt?

What is a RHP or a flexwatt?

RPH is a radiant heat panel that you hook to the ceiling. It heats up the items on the floor of the viv and they then radiate heat through out the enclosure.
Radiant Heat Panel FAQ: Reptile Basics Inc (http://www.reptilebasics.com/radiant-panel-faq)

Flexwatt is like a heat pad you make yourself.
Flexwatt Heat Tape (http://www.reptilebasics.com/flexwatt-heat-tape)

This is the first site that came up when I googled but it will give you a better Idea

Thanks, i will look into this :) do you know if i will be able to put a UTH under a 1" thick piece of stone? Have you used a UTH in wood VIV? if so how did you have it installed?

Gungirl
10-16-11, 05:14 PM
I have flexwatt in mine. I am sure you could use a UTH in the same kind of way though.

4. Use a substrate that holds better humidity.

He already said he can't use any loose substrate since his snake has a wound.

Thanks! (my hubby TMacie did most of the "building") I think it would work under a rock ok depending on the type of rock....You will have to try it out. You might be better off using aspen or cypress or both ...

Thanks jay0133
worked just like you said it would :D I set mine to go off every 2 hours for 15 minutes. humidity stays at a consistent 63%, and like you said at shed time i'll be able to bump it up with no worries.

Thanks Man

I got mine at petland for around $100 with gst. you can get it on ebay for $75 shipped to your door. It's a zoo med repti fogger, like the pic jay0133 posted in page 1 of this thread.

Thanks, I like the idea of not having to worry about misting when I'm at work all day and my bp is shedding. My bp doesn't use his humid hide, he prefers the cool side lately.
