View Full Version : What to do with my beloved collection?

As some of you may remember, I lost my job about a month ago. Because of this, I have been unable to pay rent and need to move back home :( That means no snakes! I've been growing my collection up to my six wonderful snakes and now I seemingly need to get rid of them. It really sucks because i'll only be living at home for about 6 months tops. It seems so drastic to get rid of my herps for 6 months, get my own place, and have to start building collection all over again. This has led me to research storage units in hopes they can accomodate snakes. I was also considering working volunteer for a humane society in exchange for housing my pets for a while. I was just wondering if anybody had any other suggestions. It'd really kill me to disperse my collection, for they are the main source of happiness in my life! What do you guys think!?

You don't have a friend that can take them for you? This way you can relax knowing that they are all in good hands, visit them and you can get them back once you are on your feet again. I would never want to see a friend loose their pet....

Ive been asking around, but it seems most of my friends are actually not very fond of snakes! (can't understand it myself lol) And the couple I have that do enjoy snakes also live with reptile hating parents. I'm so bummed :( My life's really took a downward turn lately, and my snakes are like my tool to balance my mind and stay grounded. I really really hope I can work something out.

P.S. If anyone on here would be willing, i'd drive a long, LONG way to keep my collection. Also would pay for food heating expenses upon pick up. PM me!

I am in albany. We are in the middle of a move and my fiance just lost her job the other day. HOWEVER, we are okay . My job is stable and we have and will always have time for our pets. I'll talk to the soon-to-be Mrs. and see if she agrees to making time for yours as well. How much time do you have? Shoot me a pm or email at kingxeyesore@gmail.com. Hopefully I can help. Life has sucked so much lately it would do us some good to help someone in a bind. No promises. She is better with money math ha. Email would be better as we dont have internet now so im using my phone. Still check here once a day though.

WOOOOHOOOOOOOOO. I talked to my friend Jerry, the guy I do snake shows with, and he agreed to house my whole collection for a few months :) :) :) :) I didn't ask originally because I knew he was going through some tough financial times as well, his wife just lost her job, and didn't want to burden him. However with my options running out, I asked him and he said YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! He lives close by and we do shows together so I still will get to interact with my snakeys! :) Thanks again everybody for your support and interest in helping, specifically coffee and gungirl. I love this forum! Sorry for all the exclamations and smileys but i am insanely happy. With all the stress of moving i've been dealing with, this morale boost was MUCH needed. Now just two kittys and a hedgehog left to rehome. Oh yeah, one more thing...WOOOHOOOOOOO :p

PS. Stephan, i fixed my signature just for you<3

Congrats on getting it all worked out. I know how bad it sucks to lose your collection. I lost mine twice. Years ago got a boa that turned out had IBD and it wiped out my collection. Then about a couple years later while out of town some one broke in and stole all my snakes. I believe it was the guy i got my first Yellow anaconda from. But could never prove it.

Anyway glad to hear it all worked out.

You live anywhere around where all the pythons are turning up? I love watching the venom team and some of the other shows that are filmed in Florida. One of the last episodes I watched one of the guys on the venom team found a Tawainese Beauty snake and said he was going to add it to his collection. Lucky guy, wish I could just "find" a beauty like that!!

Do not get rid of them!!! lol I was stuck in the same situation with my three snakes and almost got rid of them. Go to your local animal shelter or humane society and ask to do volunteer work in exchange for them housing your reptiles for the time being. I did this and everything worked out, so im sure it could for you as well

Yay, I'm glad you found someone to snakesit for you. I was just about to pm and offer my help if you needed it. Where there's a will, there's a way. I don't know what I'd do if I had to face giving up my snakes... I'm glad your friend came through for you. Best of luck in getting everything sorted out and finding a new job. I'll keep you in my thoughts and prayers.

Friends, ask at local herp shops, plenty of places will help you out if given the chance. If anything, rent a temp controled storage unit and keep them there, should be fine if you're careful.

Thanks everyone for your kind words and help offers. Dehlida I was seriously considering the storage unit thing, and would have done that if no one could take them. Thankfully my friend keeps about 100 snakes and I can rest easily knowing they are in his care.
