So I homeschool and for a long term project my parents might let me breed snakes. Basically I'll just document the process and present it when I'm done. I'm probably going to get 2 BPs or Corns at an expo in October then breed them. Thoughts? Suggestions? Tips?

My advice, and some might not agree with this is really make sure you have people that will take your babies, if you don't have a base for where these snakes are going you will end up giving them to a pet store and more often then not they end up with less then educated owners and I've seen more then my fair share of snakes dead in pet stores.
I would love to breed but this is why I could never do it, I would never be able to just send them somewhere where I wouldn't know the people getting them or how they are being taken care of and especially around me there are so many people breeding that that is where the babies end up and they more then usually end up dead or back with the breeder.
Its just something to think about, I don't want to rain on your parade I just want you to think about it now instead of later when you have to make the choice about what you are going to do with the offspring.

Yeah I haven't really thought anything through and I'm not even sure I'll be able to do it. Just an idea I had.

Yeah and it would be really cool, I just wanted to tell you before it got to the point of no return. Heck the guy near me who I got my spider off of just had 3 clutchs, his first clutches and he can't find any sells and he keeps coming back to me hoping i'll buy more, the sad thing is is he is hoping to take them to the expo to get people to buy them but there are going to be so many other breeders their that have a reputation and where he just started I can't see him selling many if any. And he is on of two in my old area which there is like 3 every 5 blocks up here(where I just recently moved) I just don't want to see any babies suffer and I know you wouldn't want to either.

Just wondering where in Canada you live? I would love a spider or other morph of BP for a good price. Out near me, all I have found is normals (some with hets), albino's and Piebalds (too expensive for me at the moment)

figures!!!!! guess I'll just have to keep looking then!!
Youngster, if you can find enough homes (even here on the forums) for one clutch of babies, then I think this would be a great project to do. It would be so interesting that you couldn't HELP but learn alot from it.

I'll have homes for all of them. I also plan on keeping at least one female. That's not really the question I'm just not sure if it's going to work out. Hopefully!

well you already have one cornsnake and from what I've seen, in my area at least, they are the easier sell than a BP. IF you decide to go forth with this project, that would be the route I would go. Assuming you've got a few years to raise the cornsnakes to sexual maturity I would begin by posting on craigslist or an area herp-owner board (if there is one) and seeing if you can drum up some interest before you actually breed your selected species. I would start a year in advance and try and get an interest list and some sort of commitment from people, maybe a simple ten dollar non-refundable deposit so you don't get people that say "yeah I would like one" and then back out once the babies are born. If you can establish yourself you can do away with that like Snakesitter has done with living gems because it seems he doesn't have a problem getting them all sold. Remember if you decide to make this a business you'll have to file all the appropriate paperwork as well. I think its a great idea, but make sure you know what you're getting yourself into before you do it.

Youngster, I would be willing to help you place the babies if you breed, seeing as I'm not that far from you.

I don't really think it's going to be a business to be honest. I think I would like that job but what I'm talking about right now is a project following the breeding of just one clutch.

That would be very much appreciated!

Awesome guys :) The only problem is my mind was money but my parents say it'll be fine. My dad and I are making two enclosures for the parents then a rack for the children. Gungirl where in Vermont do you live? I live 20 minutes away from Keene.

Hmm I wonder how old the youngest person to breed snakes on their own was. :P I bet I'm pretty close. BTW thanks everyone I can't wait to start but I still have a month before I can do anything!
