So I was wondering how all of you decide on names for your pets? My cats are named after disney movies Aladdin and Kiara and then Bear which my fiancé named. Then my reptiles are named after characters from the t.v. series trailer park boys Trinity and Bubbles.

Snakewise we started with two corns - kevin and perry from the film, the next was a rescue and came with a name. Then a BP, we decided we had to have a python called monty. GTP is called hogan, the hulk is green and hulk hogan was a fave of mine growing up. Jcp is jim after Jungle Jim and SD is callec Doc cos Doc was a "super dwarf"

My Ball Python is named Siegfried, after Siegfried and Roy, my BRB is named Pedro, for the Boston Red Sox Pitcher who helped them win their first World Series title in 86 years back in 2004, the year i bought my BRB. My Grey Banded King is Elvis, for the obvious reason, he's the KING, lol. I named my Paradox Albino Sand Boa Cleo, short for Cleopatra, for no reason really.
My 4 Dodoma Flame Kenyans are Bella( after the Twilight character), Rocky, Ares, and Titan( he was the runt of my Paradox's first litter, so i thought he needed a very big sounding name!)

My ball is named after the metal band Meshuggah; I always thought it would be an awesome name for a python. I was told on another forum that it actually means "batty" or "crazy" in Yiddish, so that's a plus- It fits him well. My boyfriend and I went through baby name sites to come up with Roxy for our milk. I don't really remember where I got Lola for my leopard gecko, it was awhile ago. And we've been calling our new Cali king Oblina after the Ahh! Real Monsters character, still haven't decided on an official name so it's probably going to stick.

when I was little, my brother and I had a book we loved. It was called Dexter the PopCorn Dragon. Well one day while my mom and aunt were on a walk this little black cat follows them out of the corn field and wouldn't leave. We took him in and named him Dexter
Casper is a similar story. He walked into our house one night and never really left. Like all cats he's always there when you least expect it. But he seems to be a master of coming out from seemingly nowhere. He's all white and I wanted him to have a ghost name, and being he's a rather friendly cat, Casper seemed fitting.
Sequel (who passed away two years back and who I miss dearly) was the third dog of that breed my parents had owned. Hence, he was a sequel. He was 16 and my brother and I quite literally grew up with him.
Nero, my BRB, was a challenge. I thought at first of calling him Severus, but was informed that one of my friends had named her snake that and I didn't want to copy her. It was suggested on here that I try and come up with something car-related since I'm a car guy as well. I tossed around a few ideas, and one car that has always struck me as exotic was the Lamborghini Gallardo Nera. Nera is the feminine way to say "black" in Italian and Nero is the masculine way (similar to spanish). The Italian Emperor Nero has always intrigued me and since Nero is a nocturnal snake with some very dark markings it seemed fitting.

Malachite the water dragon was named after a famous Forgotten Realms dragon. (screaming geek, I know haha.) Esme was named after Granny Weatherwax from Discworld fame. Lunchbox , the cat, was named after my old roommate's ex-girlfriend. We recently adopted a cat that someone left in a Home Depot bathroom. Her name is Angel, since she is vicious...

1yr old Lacerta female: Isis also grouchy, nippy, and I have also taken to calling her mama because we liked the name lol

Snakes are named after Buffy the Vampire Slayer characters: Angel (Angelus on a moody day) Xander, Oz, Spike, Drusilla.
The only that doesn't fit with this is Frank, because he was named by our 5 year old niece who thinks Frank is her snake that has to live at our house because "mommy would die if he had to live in my room" lol.

Cats are randomly named:
Spike/Spaz, Tiny, Jack, Kitkat, Jazzy

Pika got his name because my boyfriend and I were joking around that because he's yellow (and white; albino bp), that he's yellow like the pokemon "Pikachu" and it kind of stuck to the abbreviated "Pika" lol

LOL Toby ^ Thats hilarious wayne. But don't you think you are destroying his culture? He should have been proudly called Kuntakinte!!!!!!! haha

Most of Europe destroyed that culture ions ago.

Did you know that there is more African culture (tribes) in the Brazilian rain forest than Africa at this time?

The Portuguese brought in MANY times more slaves than the British did here.

Partly because the trip from Africa to Brazil was so much shorter, many more survivors arrived there. (History has recorded ships so rancid with dead bodies arriving on our shores that they were set on fire in the harbor because no one would clean them out)

Also the Portuguese sent only MEN on the ships to Brazil, so all the pretty female slaves were immediately "placed" in the mens houses as objects of pleasure.

