Hmm...this would fit better in a general Tree Boa section, but I guess this will have to do :)

Gracie - female Solomon Island Tree Boa. This chick has many different outfits and sports whichever suits her mood of the hour. She can be anywhere from black to taupe, and the amount of pattern you see depends on the colour at the time. Enjoy!

Amazons Tree Boas and Solomon Island Tree boas are *very* different in the attitude department. While some ATBs are easy to work with, most remain a little testy and SITBs simply don't have an aggressive bone in their body, but they're incredibly hard to find as there are very few in captivity. Best of luck for whichever you decide upon :)

do SITBs sit in that traditional ETB/ATB/GTP folded over the log position?

Well, the Tree Boa designation is a bit of a misnomer, but it helps distinguish them from their terrestrial counterparts. They're just as happy on the ground as they are in the branches. While they do drape themselves over branches at times, they will also curl-up on the ground in the open. They're very casual snakes, comparable to a Carpet Python's attitude more than ETB/ATB or GTP.

splendid, I'm looking for a more arboreal snake, and I'm just trying to narrow it down.

Absolutely gorgeous boa! The colour change is AMAZING! Comparing her to an RTB, (only speaking in terms of the comparison that pops into MY mind, not that it's a particularly close one :p) it makes me think of her changing from Hog Island boa to an Azabache! Huge colour change! Congrats on owning such an incredible boid :)

To everyone that wants one of these, I wish them the best of luck tracking one down. If you *do* ever find one, jump on it because you'll probably never see another one. There are so few in captivity. It seems they were only exported the one time a few years ago and there won't be any more coming.

If you happen to find one and it's a baby (which are much smaller than your average hatchling Corn Snake), be warned that you're likely to need a colony of House Geckos to get it going. If you can't find House Geckos, they have been known to accept other small Gecko tails as food, but it's a long road to get them onto mice, and even as an adult the largest thing it can take as food are mice, so these are things to consider before you make the grab ;)

On a side note, Gracie is a very large female and males will be considerably smaller than she is. She's also a very mature snake, shedding only once every 9-10 months, so it'd be many years before a young one got to her size.

These are also not an easy thing to get to breed, requiring multiple males to trigger the breeding instinct. Breeding in this species only occurs every 2-3 years and they're notorious for high failure rates in captive breeding; they're very fussy and it's quite difficult to reproduce the conditions required for the female to bear live young. Females very often hold the young past term and and pump out still-borns because the conditions they want weren't met. As great a snake as they are, they're a tricky customer to reproduce for the masses.

Here's a fresh paint job on Gracie. She'd just finished shedding, so she's just sitting in a containment tank and resting while I cleaned her ExoTerra.

Gotta love when she's wearing her black leisure suit - her iridescence shows-up so nicely in that colour phase and she looks so shiny. When she's in a light colour mode the iridescence looks much more like a satin finish than it does in this mode :)

Lots of snakes can change colour. The entire Candoia family are capable of radical changes in colour, as are most Boa Constrictors. Reticulated Pythons also have the ability to radically change at times. Some have a limited ability, where only their heads change colour such as in Blood Pythons, but there are many that can change their entire appearance like Gracie can :)

Blood, I just stumbled across the candoia tasmai tasmai today myself. Really bummed to hear they are tough to cross over to rodents and to breed.

The ground boa counterparts aren't nearly as difficult to get eating or to breed. They're a hearty, angry snake which can take much larger food than the tree boas, which makes them easy to keep. They are not, however, pleasant animals to work with and that's why you don't see them in any numbers in private collections.

I looked after a Candoia carinata while a buddy went over seas for a year and it was not something I'd do again. Angry, unpredictable and problematic, it was probably the worst herp experience I've had. Those things just aren't happy being captive, but the are easy to care for. The problem in breeding the ground boas is finding homes for them - people tend to steer clear of them.

Really? What do you know about the Madagascan Ground Boa? I have researched them quite a lot, and although still rare in the hobby, they are said to be very gentle giants. Do you know of that being accurate?

That's a totally different ball game - night and day :)

It's *Candoia* ground boas that are...unhappy snakes, lol.

I should add that although I base my opinion on these things upon my own experience, I do know a local who really got heavily into these, but the fascination left quickly and she decided very suddenly that they 'weren't the snake for her'. The novelty of such a challenge wore-off quite quickly.

Now, don't get me wrong, I think these little guys are really cool, but I know enough about them that I wouldn't take one-in unless I was it's last resort. There's just something about knowing my charges are unhappy that I can't stand, so I'd quite likely only take it until I could find someone else who was specifically looking for the challenge.

Yeah, she's got a shovel head and she knows how to use it for digging, that's for sure, lol.

She's already maxed-out for size. She's a pinch over 4 feet and that's big for what she is, but then again she is a mature snake and only sheds once a year - about every 8-9 months. Growth is negligible at her age and you can't notice it at all. I don't think she's even added a full inch in the past 3 years, but she does eat like there's no tomorrow, lol.

She's really super-cool Todd. Like Alessia said, the head shape is just really sleek, Verizon unique. May be a silly question, but does her color change at all? Either with age or time of day/night?
