View Full Version : Jack Russel Terrier pain in the butt

What a major pain in the butt. Now that uncle Tom is safely in jail, we wound up with his dog.
Since we already have 3, another is no biggie. So yesterday Dorothy and I are out walking the dogs when suddenly Spot noticed a woodchuck and pursued it, right down the hole.
Ever try to retrieve a dog that is down a woodchuck burrow, and has the resident animal by the head? , it don't come out that easy.
After digging with a shovel, I managed to get hold of Spot's back legs, I pulled that little monster out and he still had the yearling woodchuck clamped down in his mouth by the poor things face.
The woodchuck put up a heck of a fight, made out OK with minor cuts.

he's a hunter...
My 3 dogs are cockapoos (Cocker spaniel X Poodle) and would rather swim and play ball, Spot jumps in the water and tries to catch the fish.
My dogs bark at animals, spot eats them...
Got hold of a wild rat, the rat didn't make it.

jack russels are so efficiant at hunting they get used as ratters over here
my friend uses 3 or 4 jack russels at a time to kill all the rats at the local chicken farms
i've seen video of them going up against thousands of rats at the same time.the jacks seem oblivious to the rats bitting them

Yup, we have a rat terrier, which is a longer legged version a jack, but otherwise similar. Venninne goes to ground all the time after rats and muskrats.
Infernalis, all I can suggest is to "retrain" the dog on recall over and over in your yard and home. When I was training Venninne for recall, I left a 6' leash attached to her (that way if they DON'T listen, you only have to get within 6' of them to get control)
we did this for months and months. But now when Venninne goes to ground and I feel she's been in there too long, I just call her to me and she DOES back herself out of the hole.
Good luck, jacks ARE more stubborn that Ratties ;)

Little monster attacked a raccoon today..
The poor coon was down at the creek catching it's crayfish dinner when the dogs spotted it, The Jack Russel immediately jumped in and went after the poor thing.
I had to hit the dog with a stick to make him stop.

Yes, the raccoon got away, Spot has punctures in his jaw, but he has all his shots.

ouchy!! make sure you clean out those punctures really well. racoon bites are DIRTY!!
keep a close eye on the punctures as they heal, if they mound up or look swollen, you'll need to pick the scab off, squeeze the pus out and clean again, keep doing this until it heals nicely without pustules and swelling.
If you have it or can get it, hibitane is one the the best antiseptic washes available without a prescription. Also if you can get it without a prescription in the USA, bactroban is the absolute BEST anti-bacterial cream on the market.

theres no link for me to look at??
or are you talking about the bactroban itself?? I only use Bactroban on my dogs wounds. 21 years in the animal care field, and so far wounds heal faster with the bactroban. It used to be OTC here in Canada and has now gone to prescription only.

My bad, I thought I included the picture. I get mine from the vet, it's even great on herps.
"Silvadene (generic name: Silver Sulfadiazine) is a topical antibiotic that belongs to the sulfonamide group of drugs."
Will even clear a septic wound.
Silvadene acts on the cell membrane and wall by eliminating any existing bacteria. Additionally, it helps by inhibiting infectivity and other forms of bacterial and fungal growth bacterial growth so they can't spread to other areas of the skin or infiltrate the blood. According to drugs.com, clinical studies and data show Silvadene's effectiveness in restraining bacteria that are unresponsive resistant to other antimicrobial agents.

I know that stuff!! when I was a little girl, my family always held reunions on the beach. One year some ***hole covered his/her fire up with rocks instead of putting it out. I was walking backwards, goofing off and POW!! I stepped into the heated ring of rocks, fell down into it and......well lets say I had first, second and third degree burns on my hands, feet, bottom and well..... in other very uncomfortable places.
THAT is the product they SLATHERED me in at the hospital, and when they found out mamma was a single mom, they squeezed out the remains of every tube they had used (in thier hurry there was alot left over) out into a tub and sent it home for all my re-dressings.
I have NOT ONE SCAR to show for the whole horrible, humiliating ordeal. I thank the SSD for that!!

I first learned of it when my moms furnace exploded in my face, my skin fell off 1/2 of my face, my shoulders and parts of my chest.
I too have no scarring, it was unreal. when I took off the shirt, my skin fell off with it, I was slathered in SSD for weeks, everything healed up perfectly.
I could have wound up looking like a monster.
Then one of my snakes had a big infected boil, the vet hooked me up with a tube of it, I keep it handy for all my critter needs.

I know that you are angry with the dog, but really they were bred to do that.
Jacks are crazy hunters and they are efficient. When they are hunting and the prey fights back, jacks just fight harder. They are also stubborn and once they focus on something you can't break that focus. I have lost many a live feeder to my jack....

To clear things up.. The dog was thrust upon us by circumstance.
No problem taking care of him, but his walks in the woods are over with.
My three cockapoos will not miss out, Spot will have to stay home when we go deep into the property.

I wasn't being a jerk....sorry if you took it that way. Jack Russells are a handful! I chose to have a jack and I get frustrated all the time with her LOL.
I suggest taking him for walks on a leash with you. Jacks need to release a lot of energy or they become a problem.
Good luck with him :D

I'm really surprised your cockapoos don't try and chase down anything. Cocker spaniels are hunting/gun dogs. That is what they were bred for back in the day anyway, mainly water fowl and small game. My little cocker goes nuts for birds, squirrels, etc. Poodles were sometimes used for waterfowling too. I grew up with poodles but have owned cocker spaniels most of my adult life. Both are great dogs and cockapoos seem to inherit the best of both!!

I think being raised from puppies in a house full of other animals has something to do with that.
They live with... Mice, Rats, Snakes, Cats & one really big lizard that could kill them if he wanted to.

