Move it away from your other reptiles, chances are they all have it though.
Nix is the best in my opinion, kills mites quickly and it won't harm your herps.

Most pet places. I got a BIG bottle at an expo and it has lasted me years. (I use it once every few months when I clean cages completely)

Okay, thanks, ill see if either of the pest stores in town has it, if not, what is another brand to go with?

You can get Nix from most stores like Wal-Mart and Target since it is primarily used for lice. You could probably get it cheaper at one of those stores as well.

Nix is cheap and from what I've seen does a pretty solid job, stick with it. Most of the pet store sold crap is a waste of money.

I've heard that provent-a-mite works well also. I recently saw two little black spots moving on my older columbian rainbow so I'm going to treat all my cages with provent a mite and see how that works before putting any chemicals on my snakes. Guess it's lucky I have a touch of OCD and clean my cages out completely and very thoroughly every 7 days. I throw out all the substrate, everything, so the mites haven't been able to really get bad.

That increase in traffic in their enclosure can't be great for their stress though.
I completely clean out a tank every 6+ months and spot clean whenever needed

What I do to help with that is I feed them in a seperate container, so I put them in their feeding tubs and while they are eating, the hubby, daughter and I clean the tanks. Then when they are done eating they chill in the feeding tanks till we are done and I have made sure everything has aired out completely and is put back together. Then they go back in and I also spot clean during the week if they go to the bathroom before next cleaning day. They eat every week right now so it works perfectly for me.

Also, how do i go about using it? lol, do i just clean out the cage, and wipe it down... or do i use a paper towel and rub some on the snake?

Other people may do it differently but I just put the whole bottle into a gallon of water and that was my mix. I keep it in a gallon jug and just fill my little spray bottle as needed. Its gonna last me a long time. Hope this helps and I hope you get rid of the mites soon.

Theres no point in moving your cal king out of the room. You need to treat all your animals because they all most likely are suffering or will soon suffer from a mite infestation. If you want to permanently eradicate the infestation then you now need to treat every animal you own.

I have never used Nix and will always recommend Provent-A-Mite(PAM) over it because PAM was developed for this exact purpose. Follow the directions on the bottle and battling mites has never been easier. I'm not trying to debate whats better, apparently Nix is effective but research both options before you choose a treatment.

I dont see how weekly cleaning would be a problem... Ill completely clean cages whenever I see any urine, feces or spilled water bowls. Spot cleaning and bi-annual cage cleaning sounds quite dirty to me...

Thank goodness cause with the humidity levels my guys need, I feel like mold/mildew could be an issue if I didn't clean once a week. I keep the stress down like I said by only doing it when they are out eating anyway.

Okay, so Target didn't have nix, they had the generic stuff... they said it was the same ingredients.. and the pet stores did not have Pam, but some other stuff they had. What should I do??

ladyjustice33
08-16-11, 03:31 PM
Well, my daughter had head lice before and I used the generic, but there were two generics, one that was a generic for Nix, and one for Rid. Different ingredients. I would get online and see what the ingredients for Nix are and compare to the generic before using it. Frankly, I'm not using any of it cause that stuff really irritated my daughter's scalp and I followed directions exactly. I'd be worried about irritation to my snakes. I went online and ordered the prevent-a-mite.

That is what I night do. View said the generic for nix had the same exact ingredients. The had rid too but she said that is different from nix...

How to NIX (Snake Mite Treatment) Part 1 - YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oqziwNaosQM)

The guy gets on my nerves, but he pretty much details 100% down the line how to Nix your animals and enclosures. It does work using his technique.

Follow these steps, you do not have to use a pesticide sprayer, I use spray bottles, but this method works.

Mix nix with a gallon of water, then add to a spray bottle make sure you remove the water dish and all decoration. Soak all the deco in hot water with nix. Keep your sanke in the enclosure. And discard all substrate, put down some paper towel. Now spray the nix treTment on your snake and all over the tAnk outside and around it as well replace the water dish in 24 hours. Do a quick mist of the nix evey other day for a week

But I think prevent a mite would be the way to go with just a few reptiles.

Yeah, the nix solution is good for treating a butt-ton of reptiles/enclosures. PAM is a lot less messy and easier to handle. I still have 1.5 gallons left of the Nix solution.

I will be set if there is ever a lice infestation at my kid's school. Just hose down all those little beasts!