Anyways, since the climate in Brazil is so close to the climate in Africa, all the slaves that ran into the jungles went on to form new tribes.

Africa went on to become industrialized, and the culture faded away into obscurity.

I only named a few, after the collection grew rapidly it seemed silly to name them all. I did name some of my collection. Chomper (Bosc) was brought home and I dumped a dozen crickets in his tub and he chomped down, my brother was watching land before time at the time as well. Mogli (jungle, carpet) Jungle book.

Well, I can’t leave out my darlings that have passed on because they will always be special to me.

Germ-me – Female Calico.
Story: She was 5 yrs old when she was given to me, I was 6. I named her Germ-me because the markings on her back looked like huge “germs” (I have always been a science geek) and she was “mine.” *This is the thought process of my 6yr old brain…
I took the word “Germ” and the word “mine,” changed “mine” to “me” and got Germ-me. She lived to be 15, passing away just before Christmas when I was 16.

O.P. Cat – Black and white, three-legged cat. The first thing I thought of when I saw him was that he was an orphaned cat. I took the “O” and “P” from orphan and named him O.P. Cat.

Story: When I was 16 my roommate and I had stayed up late one night watching T.V., around 2 a.m. he decided to go to the store and get cigarettes. I went to bed while he was gone and woke up gagging because I smelled this horrendous odor. He was giggling like a dingdong and then I heard the tiniest “mew” and was awake instantly. Jim had heard mewing coming from the storm drain and crawled into it to get the kitten. The kitten was so tiny; he was barely 6 inches long and all bones. His front left leg is what smelled so bad. He had gangrene; we assume either a brown recluse or rattlesnake bit him, judging by the amount of tissue damage to his front leg, vet agreed with our assumption. I took him to my vet, paid for the amputation, and had the smartest, most wonderful cat-human ever. He would sit in a chair on his haunches at the dinner table with his paw beside his plate and eat with me like a person would. He used to lie on my belly when I was pregnant and then after my son was born, he would “herd” my son around the house like a dog. Cutest thing ever. He climbed trees, caught snakes, mice, and plucked birds out of the air. O.P. Cat was the only constant thing I had in my life until I met my present husband; I think that’s why I loved him so much. He gave me 12 of the best years before cancer took him.

Prince George the Turd. a.k.a Turd Kitty a.k.a Princess George, later shortened to Princess.Fawn and Black Tabby. My son’s dad named her.

Story: I was 4 months pregnant, showing quite prominently, married to my first husband. We were preparing for the long drive from Jax, FL to Maryland (new duty station) and happened by a pet store. We are both animal enthusiasts and decided to stop at the pet store. As soon as we opened the door we heard the hyper meows of a lone kitten in this big cage. The kitten was all over the place trying to get our attention. The owner said the kitten was male and asked if I wanted to hold him. I said sure, I can’t pass up animal loving.

The kitten bounced into my arms and scrambled up my belly to nuzzle my ears, purring like a Harley Davidson! I was in love and the owner said we could have him for 10.00. I looked at the man and told him I was not paying 10.00 for a cat when I can get one for free. He comes back with, “O.K. You can have him for 5.00 but you have to hurry and leave before my wife finds out.” Who could decline and offer like that?!? So we left with our “Five Dollar Kitty.” We had wanted to get O.P. Cat a playmate anyhow and the kitten was amazingly affectionate. We were moving to “Prince George” county, so that is how my husband named the kitten. On the drive to Maryland the kitten would scramble up my husband’s chest and take the potatoe chip out of his mouth and eat it. He exclaimed, “Turd Kitty!” After arriving home we took “him” to the vet and learned it was actually a she. So the named changed to Princess George the Turd. She and O.P. Cat became inseparable and both would actually play chase with us. Darnedest thing I have ever seen. We would be in the yard with them and they would run away, we would chase and then stop and run away, they would spin around and chase us. My son had a great deal of fun with those two. She gave me 13 great years. She died 3 years after O.P. Cat.

Fritz – Solid Black Cat. (Meaning: to become inoperable, “It’s on the Fritz”) Fritz is a spaz.

