We all hear alot of funny advice and stories about reptiles from mis-informed people or simply the un-informed lol. I thought it would be good to share some of the funny/wierd questions or remarks we get after seeing a similer thread on another forum.
I was buying lunch in work on thursday and was chatting to the guy in a cafe about my snakes.. after being asked if they have teeth, multiple times, i was then informed that its very careless of the government to allow "poisenous" boa's to be sold with no licence:confused: ....
And countless times ive heard
"it will only grow to the size of its enclosure"

"Snakes will sting you with their tongue"

And after sitting in my flat watching my snakes wonder around their vivs my friend asks " so they are real snakes then" lmao...

And of course almost everyone who doesnt own a snake has "a friend of a friend of a friend that i swear to god got sized up for dinner when their burm lay straight next to them"

Anyway feel free to share your amusing moments people :)

I heard this one while at Petco the other day
"you have to use heat rocks because heating pads overheat and burn your snake" That was a worker giving advice to someone just buying a corn. She also said "pine is one of the best beddings" I had to step in and warn the poor lady she would lose her snake if she took that woman's advice.

Unfortunately thats a common occurance in alot of pet shops..
Ive also had sooo many people try to tell me my corn would be big enough full grown to eat a baby. So if i started a family they'd all have to go...... yeh ok :wacky:

Gotta love people who think they know what they are talking about. I got some horrible advice when I got my iguana too like "as they get older you have to feed them mice"

I had a friend say his iguana died from over feeding and I found out he was feeding at least a mouse a day. I've read multiple places that its way to much protein for them and told him that. He didn't believe me and killed another iguana from it. Some people don't deserve reptiles they think because its a $20 animal its just an expendable pet.

I sold a tiger (retic) to a woman a few years back, she called me a few months later saying it was losing weight and had never eaten in her care... After talking with her for a while I asked about what she had been trying to feed the animal, she smiled and told me "All of my animals are vegetarians" She had tried feeding it loads of mixed veggies and fruit.

Did you not teach her Basic care before purchasing?

I talked to her husband for about an hour, then gave them a paper with husbandry requirements, my phone number, and the name of the local herp vet.

It all comes down to how they want to care for the animal though unfortunately some people just want to do whats convenient for them and its heart breaking for the snake. I gave the lady at Petco buying a snake the url to this site in case she needed help. This site has helped me so much in just the short time I've been on here. If only more people had the will to just read and learn what it takes to care for these animals.

We each have a responsability to provide what each of our animals needs, not what is just easier for us. So keeping to the topic, any more stories or quotes lol? :D

If you feed a Burmese python only once every two month it will never get bigger than it's cage.

Had a lady selling a Burmese tell my buddy that one. Need less to say he did buy one from her. They were two years old and only 3 feet long.

I always get told "I'm not bringing my pets over, yours will eat mine" I always respond with "I have cats and dogs, and smaller pets and they are alive, any dangerous animal I own is caged and locked" To this day no one has excepted that as a response.

Dear lord, kids are precious!!!!

When I told my mamma I was getting a snake, she asked how big it would get. When I told her about 4', her eyes bugged out and she almost yelped "that's huge!!" ) I decided not to tell her about retics!!....yet!)

As for the feeding rodents to iguana's thing, the only field I have ever heard that being common in is those who raise iggy's for meat. They "protien-load" the babies for fast growth and good fat deposits. If you want your iggy to live a good long life, you need to give veggie based protiens. Many people will say "they eat animal/insect based protien in the wild" yes, maybe they do, but just like in any other area of animal care, well cared for domestic animals live much longer than thier wild counterparts BECAUSE of the controlled care they recieve in captivity. (ie: wild dogs lifespans are about 6-8 yrs. Our last husky cross lived to be 16, with a life-long SERIOUS medical condition!!)

When I bought my first snake...way back when..my grandma told me she was praying for my soul,...for the "devil to leave my house". ROFLMAO!!!

I've also heard these ones all too frequently:

"Snakes are slimey!"
"They're evil and they will chase you!"
"Snakes will attack you with no warning!"

My son said the best thing the other day. We where at the park and a few of us took our kids over near a pond to see if we could see any animals. First thing we saw was a snake. people scattered. I grabbed the Garter snake to show everyone that it was harmless. A man in his 30's said the snake could kill me and I should put it down. My son (Owen 5yrs old) turned around and said " are you kidding me? Its a baby and harmless. You should come see my Dad's Ball python,my corn snake and my mommy's GTP. oh and If you think snakes are scary I feel bad for you." I just sat there for a minute laughing then we told them a little about the snakes and how they where good to have around. I even got the guy to hold it and he thought it felt cool.
