Location would be helpful.

The uniformity of the blotches suggest it's a common water snake.

They are harmless.

I can't identify it but it doesn't look venomous. There's a lot of snakes with that pattern.

Yeah I still think that's what it is.

And or your information, they are not only harmless, but are great to have, cause they're awesome. Kidding. Cause they eat mice and stuff, never bother anyone. We had a mouse problem a year ago, then two rat snakes showed up. When I convinced my mom they were good to have (she hated them being under the house) and my dad not to kill them... Mice went away. We still have the obviously, cause those are some fat snakes. BIG fat snakes. 7 footer one of them.

My mom now says "if those rat snakes ever move out from this house, you're catching more". Never thought I'd hear her say that...

No snakes are poisonous…

Oh yes they are!!! Garters are the only POISONOUS snake in the world!!

For those that need clarity, venomous means they can kill by injecting venom during biting, poisonous means they cause digestive distress/death when you eat the thing in question.

I always remember that one by:

If IT bites YOU and makes you sick it's VENOMOUS, if YOU bite IT and it makes you sick, it's POISONOUS!

Man...I *wish* I could run into snakes on a daily basis... my college has a "nature trail" and in the 3+ years I've been here, I rarely see any.

yup, here too. The only snake you see here *sometimes* (they keep well hidden with the abundant predator population we have) is the common westcoast garter.

I know venom from poison by thinking venom is injected, poison in ingested. You can drink venom and be totally fine as long as you have no open cuts in your mouth or throat. Not a chance I'd take but whatever :P
