While I was cleaning off his cage accessories in the bathroom, Jack just sat outside the doorway and watched me (assuming he could see.) He normally wanders down the hallway, but today, after crawling out of the bathroom into the hallway, he came back to supervise me.. ??

Love, love, love it!

Are they as messy as their reputation tells them to be, poop wise? How often do you have to clean?

Thanks! I hope to have one someday.

Thanks! Yes, they have very fast metabolisms, so they poop frequently and disgustingly. I probably clean his tank twice a week. I wouldn't put up with that with any other species, but indigos are incredible animals. :)

Thanks for the quick reply.

Yeah, I think I will learn to put up with it as well. I am almost 43, so may be a great gift for the big 45...

'Scuse my ignorance... What is an indigo? I can see it's probably a colubrid, but what type of a snake specifically? Adult size?

Hmm? Yes it's a colubrid not sure what you're asking though :p They belong to the genus Drymarchon (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Drymarchon).

Ohh I guess what I asking is, saying "Indigo" is like saying "Corn Snake"?
Edit: that wikipedia answered that. Yes :)

That's a real beauty. This is the snake that got me into snakes as a kid. I read all I could about them and was all set to ask my parents for one until I saw they sold for about $500-$1000 apiece! Even waaaayyyy back in the '70s! How is the temperment, size, feeding response, etc. I've always heard they were gentle giants. VERY jealous of your Indigo! :)

Thanks everyone!

Indigos are great. They pretty much eat anything and everything. Mine goes nuts at feeding time, but other than that, there is virtually no chance of getting bitten. Indigos seem to have no fear of humans (or they quickly lose the fear,) so they are great to handle. I've used mine at a bunch of school and museum presentations. They max out at about 7' to 8'.

The only downside is that since they eat often and a lot, they do require more cage cleaning than most snakes.

Thanks again,
Ed
