A Quick Question

Hello, I plan on purchasing an IJ Jag from a local breeder, he is currently fairly small. I have read and done the research I need to successfully keep a carpet python and understand the husbandry.

My questions are more of how to heat an enclosure and tank size. Would it be better to use a lamp to provide a basking spot on a perch in the day, and a UTH for night time temperature?

And would it be better the setup a large enclosure for him to grow into or start him in a smaller setup for less stress?

I personally like to start off with a smaller enclosure and move them into larger ones as they grow. The smaller enclosure causes less stress and is easier to heat and keep the proper humidity.

how old is the carpet ?

i use tubs and heat mats at first

as long as your new carpets not a nervous feeder i would put it in a larger tank

i have put hatchlings straight into 4x2x2ft vivariums with no problems

as long as there are plenty hides branches and fake plants to make them feel secure

i have found carpets appreciate the larger space

if your new carpets a nervous feeder i would stick to a smaller tub

i keep all my adult carpets in 4x2x2ft viv's with ceramic set ups for heat

only my diamonds are kept different as they have other husbandry requirements

I am not to sure the age, i will ask next time i head over to the shop, but he is quite small.

So you mean i should a ceramic heat emmiter? Would i set that up like any other basking lamp? i have never used one before.

over here its just a ceramic non light emmiting bulb,the bulb holder and bulb guard

the above connected to a thermostat will heat a tank 24/7

it will give you a basking spot and great ambient air temperatures

i use wooden glass doored vivariums for my lot

Also, for hides, i understand carpets are semi-arboreal, so providing a perch would be ideal, but should i try to create a hide above the ground and on the ground? Or will be he fine just with a display style perch?

Dang Shaun, you have a super nice setup. Did you build those yourself? I'm hoping to build something like that within the next year for my guys.

Cracking wall of snakes mate....

I run the exact set up as well (though not as much and as impressive) CHE behind guard controlled by analouge thermostats...
