Hi there,
I have a pastel het pied female ball python that is 745 grams. I also have a male pastel het pied male that is 500 grams. I am running out of room and trying to get some new enclosures set up so I put the male in with the female, figuring that it is the middle of summer, and she is way too small to breed so didn't think it would be a problem. I went to pick up the male to feed him and low and behold he is locked with her! I didn't think she could breed at such a small weight and I am very concerned about her health and what this will do to her. Will she lay eggs? If so is this going to be detrimental to her health? Why would she lock with him if she isn't big enough to have babies? Please, if anybody has any insight please let me know. Thanks so much.

I don't have bp's, but in general, the snakes wouldn't be breeding if they weren't ready.

Regardless if she's 'ready' to breed or not there's a good chance she'll die if she does develop the eggs.

Is there anything he can do? Shes what 750 grams short of the 1500 gram minimum (i think thats what it is)

You could try being a little nicer you know every post Ive seen you make has been either mean or uncalled for Imo. Yes its something he shouldnt have done but it was obviously an accident and as much as I know It could and should have been avoided you shouldn't rip on him, his snake might die pretty sure thats lesson enough without you rubbing his face in It.

I screwed up once with one of my dogs and she got tied up with a dog when I did not want to breed her at all. It was stupid and irresponsible and I learned from the mistake. Luckily for me, I just took her straight to my vet and she gave her a shot to prevent the pregnancy. Don't know if there is anything like that for snakes or not.

Like I said, I don't keep BP's, but I've yet to lose a snake from breeding 'too early'.
Is this a common problem with BP's? I can't imagine that this trait would carry on if it resulted in death for the female

Well its not like she could run away and if they are anything like bearded dragons, males reach sexual maturity much earlier then females and will breed females even if they arent.

Hey I don't appreciate the hatefulness but I do understand being frustrated with irresponsible people. I truly thought there was no way this would happen as nobody as been cooled, every body is still eating and this is a temporary thing, literally only a few days! I'm sorry if I offended anybody, I am not trying to be irresponsible, just trying to expand room for these guys and know better than to put two fellas together! I'm truly shocked that he is trying to breed right now, it is middle of summer and it is hot as heck, their temps are regular, seriously no cooling at all. I will be devastated if I lose her, especially at my own doing but will do everything in power to ensure she is taken care of. Has anybody ever heard of this happening, a female bp at such a low weight? Safe weight is twice this for sure! Again any thoughts or insights appreciated, although try to keep the hatefulness to a minimum please, I am only human and am doing to best I can to make sure these guys are more than adequately taken care of and had a huge error in judgement, not on purpose. Thanks again.

Hey sorry if I came off rude, I know you didnt mean it and I'm sorry it happened, I'm not sure on what you can do as I dont know the finer points of breeding balls. Also just ignore that other guy he has been harrassing people a lot from what I've read. I really hope someone can help you and your girl. I've seen a lot of people throw animals together, knowing better and I feel those are the people who deserve remarks. It was an accident you'll learn from it, even though its a terrible thing to happen.

if she does get eggbound i BELIEVE the vet can go into the belly with a syringe and makes the eggs smaller so they can be passed without killing said snake.

She most likely will not become gravid but if by very slim chance she does then she will lay small eggs or possibly slug out.
...but I dont think you have much to worry about.

Just hope what Julian said comes true. She may not actually "take" but there's still a chance. Just feed her on a very regular basis in case she does.
For the people who think I'm too rude I just say I'm not here to sugar coat things because someone made a mistake that was 100% preventable.

Let he who hath not sinned cast the first stone...
Lighten up you guys, Aaron wasnt rude at all here and simply answered your question. Your exact question was "Will she lay eggs? Will this be detrimental to her health?" To which Aaron's only response was that she may develop eggs and if so it could result in death. Both are true. How was that rude? Just because you dont like the answer doesnt mean it was rude. He didnt chide you for it in any way, he didnt call you out, he didnt even say you shouldnt have done it. All he did was answer the exact questions you asked. Sometimes we arent careful and this stuff happens, but that has nothing to do with Aaron's straightforward answer to your question in this thread.

It appears as though a new member has pulled up an old post. No harm, no foul, lets not get out panties in a bunch. Keep the family strong :)

Hence why I posted bb. I realty didn't think it was necessary to have a great big long debate on it. Also I do find it sad when people ask questions then take off. How can we help when that is happening.
Oops, ya shouldve checked before I shot my mouth off. Darn, there's a lesson there somewhere I bet ;)

Maybe we can figure something out with Wayne in regards to putting some type of closure on older threads that are inactive. Make it so they can still be read but if a continuation of the discussion is wanted by a new member, they can start a new thread in regards.
Not sure if Wayne would want to do that though. It is throwing more work on his plate and we all know he has his hands full with what the regular members supply him with already :)

Pffft! Yeah right! I don't see anyone out of line here but we seem to be a little cranky and testy lately ( could be I am the only one) and just wanted to diffuse it before we all went for the kill! ;)
