Alright, fine, I'll make one too! I have 5 snakes, but I'm making one for Red because he's the one who will be changing.

He's a "flame" eastern garter snake. He was born in May (I think), and gets redder with every shed!

He is a sweet, calm snake, smaller then the rest for some reason. (9-10 inches) He is very "tame" but will bite me if he feels like it. Just a little casual nip, though, to get the message across.

He gets extremely exited during feeding time, to the point where I have to seperate him from the others sometimes! If he sees his water dish moves, he thinks guppies are there and swims around in circles. Problem is when he's in that mode he attacks movement which includes other snakes.

So he has a unique attitude.

Here he is earlier when I got him.

Here he is after his most recent shed!

That second one may be a little exaggerated by lighting, but that's the most color-accurate photos I have.

I'll update this thread with photos each time he sheds.:)

I love garter snakes.

My Father is the one who spotted it, he sent me the picture. Southern Ontario is where it was spotted.

Where do you buy one? Lots of garter snake breeders out tree selling them. I got mine from Scott Felzer. I think Jason of GarterSnakeWorld.com (or something lol) has some as well as a loooot of others. I'll PM you with more info

Jesse, one thing to remember, crossing borders with live animals is a nightmare.

The Canadian members are rather limited to what is available in Canada.

For Flames, talk to Charles, he's Canadian.

Well I meant to ask how you produce the flame? What is needed to create the reds?

I think it's recessive to normal no? I don't know much about thamnophis genetics.

Pretty sure it's recessive, and you can breed it to a normal and get flames but I don't breed so I can't say for sure...

Flame is not a morph at all really, it's just a naturally occurring colour found primarily in the garter snake populations around Quebec.

The genetics are such that breeding a flame to a "normal" will produce many babies that are various degrees of red.

Red pigment is prevalent in nearly all garter snakes, Red sided, red spotted, red radix, red easterns, red stripe westerns, red stripe pugets and red stripe ribbon snakes can all be found in the wild if you look in the right place.
