I just picked up my first lizard, A sub-adult Bearded Dragon. I bought him with everything for $50 off some people I know. It seems like he wasn't very well taken care of. The tank is dirty and other things. So once I clean up the tank I'll get some pictures up for you guys!

This is frustrating. They previous owners clearly didn't take care of him D:< Looks like this is gonna be a rehab job. Offering him some fresh veggies hopefully he will eat some. It doesn't look like the owner gave him veggies.

When I had a beardie, besides feeding cleaning was easy. Spot clean when needed and do a full cleaning every 6-8 months.

Yeah but his tank is filthy it's gonna take a lil while for me to clean it.

Here's some pics of him. He's eating some cucumbers and green beans I chopped up for him. Anyone have any names? They named him Larry which I'm not too fond of :P

many adoptions or rescues are like that. neither of my dumerils (both free from cl with setup) were kept in SUPER bad conditions, but they definetly weren't right. when i got my 5 1/2 foot male dum, the guy had him in a 40 gallon glass tank with 1 hide, a UTH with no rheostat, and a bulb with no thermostat. the guy wondered why he didn't go on the hot side lol.... pretty much the same with my female dumerils. the guy gave me the glass tank that had a CHE on it with no rheostat. when i got everything home and plugged in the CHE, i checked the temps with a digital thermometer like 15 minutes after and it was already skyrocketing to shockingly high temps. i pulled that bulb, put in a lower wattage red bulb and covered 2/3 of the screen with tape on both sides.

it's shocking to me that people would get these animals as pets and not bother to learn what conditions they actually thrive in.

Yeah same here. Like it takes a good 10 minutes to skim through an online caresheet but people don't do it for some reason.

He really doesn't look to bad, i've seen a lot worse, missing limbs/tails, visible hips and ribs, sunken in eyes and bents limbs, they can take a lot. What do you have for UVB?

He isn't visibly bad and it's probably not as bad as I'm making it sound like but It's just annoying that they didn't have him in proper conditions. I just have the light they gave me which is a Exo-Terra Solar Glo. Temps are good as of now.

I would suggest collard or mustard greens with just about any kind of squash for veggies. He doesn't look bad at all either. Very cute little guy. And to me his name is cute for a dragon.

Yeah I just got a lot of kale cause my brother works at a farm. Were gonna give him squash and things and crickets. I already love him so much.

Kale isn't something you should feed everyday it can cause problems and even inhibit your dragons.absorption of calcium.

Oh okay I'll get something else. Conflicting data from sources. Do you know how often can I feed kale.

I have fed kale to my beardies often and not had issues. Like anything, variety is always best. Be sure to switch up and rotate veggies so that he gets the most out of his feeding and you will be fine.
He looks pretty good to me. A lot of beardies won't even touch greens when they are that age. Be sure to grab a 10.0 UVB bulb when you are out and a nice basking bulb.
Do you know if it a boy or a girl?
Congratulations :)

If you can get a reptiSUN 10.0 tube bulb that is honestly the best bulb, I can buy ReptiGLO and other nonsense at my pet store but I shell out 60 bucks to get the reptiSUN in it is actually that great. Also if you want a good nutrition sheet (pretty sure I linked it earlier but will again) this is the best : Nutrition Content (http://www.beautifuldragons.com/Nutrition.html)
