My son finally got his 1st snakes this week, 3 baby corns. He is 7 and I made him spend some time reading and learning about them and the husbandry before I'd let him have any snakes. After 3 months of reading books and studying, I tested him (yeah, I read it too.. I'll need to know it to help him). No major tough questions, just general stuff about temperature, humidity, feeding, stuff like that. The kid is really sharp and knows his stuff. We have them in the tank now and are leaving them be for a couple of days to give them time to adjust. Then I'll post some pics.

You have them in separate tanks right?

No. The breeder i got them from said they'd be fine together. It's a 55 gal tank so plenty of space for everyone to have they're own area.

The breeder misled you.

There are very few "social" snakes, and corns are not one of them.

Great... ok... so I need to see about separating them. They're still babies. Do I have some time on this or do I need to do it ASAP? They're about a foot long.

Another thought. It's a 55 gal tank. Can I section it off to keep them apart?

Yes for now.. a plywood divider wall will be perfect.

as adults, a full 55 is just right.

I keep mine in a 55 (4 feet) he was in a 20 (2 feet) and it was cramped.

It did take almost 3 years for the snake to reach 4 feet long.

Separate as soon as possible, i also made this mistake and at 3months old one attacked the other - thankfully i was watching at the time and separated them before anything could happen. As an adult they need a 3ft minimum enclosure but as babies they can manage much smaller areas. How will you get a gradient of temps in each section if you use a separater?? Just a thought.......

If you research cohabitation you will see a ton of examples of snakes eating each other. It's not something you want to have to deal with. Also if one snake has a regurgitation you won't know which one it was or why it happened. If one gets sick they will all be at high risk to get sick. So many reasons to not allow them to live in the same tank.

for now you could go get 2 tubs and a controlled heat source. One in the tank, 2 in the tubs and then you have all the time in the world to find and set up the perfect show tank for each one!!

I agree! Tubs are one of the best quick 'n cheap housing options for snakes, especially smaller ones (snakes, that is). Wal-Mart has locking ones for 3-10 bucks, depending on size, and they work GREAT for terrestrial snakes of all sorts.

Congrats on the new acquisitions, though!! Can't wait for pics!!

Faunariums work well for young corns too, probably cost a little more tho.

Ok.. looks like I'm heading to Target in a few until I can work out something better. Thanks for the input everyone!

I know what you are saying, small UTH pads only use about 8-10 inches.

But I like the tote ideas too.

IMO You would either have to use 3 small UTH's or put a small strip of flex watt from one side right across the back to the other side. So in all sections the back would be the hot and the front would be the cool side....

It is SO refreshing to see someone take sound advice, instead of arguing back.

You are definitely a welcome addition to the forum.

Thanks everyone! I'll be the first to admit I'm new to this and still trying to learn. I'm always glad to get sound advice, especially when it is echoed by others (tends to make it more credible). I'm sure in the future I'll be asking more and more questions. Trying to do my best to be a responsible owner and help my son learn. Thanks again everyone!

Never hesitate to ask anything at all.

Glad to be helpful.

This is such a great hobby with wonderful animals. You and your son will soon be educating others I am sure.

Another suggestion, if the snakes are small enough, I find using a wider, flatter deli cup works great for a temporary setup.

Just checked the tank. 75 deg on the cool side, 80 on the warm. 57% humidity. Looking pretty good.

see if you can bump the hot side up a bit to like 85-87