Story: Shortly after O.P. Cat passed, a friend of ours found two solid black feral male kittens roaming around their house and started feeding them. They guessed their age at a couple of weeks because of how tiny they were. They continued feeding them for the next 3 months and then they had to move. They managed to catch them and brought them to me, asking if I would give them a home. I fell in love with both of them at first sight; my husband didn’t even try to stop me. Probably because this was shortly after I buried O.P. Cat and his death was devastating to me. I named the largest Fritz because he was hyperactive, all over the place all the time and always getting into trouble. He was hell on wheels with enough energy to make the Energizer Bunny look slow. The other I named LB (Lovey Baby) because all he wanted was to be loved on all the time. He escaped the house and was hit by a car.

I still have my Fritzzy. He is still a spaz. He has a hair fetish and drools like a dog. It’s really gross. A few years back a friend asked me if I named him after the cartoon “Fritz the Cat” and I said no, never heard of it and then I did research and found the name is still fitting for my cat. My husband calls him the dirty old man because he will sit on the bathtub ledge when I am soaking and just watch me or stand at the shower and peek his head in. He is a moody old fart and will change from loving to vicious without notice. He is still “on the Fritz.”

Diesel – Silver Mackerel Tabby (Evie’s brother). This was the name the Humane Society gave him and Hubby liked it.
Evie – Silver Mackerel Tabby. Evie likes eating vegetables. She reminded me of “EVE” from Wall-E (came out a few months before we got the kittens). I started with “Eve” but she didn’t come to that name. I accidentally called her Evie one day and she came running, it stuck.

Story: A year after Princess died Fritz was driving me nuts with loud meowing. His voice is near 80 to 90 decibels when he gets going. He missed her and if not for him being lonely I would not have gotten any more animals. It just hurt too much to see them go.

We went to every pet store and animal shelter in the city and as I put it to my husband, “None of them spoke to me.” Then we went to the Humane Society. My husband and I split and went different ways. I was a few isles down and saw this itty-bitty morose looking kitten. She looked so sad and heartbroken that my own heart lurched. I had to have her. I located my husband and he told me that Diesel literally reached out and grabbed him and he loved it. It was sheer coincidence that we picked 2 from the same liter.

Diesel is our fat cat, weighing 15.5 pounds now. (He lost a pound since his surgery 2 weeks ago) Diesel is not a smart cat, but he is affectionate. He actually got lost one day when he dodged out the door one morning when I was letting Fritz out. Fritz is usually on the prowl for about an hour and then comes home. 3 hours passed and he hadn’t come home yet. Then my hubby came home around 11 that morning and said that he saw the two a couple of streets down. I got extremely pissed because hubby didn’t call me (HE HAS 2 CELLS PHONES WITH HIM AT ALL TIMES!) and tell me so I could get them. My neighbor and I drive down to where hubby said he saw them and then I hear Fritz meowing. I follow the sound and Fritz is in the stormdrain and I’m thinking to myself, “Oh dear God I am going to have to crawl down there..*%@#$” Then Fritz pops out and I hear Diesel, I look to the right and Diesel is sitting beside a house curled into a ball, looking scared to death. Took him home, lectured hubby, Diesel is not allowed out unless I am with him. He is stupid. I am thankful Fritz stayed with him (Surprised too).

Evie is our Midnight Ninja. a.k.a Licky-tongue. She will lick anything you put in front of her; arms, hand, head, pillow case, blanket, whatever. She has a grooming fetish and hair fetish. She loves to grab a hold of people’s heads, pull it close to her face as she proceeds to lick and rub all over. I will have to video this, she is quite forceful.

We don’t allow our cats in the bedroom at night because none of them know how to lie down and be still. They like to lie ON our heads when we are sleeping. She would slip upstairs just before we go to bed and hide in various spots in our room. She waits until we turn all the lights out and then appears on the bed beside us. I have never felt her jump on the bed, she is just there. Some nights we allow her to sleep with us, most often we don’t.

We got Sasha and Hendrix last year, not many stories for them yet.

Sasha – Ball Python. I love the name Sasha. I love many Russian names.

Story: Previous owner got the BP from a breeder and the breeder said the BP was female. Her first name was Stacy and I didn’t think that was fitting, especially if “she” turned out to be a “he,” so I chose Sasha since it is a unisex name.

Sasha is very curious and loves to be held. She is not active when she is in her cage, but once taken out, she wants to investigate everything. Evie and Sasha have some strange relationship going on. Sasha always slithers towards Evie no matter where she is. And Evie is always trying to rub against, lick (grooming mode gone haywire), and love on Sasha. I don’t know if Sasha wants to curl near Evie for warmth (cats body temp ranges from 96 to 102) or thinks Evie would be a tasty meal.

