09-22-11, 01:14 PM
Well its one week before brumation and 3 weeks until she drops a second potential clutch my pair of Jewelled Lacertas is once again mating,
The first clutch was not viable and she is starting to look 'full' and they mated today so I I dont know if I should go ahead and brumate them anyways but I should see some eggs at some point!
wish me luck

yet another update!!
SHE IS HUGE lol
seriously I think her abdomen is 3x what it normally is and shes spending a lot of time in her hides or in her lay box no eggs yet The incubator is plugged in and the temp is stabilized so we're ready when mama is ready.
She has an incredible appetite and eats her calcium dusted crickets daily, by her size I'm hoping for another 10 eggs hopefully in the second week of October like we estimated based on when she dropped her last clutch which were sadly slugs, with one viable yet damaged egg which did not make it.

thanks! me too I hope they hatch this time its so exciting, I may still brumate them for next season to see if it helps build some sperm count so I guess I will wait until she lays these eggs and then start the cooling off process

She Layed!
I now have a clutch of 13 bright white kinda squishy eggs lol I called the ONLY other Canadian breeder and he said I wont know if they are viable for another couple weeks and my female is still digging
Mamma is doing great she is energetic and still looks full so I'm not sure if she will drop more or not she laid these late last night

aw you're so sweet

OK
not sure who is actually waiting for these updates but I am going to keep giving them until someone tells me to stop...
Ok so week one of incubation went awesome all my eggs are puffy and white aside from a very very mild mold problem that has been fixed all 12 look great so. One week down... roughly 11 more to go! I candled them and there are some dark little shadows in a few but its still too early to tell the eggs have also swelled since they have been in the incubator
this is also week 1 of brumation of my pair which will last approx 7 more weeks I should see a newly gravid mama around February with eggs starting in March and hatchlings for June.
This season without brumation my young female managed to lay 25 eggs with her first clutch of 13 being mostly unfertilized but she carried them and had no problems laying maintained a steady appetite and energy level throughout her gravid period after laying she maintained some weight and continued to feed on schedule without fail so I'm proud of her =D
I cant wait for next season!!

what's the process of shipping animals from Canada to here? I might want a few if its not too expensive (if you know)

It's gruesome. For the best but it's just plain hard unless you're a billionaire. That's why you get all those stories about people trying to smuggle snakes onto airplanes :P

If you are interested in the species there are American Breeders I'm not sure where they are located but I have seen them on a few sites
and thank you! This is my first time trying to breed anything and there is precious little info out about them so I am trying to document the experience incase someone out there is trying to find someone else doing it
and like I said the updates will keep coming until someone tells me to stop regardless of the number of replies I get lol

you should just have stephen bring a few with him when he comes down, or would all that crap still have to be gone through?

If it was that easy... ahh I would have my ackies by now...lol
You still have to do a lot of the same stuff. They don't let you carry animals across the boarder with out all the permits and paper work.

Goodmorning folks,
My eggs are officially 2 weeks old and this week was not as kind as last week, the mould is back and it is worse than before, next year I plan on using dry vermiculite I have had 3 eggs collapse and 2 completely covered in sticky mould
I will try and fix what I can but its not looking good on that front I still have a few promising eggies though so we will see what hatches for me 2.5 months to go until our hatch date
This is also week 2 of brummation the lacertas are doing fine I have 6 mos to go I will keep this updated throughout the day on the mould situation I will be taking unorthodox extreme measures shortly I have no clue if it will work but it is worth a try.
Thanks for reading!

What are you incubating them in now?
Usually when eggs mold like that, they were never fertile in the first place. Have you candled them??

