So after coming home from the reptile expo this weekend, I found this:

Here's a view from the side:

I am already planning on going to the vet, but would greatly appreciate any advice on things I can do to treat this at home and/or how to prevent this in the future.

You can put 1% silver sulfadiazine cream on any external wounds. Posting a few pictures of his enclosure would help us to help you determine what needs to be done so this will not happen again.

I don't have any pictures on hand of what his enclosure looks like, but he's in a sterilite tub with holes drilled into the top for ventilation and he's on Red Rosin paper substrate with boxes for hides plus lots of fake leaves for ground cover.

Possibly the holes are to large and he can rub his nose on them. Seal off the current holes with tape and drill smaller holes. Sand the inside of the hole to make sure they are not too rough. Without actually seeing the enclosure, this is only a guess. Also the enclosure may be to small and he is rubbing his nose trying to escape.

They flare towards the outside, but my husband sanded all the holes down last night until they were smooth to the touch. We can also plan on getting him a larger tub this week. Thanks for all the responses!

How big is he and how big is the tub?

He's just over 3 1/2 feet, and the tub floor is one length plus one width = 3 feet. So we had already been kinda thinking the tub wasn't big enough. He'll be getting a new one tonight!

I found this site last week and plan on getting some of the VE series. The are as big as my 4x2x1 Boaphiles cages.

What i like is the price. $50.00 for a tub that sizes beat the hell out of $200.00 or more for a new 4x2x1 cage.

very true! That's why I had been holding off on Boaphiles, that's what I had been originally planning on, but this is a great solution all around.