Hendrix – Savannah Monitor. Named after Jimmy Hendrix by previous owner. My son loves Jimmy Hendrix and kept the name.

Story: Hendrix is nothing like his name sake, complete opposite. Hendrix was my son’s 15th Birthday present. I did research for a year before I decided to get a monitor for my son. I needed to make sure I could handle caring for it when my son goes to college. I read everything I could find on monitors and according to everything I read I foresaw no issue with taking over.

I did learn a very valuable lesson in taking on the care of Hendrix. Bowel movements can be an issue. I must admit that in all my research, the magnitude of their bowel movements, what it takes to clean it, and how disgusting it is, was not mentioned ONCE. I am not ashamed to say that I never once thought this would be an issue and if I had known ahead of time, I would not have gotten him. Trial and error is not a good thing!! I REALLY wish I had found you all first.

Because of the poor environment Hendrix had with his previous owner, he is nothing like any monitor I researched or watched videos of. He is lazy and equivalent to a garbage disposal door stop; eats but doesn’t do anything. I feel very sad for him because the life was sucked out of him by his previous owner.

We've named all our warm blooded animals after video game characters (Chocobo, Daisy, Bowser) and our cold blooded friends after gems or minerals. Well now let's see...

Blue because he's orange and that gets people thinking (something people don't seem to do often enough).
Whiskers because he has such well developed facial features that are designed to give him sensory input about his surroundings just like whiskers do for mammals.
Tanner after my favourite driver.
Gracie because she's incredibly graceful as she moves about.
Sol due to her sunshine yellow colour.
Bubbles because what else do you name something so round and full of colours that will explode if not handled gently?
Boom-Boom is named such because it reminds me of a woman with large, exaggerated...attribues, and I want her to be a Rubenesque kinda girl.
Skyler is named after the dude that asked me to take her.
Tagz will always remind me of the Herculean effort the thing put into defending itself for no particular reason on the day it arrived at my door.

I think that about covers it, and as you can see, they're totally logical :)

I have a red-tailed boa named Basil. She's about 2 years old, 4ft long, active but docile around people.

I named her from the movie "A Clockwork Orange". In the movie the main character Alex has a snake named Basil, and during its short time on screen, there is a moment where it is poking at poster on Alex's wall.

The first time I held her she was on my neck (she was smaller then) and I was on my bed. She started poking her nose at a poster on my wall, much like Alex's snake in the movie. So, the name stuck.
According to the vet though, her name is "Dazzle", and because of her well-defined designs that nickname has stuck.

She's the snake both in my avatar and on my profile picture. In my avatar she was on my neck and started prying into my mouth- I was careful to keep my mouth as open as possible and not move. She didn't care for it, I doubt she'll do it again.

Emerson, Lake & Palmer - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emerson,_Lake_%26_Palmer)

Emerson, Lake & Palmer, also known as ELP, are an English progressive rock (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Progressive_rock) supergroup (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Supergroup_(music)).[1] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emerson,_Lake_%26_Palmer#cite_note-0) They found success in the 1970s and sold over forty million albums[2] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emerson,_Lake_%26_Palmer#cite_note-1) and headlined large stadium concerts. The band consists of Keith Emerson (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Keith_Emerson) (keyboards), Greg Lake (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Greg_Lake) (bass guitar, vocals, guitar) and Carl Palmer (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carl_Palmer) (drums, percussion). They are one of the most commercially successful progressive rock bands and from the outset focused on combining classical pieces with rock music.

I actually let my kids name all my snakes and my wife names her own. My little guy loves him some non-bloody Mortal Kombat, thusly he has named my Snakes Cabal, Melina and Ermac.

I named my uromastyx Uncle Foot.

Well I am just giving the living as I have had way too many pets in my life. My son named my first rtb Gabby after a friend of mine who can't stand reptiles ( my son is 4 and that is the first actual name. he has ever gave to anything. ) My wife claimed my second rtb Scamper. She also named my 3rd rtb iota ( from brother bear I think). My wife named her cockatiel Zeke. My ferret came with the name snook which my wife tried to change it to Bandit. It didn't stick. My dogs name was Bobbie which now answers to Kayleigh. Again my wife. I named my atb striker for obvious reasons. Thankfully I am quicker than he is! And my female beardie is Blossom cuase she is orange. So she is orange Blossom.

