View Full Version : Why you don't leave the snake cage open.

Wasn't feeding time or anything, just middle of the day. I opened the cage for whatever reason I had and just watched my 3 garter snake babies move around. I never worry too much about leaving the lid off cause there's no way for them to get out. They aren't long enough, nothing reaches the top, and and they can't climb the glass. No reason to worry.
Uh huh.

lol That's why I use the lock on mine. With my luck Diesel (Fat Cat) would try to love on Sasha (BP), Fritz (Mean cat) would try to eat her, and Evie (Sweet cat) would stand back watching the show waiting on popcorn....
I don't know who would win between Fritz and Sasha and I am scared to find out!

LOL Would end badly for both. Fritz is a hunter, he doesn't like Sasha..he has eaten many snakes in the wild and his eyes get as big as dinner plates when I take Sasha out of the viv. (Thank God Rabbit season is over...for weeks I had to wash rabbit body fluids off my front porch and bury remaining parts left uneaten. EW)
I can picture it well, Sasha completely wrapped around Fritz with ALL of Fritz claws and teeth embedded into Sasha. And both being dead...I would cry forever.

That particular snake loves 'em more. He's an anery red sided, and would rather eat fish then anything else. LOVES THEM. The fish were doomed.

I have seen a few snakes that have mastered getting wet and going right up the glass.

Awesome. This guy has recently mastered sticking to the glue in the corners! I never leave it open, even if I made it sound like I do.
Something I observed from these crazy smart garters, is when he climbed up the glue, my concinnus sat and watched him. Eyes on him the whole time. When he (anery) fell, the concinnus move in and tried it!! Seriously. True story. He was smart enough to see what he was doing an try it himself.
I love garter snakes.

My snake has recently been more interested with the tank lid being off rather than her food. Just yesterday I had the lid open to watch her eat (top lid not front lid) and possibly do the "zombie" dance. Of course she notices the lid aside and moves out right past her food. Now I dunno what I am gonna do if I need to do the zombie dance and all she can think about is getting out...ugh. Eat first darling then think about getting out.

Dude, you get out, what happens to your daily gorging of tilapia?:p your pre-cut worms?
Besides. This guys and my concinnus are so curious and try so hard to get out I take them often. They love it. I just let 'em cruise around on the floor etc. I feed them like that sometimes too, just cause he likes it.

Yeah sometimes for feeding I'll set up a little simulation so that he has to use his actual hunting skills to find the mouse :) It's pretty fun to watch em go at it and I figure it wouldn't hurt to let him learn if he ever escapes.

not over here yet, they're getting huge. My cat is having a field day and eating well.
Those climbers are hilarious.

I made my dog spit out 2 baby rabbits last week.
And a chicken.
And a decaying bird...

Well, he stopped catching them. I think he prefers the smaller ones that weigh less than 5 pounds, nice and tender. Fritz only weighs 12 pounds.

LOL I stopped making Fritz spit them out if they were dead. If he brings home live prey, I rescue it, rehab it if necessary, then release it. If it's dead I let him have it.
So far this year Fritz has brought home a handful of rabbits (2 half eaten and one just dead), 1 itty bitty furry mole (died in my hands..very sad,it was cute and about the size of a .50 cent piece), one dead mole, 1 Oreole (left in my driveway behind my back tire), 1 unidentified bird (1 foot and 1 feather was all that remained on my "Wipe your Paws" porch mat..that actually made me laugh when I saw it because the day before I scolded him about not eating what he caught (the dead rabbit)) and that's all I can remember right now.

They were all dead by the time he brings 'em back... He's a bird dog and only wants to bring the to me.:) so he drops 'em anyway and looks at me and wags his tail and I just tell him good boy.:D
I didn't mean MADE him spit it out. He does anyway.