I did when she laid them but they were too small and too soft to really see anything, this season wasn't supposed to happen I just got her in March and was going to wait until next season to start breeding them but since they're housed together all year and they bred and laid eggs I figured I would give them a shot.
A couple of them look like they have something inside and those are the ones that had no mould on them or very little
right now they are in dry vermiculite in my zoomed reptibator at a temp of 84 degrees with 84% ambient humidity

Yeah, you won't see anything right after they are laid....but not long after you should. You should without a doubt see veins in healthy eggs and they will have a pink/red glow. Infertile eggs will be yellow.
lady_bug87
10-27-11, 09:58 AM
I honestly try not to touch them too much there is one that is collapsed but it looks like there is something inside so I dont know if it doesnt hatch I will probably dissect it
totheend
10-27-11, 10:04 AM
You really don't need to touch them. You can candle them without picking them up. The one that is collapsed and looks like something is inside is probably dried up yolk.
I do wish you the best in JL babies though, and look forward to you posting baby pictures someday!!

thanks I'm not expecting too much this year I'm using these eggs as my learning curve I expect a much better turn out next year after having this year under my belt I was talking to the only other breeder I know of these lizards and he was telling me he didnt brumate either for this season and his turn out wasnt good either
These lizards are delicate in terms of their breeding cycle which is funny considering how hardy they are as lizards

Hello folks this unfortunately will be my last update for the season. The latest clutch that she dropped were all slugs again which is to be expected since no brumation took place
My pair has been brummatimg for three weeks my male looks good my female looks like she is loosing a bit of weight so I will be monitoring her but since she laid eggs in the fall instead of spring I may end brumation at 4 weeks instead of the 8 weeks that is listed on what information I do have
So this year not so good in the way of hatchlings but considering she is a young female and dropped 25 eggs for me without needing assistance makes me happy besides if I get hatchlings it's a bonus I just love these little guys
So thanks every one I will update again once I have some mating news

yea shes doing alright, I am anxious to finish their brumation so I can get her gaining some weight she lost more then I would have liked but she seems to have stabilized

well its been exactly 15 days since my last post. I stopped brumation on November 5th. My female is back to being nice and plump and today I witnessed them lock up.
Its a little worrying because she laid eggs not too long ago... I feel like I did something wrong brumating them when I did... but she is active and eating like a champ she probably ate 30 crickets (large) today
well on the plus side I will have at least 4 weeks before I see any eggs IF I see any eggs...

^^ indeed
There is very little information and what IS out there is flawed I managed to find the only other breeder of these guys in Ontario and found out that they sold their 1.3 colony. They gave me some really good tips especially in terms of lighting and nutrition (I wasn't using enough UVB) when I started with my male there were no real care-sheets and when he was being kept they didnt use any UVB and so neither did I
He thrived doubled in size in the first 6mos, shed, ate, was active as heck, pooped like a machine so no problems right? Well when I introduced my female I didn't change my husbandry and again she thrived, she too grew a nice thick tail base and filled in nicely ate and pooped like a machine and they mated again I didnt change anything and that was my mistake.
Though I doubt her eggs were viable I didn't provide the UVB she needed (stupid me I know) again I read caresheets and NOTHING no info after going to that breeder who is a friend of my normal supplier so I could trust the info they were giving me
They gave me some great tips and some pretty intense bulbs to use and mama is doing great she even likes her new pregnancy diet which is gecko superfood with a little added calcium powder and lots of dusted crickets, and horned worms they recommended I cut up hoppers for her to eat because of the bones but we'll see they have been locking up multiple times a day
and in a couple weeks I will put her lay box back into the tank and then wait I guess

lady_bug87
11-26-11, 04:53 PM
yea they are. Super active they really are a joy to watch and have. I am expecting her to be gravid very shortly if not already.
They have locked up at least half a dozen times and now they ignore each other mostly momma is doing well she has a good appetite but she's been spending more time resting in the evenings before lights out

I keep my pair in a 4'x18"x2" but I have kept them in a 3ft long 50gal they have just recently been upgraded lol
they are partially arboreal they love to climb and jump off stuff but they are also great diggers so they need lots of sand and dirt to dig in I have maybe 2 inches of sand
lady_bug87
12-09-11, 10:13 AM
Ok so its been 3 weeks since they started locking and my female is definitely gravid I can actually see egg bulges which I didnt see before in her previous pregnancies shes eating well and is starting to dig around in her lay box though I think I have a couple more weeks to go until she lays