Question Wayne. What is Jonah? And do you mean Cain and Able from the Bible.?

This is a good thread, I like hearing the name origins.

Our oldest cat came with (rescue) Sadie and I'm a Beatles fan so her whole name is Sexy Sadie but I've called her skitty or skitten (Sadie Kitten) and for some reason muffin the whole time we've had her. She is the only cat I've ever seen that will come to the sound of her name 100% of the time. She think she's a dog and even plays fetch.

2nd cat is Gimli from Lord of the Rings. He was a tiny kitten when Becky found him and brought home and he played just fearlessly with our golden retriever Strider, also from LOTR, so I named him after Gimli the fearless dwarf.

The youngest dog is Star after Arwen (the evenStar of her people) from LOTR (are we seeing a pattern here?). But even though she's 5 or 6 now she's still and will forever by 'the Puppy'.

The oldest dog is Max. He was a rescue and came with the name. I made his official name Maxwell Q. Klinger because I'm a MASH fan.

Our new jungle carpet python got called Jerome after Jerome Bettis, one of my all-time favorite Steelers players largely because he's Steelers colors himself.

I don't name any of my fish though some of them get un-official names like meanie, blue guy, yellow-tail etc.

I dont' worry too much about names except for dogs. I always test out the name before making it official because I don't want to sound stupid calling their names outside. ;^)

My oldest daughter had a cat named "Bubbles" , One day Bubbles was overdue to come inside...

So here I am standing in the street in front of my house late afternoon on a nice day shouting "BUBBLES" over and over at the top of my lungs.....

Can only imagine what my neighbours thought...

Probably figured I needed a Xanax:eek:

Dumerils-
Black Betty, Popeye and Lulu were old time cartoon characters that we were thinking about at the time we acquired this trio. Lulu is gone now but the other two we still have.

Gandalf the Grey and Arwen are characters from Lord of the Rings.

Euryale was one of Medusas sisters and since the name Medusa was already in use by one of our breeder rats we settled for this.

Miss Piggy was due to her appetite when we first got her and that made her bf Kermit.

Macklots-
Merlin was named after the wizard

Vanessa sounded like a cool snake name.

Lancelot and Guinevere continues the King Arthur theme for the macklots.

Brazilian Rainbows-
Ramón sounded like a cool Latin American name

Rita is a Portugese name meaning "pearl" which she was when I found her in the midst of everything else at that reptile show.

Irian Jaya Carpets-
Mick was named after Mick Dundee.

Sheila is an australian term for female.

Even though I know these carpets did not originate from Australia, I wanted names with an Australian flavor to them.

I think mine is obvious when you see the whole lot but some names on there own wouldn't automatically make you realise what the theme is..

Jungle Corns: Charis, Caspar.

Corns: Tonks, Lupin, Fawkes, Phoenix, Dilys, Nimbus, Otto, Fleur, Muggle, Muldoon, Morfin, Kendra, Magic, Falco, Melinda, Weasley, Lily, Newton.

Boas: Narcissa, Ursula, Phineas, Wulfric, Merope.

Kings and milks: Azkaban, Riddle, Orion, Troy, Lockhart, Marvolo.

Hognose: Hufflepuff.

Royal Python: Bellatrix.

:D

I have 3 corns still without names. Will decide on them once I collect them :)

You gotta buy yourself a big python female and name her Nagini, maybe male second and name him Voldemort. Another Royal and name him Severus.

My horses came with their names but I liked them so I kept them. Raven is my FresianxMorgan mare and Aries is my Arab cross gelding. When I decide to breed Raven to a large body arab or throughbred I want to name the baby annabell Lee for a girl or Imp of peversion for a colt. To keep with the Edgar Allen Poe theme

Draco my rat snake I named after the harry potter charecter and I think it suits him.
Electra after the comic book because she is a red color
Simba was called Kenya baby for a while but I felt stupid calling a Kenyan sand boa Kenya...
Cobain after Kurt Cobain just liked the name

Gunner (our russian blue kitty) was named after a Colt I was training who died with a similar personality

Maddox (grey and white kitty) I just liked the name.

I usually change names a few times until something sticks

Miko[Netherland Dwarf bunny] my friend originally named Mika but found out he is a boy!
T-rex[Chinese water dragon] his name was originally Rex but I added the T because I though it suit him, especially when he chows down on some crickets.
And Dylan O.G Kush[lab/chow mix] because he is an O.G [Original Ganster] :D