Wayne, Jacks quite often respond to "dead" as a command to cease and desist hunting, almost like an inbred command they they just know. Also works with most retrieving animals.
I know where your jack came from and it maybe that he never heard it enough growing up to respond now but our jack knew it from a puppy, he grabbed one of our cats couple of days after we got him and i said it automatically as we had a labrador before that was gun trained and he immediately let go and sat down as if he had been trained to do it for years, he was only 8 weeks old.
When we go out in fields etc and he gets scent of rabbit or anyhThing he can chase it is the only command that stops him 99.9% of the time.

Yes, I know... the things we tolerate for the critters.
Bottom line is "Spot" is a happy dog, he has it good, so I will accept the fact that he is doing what he was bred to do.
Still annoying though.

yes it is!! use orange apeel, and deoderoc in your truck to get rid of the smell. May take a few applications but when my HUSKY decided to tangle with a skunk (bit it in the *** and chucked it up in the air!) those 2 products are what saved us all from the stench!!

Oh man Spot really is a good tracker!!
Last night someone hit a nice doe with their Car/Truck right out front.
She was big and damaged too badly to cut up and eat, so I called the sheriff department and they asked if I could be kind enough to place the carcass back in the woods where the coyote pack could just eat it.
So, I wrapped a chain around her neck and dragged her back into my neighbours woods.. Hey, I walk the dogs in MY woods all the time, I did not want to risk them finding whats left of it.
I took the dogs out tonight for a potty break, and spot disappeared!
Put his nose to the ground and followed the scent all the way back.
I had to drive out there to bring him home. Knew he was in trouble too, when I opened the door on the truck, he went to the back seat (I have a king cab pickup) and rode back there to the house.
Uncle Tom must have beat that dog or something, Spot was afraid I was going to punish him for doing what Jack Russel Terriers do, HUNT.

I don't unserstand people that beat dogs!!!! I got our collie/lab mix 4 months ago
She was 10 months old and they had just got rid of her last puppy! Anyway every time I walk into the house or room she puts her belly to the floor and slinks away. I have never hit this dog in any way, shape or form. I seldom even raise my voice to her cause she is a great dog. She is still scared out of her mind every time I come into the house.

Tom's in jail for smashing a jar over my son's head, He punched our dog Ace with a closed fist once while Dorothy was holding him, just because Ace was howling at the towns fire whistle.
Dorothy and Ace are as close as Dorothy and Chomper are.
So that didn't go over well.

This is why I chose to have snakes over most 4-legged animals. lol
I never understood people who mistreat animals. Doesn't matter if it's a pet or not. Just like I never understood hunting and killing for sport (but that's another topic entirely)

Try lying on the floor with her and talking to her softly or reading a child's book to her. It's a submissive posture and might help. I know to some it may sound stupid but these are some methods I have used to relax and tame injured dogs. Having a handful of cheese balls (sandwich cheese rolled into balls) helps too and every few minutes very slowly slide your hand closer to her and give her one. The biggest trick in this working is that it must be ONLY you and the dog. No one else can be around. It will build bonds between you.
Also yoga pose, Balasana (child's pose), except have your hands covering the top of your head, this is a playful pose for dogs. And most dogs will immediately begin nosing your ears and licking you.

A friend rescues Scotty dogs (brains not working after only 2 hours sleep so cant think what the proper name is!) and took one in recently. EVERY night at 11pm (pub closing time) it yelps and runs behind the sofa shaking and crying - quite obviously the previous owner would come home from the pub at that time and beat it :(

Our Cockapoo Max, Ace's brother from another litter (2 years apart) was rescued by us from a man who should never have got himself a puppy at all.
He used to lock Max in a dog carrier, not a kennel, a carrier all day while he was at work, because he didn't want to deal with puppy accidents on the floor.
Max grew up with that "beaten puppy syndrome" even though we have done nothing but love him to bits.
Max is super clutchy, loves to be rocked in Dorothy's or my arms while we gently sing little lullaby songs to him.
We got 2 puppies from those parents already, so adding Max made sense to us, and we gladly took him in.
The trio are all adults now, and I wouldn't change a thing.

wow, it sure sounds like you've got your hands full with that dog! believe me, i know what it's like, we've got a dutch shepherd, bolt, oh my, she is the most frustrating dog in the world. she catches rats all the time, tries to climb trees, manages to jump over the fence and get to the neighbours (who aren't helping because they tease her and toss food over the fence) and at the cottage she thinks the garden around moms pond is the perfect place to roll around and she eats all the blossoms off the flowers, then washes that down with water lilies from the pond and some fish, she also ate every frog she could find this summer.
from what I understand you've got a nice big property so the new doggy will still get plenty of outside time which will be good, maybe over time he'll calm down a tad.
I remember a couple years ago there was a tarp covering something in the neighbours yard (the fence was just chainlink at the time so we could see) and we kept hearing these strange sounds, it was the middle of winter and one day the tarp blew up a bit with the wind, what did we see? a husky locked in a crate with no water or food. we called around and the spca came out and took the dog away.

I know you're super busy with all the animals you have, and taking care of your family... but I've worked with "prey-driven" "hyperactive" dogs (including terriers) and I've successfully turned them into calmer dogs that come when called (even while chasing something) by using a combination of clicker training and dog psychology. If you have a bit of extra time to work with your terrier you could easily make him a more enjoyable dog to have (one you can take on those wood walks with the rest of your dogs). :)

JRT's are bred to "go to ground". The name terrier is derived from 'terra' or 'earth'. They are hunting dogs by nature.
My JRT (who now lives with my parents) doesn't seem to know this. She is completely claustrophobic, lazy, submissive and nervous at times. She does NOT act like a purebred JRT! She's hilarious...
