Whats the cage in the blackground of the sav pics?

I had some extra bamboo window blinds (i got a bunch on clearance once for $2). I rolled them out and turned them sideways and wrapped them around the back and sides of the outside of his tank. thought it would make him feel a little more secure in his enclosure rather than leaving it open. is that what you are asking about?

I love it when a monitor is healthy enough to stand up and reach for stuff

thanks, I have really taken my time with him and slowly got him to gain my trust. this was the first time I tong fed him and it couldn't have gone better. Here is a few more pics (i am so proud of this day...can you tell :) )

That's awesome, too often you see over weight monitors who have lived a life of only mice and rats and in turn are fat and miserable. I keep up with your Chomper posts, such a good looking guy. I can't wait until mine gets to his size (although he is growing fast as it is)

putting a pinkie on a tray seems like a good idea, I'm gonna have to try that, first time feeding my new BRB tonight. I was gonna do it yesterday but when I had time he was curled up in his hide with the "let me sleep" look, so I didn't disturb him.

Sadly i don't have a lot of feeding shots.. most of my photos are of them doing something cute in the cages, or taking them out of photoshoots, but the above pics were "feeding photoshoots", put them on the cloth and everything, so i'll do more of those once we get a computer.:)

Yup. That's frozen/thawed Tilapia fillet.:) I buy it, dice it, and drop it in a zip-lock and i have months worth of that food item right there.

You can buy frozen silversides too, which are actually whole fish, meant for predator fish, but i don't like those as much, and neither do my snakes.:D

then of course there's feeder guppies, live and whole, which sometimes i freeze and feed too, since that's by far their favorite fish... but talk about pricey.

awesome thanks for the info, since you have made me want those cute little buggers... I may as well know how to feed it lol I know they eat earth worms too, what about things like horned worms?

redsided
10-24-11, 01:25 PM
NO! Those aren't worms. They're just bugs, no better then crickets which they can't digest!

Nightcrawlers from Walmart, chopped, or little earthworms from outside (only thing you can feed from outside really) and pinkies will complete the diet. Some people don't feed any fish... my snakes love it and it's more readily availble for me than anything else so i do.

I'd post a really good caresheet but the site that supports it is under construction.

I know you weren't, which is why i compared them to crickets.:) Meal worms, horned worms... they aren't actually worms. When we say worms, we're talkin':

Nightcrawlers and eathworms (nightcrawlers are earthworms, just bigger ones)

http://www.amystewart.com/images/worm-nightcrawler.jpg

There is one kid that of WORM worm, that is the worst thing you can feed them however.

RED WRIGGLERS. AKA red, compost, or trout worms. Stay away.. stay FAR away..

Pika is a champ when it comes to eating. He's been back at my place for two days but true to form, he ate! You better believe this left a nice lump in his tummy :D

Once he's done digesting I'll do that updated photo shoot of him. But since I know you guys miss him....... here are some feeding pics to hold you over ;)

I feed on this plastic thing because I feed him the rat wet and if I put it inside his enclosure a lot of the reptibark sticks to the rat and I'd hate to see him eat any of it. Plus he doesn't seem to care, lol.

Oh! and as you can see, he's definitely done shedding. So photos will be awesome later this week!!

But i might try it the next feeding, see if any of them will do the upside down nom nom !

BarelyBreathing

I've been really wanting a monitor or other lizard lately and am trying to figure out which one. I either want a smaller semi-arboreal monitor or frilled dragon.

BarelyBreathing
02-03-12, 02:51 PM

wow, that's pretty good size, do you have a preference between the blues/greens?

BarelyBreathing
02-03-12, 03:44 PM
Blue trees and green trees? I like green trees better (green's my favorite color), but between blue tails and blue/green trees, I like blue tails better.

millertime89
02-03-12, 04:39 PM
ah, I misread your earlier post, thought you said it was a blue tree, brain is off for the day. Any particular reason you prefer the blue tails to the blue/green trees?

BarelyBreathing
02-03-12, 05:00 PM
Temperament. The blue and green are fairly shy species that rarely make appearances. Blue tails (or at least most of them) are fairly bold. They have a reputation of aggressively defending their territory, as well. Max likes to try to bite hubby's face off.

millertime89
02-04-12, 02:33 PM
lol, I'm looking for one on the smaller size that has no problem being out but isn't exactly aggressive.

BarelyBreathing
02-04-12, 03:08 PM
Get ackies.

If you want something more arboreal but still on the bold side, check out the black tree monitor. They can be fairly shy, but they're generally the first to come out of hiding out of the tree monitors.

The bunny is 1 1/2 pounds.

I feed her every two weeks instead of every 10 days.

Ok here might be a dumb question but I'm gonna ask anyways

So lets say a smaller snake refuses a fuzzy, if you offer it to a bigger snake, will Snake coil the small prey item, or will it just take it? Never had a refusal but something I've always wondered.

Not my animal, but my friend's....posted with his permission. This is Medusa, a 9 year old royal he recently adopted from a friend of ours.

P.S - I helped him get his first snake a year ago this month. Now he has 3 and is a very good keeper.....makes me proud :D

Here's one of my Paradox Albinos doing things backwards:p

If you look closely at the paw of the mouse, you will notice it resembles a certain gesture given when someone is really peeved:p:laugh:

I don't have any pictures, but my ball python finally ate after several months, now that it's starting to warm up. (The weather is still way out of wack, one day high 60s, then low 80's, then mid 70s. No me gusta.) Luckily he didn't lose too much weight, still very happy and grateful for the meal! I'll be feeding my red tail, Cloud this Friday so maybe I'll have some pics next Tuesday.

My Ball Python Diamond eats whenever I feed him. I'm glad I don't have to deal with him going off food.
I know I should get him on rats, I just got him mice without thinking.

Looks like blood coming out of the rodent's mouth.

Yeah, it's blood, I think he was over-constricting a bit, lol. He's been feeding regularly ever since I've gotten him on to f/t(which was really easy) but if he goes off food, I'll be surprised but I can deal with it.

reptileexperts, love the photo of the diamondback and the pied ball python!! Out of curiosity, why was the ball python eating upside down like that? were you holding it when it reached down for the rat? or did it get the rat and then you picked him up? on a side note, that pied ball python is gorrrrrrgeous

Alessia - he actually would not feed for me on F/t, I tried all the tricks in the book and so while I was about to give up I picked him up and just kind of held him and he gave me a feeding twitch, so I grabbed some tongs and picked up a small hopper, and sure enough he took it and fed just like that. After feeding in my hand hanging like a carpet for 3 weeks, he started eating fully in his tub :-) Here he is currently at 380 grams.

Here's Cloud the feeding before his last one. I had mistakenly set him down on the bed, near the snake hook, and he grabbed it when I picked him up. He wouldn't let go, so I just left him on it. He ate hanging from it, silly thing.
