View Full Version : While at the CRBE...(New Savannah Monitor)

Sooo, while at the CRBE this weekend, I happened to fall across the path of a Savannah Monitor, and absolutely just couldn't resist taking him home with me.
He's pretty tiny, but I have great hopes for this young one. We got him set up in his cage last night and within a few minutes he was out from under his hide just soaking in the heat of the lamp from the top of it. A while later he took notice of all the yummy food running around and began to chomp down.
All in all I believe he was indeed the best choice of the batch to choose, I especially loved his pattern and colouring just a little more than the rest, sure there may not be that much of a difference between them all, but I still like him.

I've thought of a name to call him, Ash for short.. Acheron if he is truly a boy and Ashlyn if he actually turns out to be a girl :P

Pictures to come in a few days after he settles in a bit more..

Welcome to the new way of life.. do it right and you have a friend that will be around for many years. :)

You will find out the sex around puberty, when mature the males will extend their weiner and show it off from time to time.

Ahhh I'm trying, I'm trying.. I just don't want to disturb him, and every time I pause by his cage, he quickly dashes into his hide :(
Though when I just walk past it, he lies still, and waits for me to leave.. haha .. I can't wait till I'm able to start working with him.. It's been 3 days, he's eaten everyday so far so I take that as an awesome sign, means I'm not doing too poorly by him.

But, but, but I want him to get bigger faster so I can take him out... Right now he is too frightened of me, so I mostly never see him.

He'll come around, ive only had my sav for a few months and hes grown a few inches already. Its a trust sort of thing and once hes used to you he'll be more curious than he will afraid of you. Try not to handle him much when hes little, you don't wanna stress him out. Good luck with your little one :)

Your goal should not be to take him out.

Kayla90
09-25-11, 02:12 PM
Well what should my goal be?

Besides, taking him out is not my goal, it's just an added bonus I'd like to experience. Right now my goal it making sure he lives so it can even get to the point.

Kayla and I are heading down to the MTL expo on the 23rd... There are a few animals that will be sold there that I would spend the money on if I let my guard down but I need to make sure I don't buy em lol.
I've been told that there will be green vine snakes and other assorted rear fanged snakes and an indigo pair.

Gona be going there to buy some PVC cages, and potentially a purple albino retic.

So yesterday for the first time ever I got to see Ash eat :D
It was so fascinating, we threw in a bunch of food for him, and sat very sit, the moment he was comfortable enough and spotted the food it was like, "CRUNCH!" ... "Crunch crunch *swallow*"
bahaha it was the cutest disgusting thing I've ever seen :P

So I just purchased a Ceramic Heat Emitter for Ash today... Noo more bright lights..
Thankfully Steph was nice enough to put it in for me... but it was hilarious when I walked back into the room to see him climbed into Ashes enclosure.. "I couldn't reach it!" Bahaha Oh Steph you never think of doing things the easy but longer way... you have to do everything so complicated.. If only I had grabbed the camera... That would have been one priceless picture.

When I get all done, most people would need a stepladder to change lights in Chompers cage.

I hear that about the cupboards every day... and I tend to set things on the top shelf.

As a Short Woman myself (5'3")..I learned to get revenge on my husband who is a foot taller than I am...I leave all the cabinet doors open.

You see, I can walk right under all of them and never even brush the top of my head with them. He on the other hand whacks the crap out of himself every time I leave them open.

Now it has become a game between us. Every time I leave them open (usually while I am cooking, bouNcing from one cabinet to the next) he runs in the kitchen and Yells, "HUNNY WE'VE BEEN ROBBED!!" and proceeds to close all the cabinets I just opened.

When we moved into this house in 2010, I got here before he did and made sure that I opened every single cabinet door and drawer in the entire house! And guess what...he didn't even notice....LOL

I used to drag the top of my head on the school bus...

Likewise, the last step getting off the buss was the worst, its only 6'2 in Canada, and its got a padded thing on it that lowers it down to 6' sucks really bad for tall people. Got a screw head between the eyes when I jumped off the buss in highschool.

stephanbakir
11-10-11, 08:19 PM
I played for a bit, but never liked it. Everyone looked at my funny, but I'm not ashamed to say that I kick hiney at volleyball, badminton, ping pong, chess, running and any form of swimming. The only physical sports I play are football (american) and rugby.

infernalis
11-10-11, 09:05 PM
My sports have always involved a motor of some sort.

Slalom water skiing is unreal, and it only hurts a little when you wipe out, as long as you don't collide with anything. (I saw a guy ski right into a dock before)

Motocross and woods racing, Trust me, threading through trees on a dirt bike at competitive speeds is an adrenalin rush, more so than heading into a 60 foot long, 6 foot high pile of dirt with the throttle pinned.

Soccer (AKA REAL football) is a blast, but I have only done that recreational and for fun.

stephanbakir
11-10-11, 09:36 PM
Only things with a motor that I've used were a fourwheeler (crappy one) and an airboat. Never had the opportunity. That being said, I did ride on catamaran last march when Cuba was hit by the tail end of a hurricane. I'll dig up some photos and upload them later. We traveled about 20k in under 5 minutes and smashes into the beach. I was flung about 20 feet, my arm smashed an aloe plant and got torn up pretty bad, other then that I was fine.

Gungirl
11-28-11, 05:47 PM
I tend to think that you should always have a spare heat source on hand. I use flexwatt and always have enough to make spares for at least a few vivs. I would suggest keeping a spare CHE on hand to save you and your sav from a later issue. I hope all smooths out this time.

Kayla90
11-28-11, 05:51 PM
Oh we have flexwatt .. the only issue is.. it's not the type of enclosure you can work it into.. I usually had light bulbs going at the same time just so I could also keep a watch on him... but the last one blew a couple nights ago... so I was worried cause I could never see him.. I mean her :P ... I could never see her and I like being able to see them move around at night even if it gives them a moment of stress cause at least then I know they are alright. She has such a big enclosure for her sizes that I almost NEVER see her..
