I was wondering if any one can give me some help,I have a savannah monitor who is impacted. He hasn't gone to the bathroom for about a month now.I've called all the vets in my area and it seems nobody can help me without seeing him.The problem is that the average price they quote me is around $300,and I really don't have the money right now.I know you shouldn't oun animals without being able to take care of them properly but I was recently laid-off so money is very tight. If any one can give me some advice on what to give him and how I would go about giving him an enima It would be greatly appreciated ,as I hate seeing him like this.PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Where in ottawa do you live, If its not too far from downtown I could always swing by and give you a hand. You can message me on ssnakess or on facebook. It shouldn't be hard to fix unless its super bad.

What are the temps and humidity in the tank. Sav's shouldn't have a problem with impaction if the temps are correct. More info can help, temps, tanks size, substrate, food...

I forgot to mention that I have been giving him warm baths daily and it hasn't helped. The tank conditions are roughly 100-110 degrees on the warm side,80 degrees on the cool side ,humidity 55-65%. I'm using peatmoss for his substrate. His tank is 4x2,the lizard himself is roughly 2ft. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

You need to fix the hunbandry for your monitor asap. Read The Savannah Monitor, Varanus exanthematicus (http://savannahmonitor.org/) and make the changes to the cage. Having the correct husbandry is crucial to the overall health and without having the proper conditions for the animal you will continue to have health issues.

I have to agree, the temps are too low, they like to dig... and it should be eating crustaceans, mollusks, worms and insects.

It may sound really silly but my beardie was really impacted and the baths weren't really working so I increased the water temp by a couple degrees (nothing too hot or dangerous just a touch like 3 degrees maybe) and while he was in the bath I had my hand under him and I gently massaged his belly. After a couple days of that he pooped BIG time and we have had no problems since

Thanks for your input,I'm giving him a warm bath daily, incresed the temps in his enclosure, changed his substrate so hopefully things will begin to move.

His monitor should be fine now, he couldn't get another lamp so we moved the location of the lamp and that brought up the temps in the hot end by about 15 degrees and the monitor perked up, warm baths and a change in diet will be solved tomorrow when I make a delivery to his place :)

Stephan, you are a good man. HOGGISLAND, So glad things are working out for you and thank you for being a responsible pet owner and taking advice you were given rather than fighting it and allowing your Sav to suffer.

I know Im a noob here and the problem was solved but for future reference you can give a lizard mineral oil.I had an impacted Northern bluetongue years ago and the vet had me give her mineral oil and do enemas.I do think it was the mineral oil that worked it out though.Anyway just thought Id let anyone know in case it helps.

He not only took the advice, he soaked it in like a sponge and never once got defensive. Every change I suggested he started fixing immediately, hes exactly the type of person I'd enjoy dealing with in the future, and a great new member to the forums. The changes will cost him about 150$ and he didn't care, the pets health was his concern.

(Most of the changes were free, the food will cost a bit initially then pennies in the long run)

Bahaha oh man I'm pretty sure he forgot the lamp in his rush to get out the door..

And congratulations, Steph's been telling me all about the changes, and how well he's doing now. It's so awesome to hear about people that love their animals and do what they can to make the best for them. Good luck with everything :D
