Okay, I'm totally in love with my little columbian rainbow.....love the subtle coloration and his curious personality. My reptile guy just told me he may be getting a little argentine rainbow in. Very pretty snake also, I was looking online. Anyone on here have experience with both columbian and argentine rainbows? Are they very similiar in temperment? I know if I get the argentine, I will eventually get a brazilian too, lol!!! Someone had on here that snakes are like potato chips, you can't have just one.....man were they right!!!

it's really hard to stop buying snakes lol. probably a big reason most of the seasoned reptile owners have SO many.

I don't even have my first snake yet I'll be getting a BRB in less than a week and I'm already thinking about what i want next lol. I think it's just reptiles in general though. I already have an iguana my girlfriend is in the process of getting a bearded dragon and then a snake hahah

They are truly gorgeous snakes. I hope to own one sometime in the future as well. You should throw some pictures up so we can see her/him??

I had a male Argentinian Rainbow Boa. They are fantastic snakes. They don't get quite as big as Brazilians/Colombians, and they are easier to care for since they don't require the high humidity and they can tolerate lower temps. I only sold him because I wanted to get a pair of Jamaican boas, and also the person to whom I sold him has a female, so we are hoping they will breed. Here are a few pics of mine:

Very pretty. Brazilians seem to get all the glory, but the other mainland rainbows are fantastic snakes in their own right. Very under-rated, imo.
Good luck, keep us posted on the Argentinian. Don't see them too often for some reason.

Well I've gone and done it now.......my reptile guy called me and had a good looking baby columbian rainbow boa female in. I went and took a look at her and she is a beauty so of course I had to have her, lol !!! Her name is Niobe and now I have Morpheus and Niobe!!! Of course I will be very careful with them and have no intentions of breeding them at this time. I would have to do a lot a research and make sure they were ready and I was ready before attemping anything like that. I've got some pics and have one question...
Do you notice she doesn't have the iridescence showing in the pics like he does. I'm assuming it's because she is so small and her tiny little scales aren't reflecting the light as much. Anyone familier with rainbows have an opinion on that?

Kat, iridescence is all about the lighting. You want light coming in at an angle, which is why outside pictures are often best in the early morning or late afternoon. Even then, sometimes it shows more than others. I'm sure it will come through in later pictures, no need to worry. She looks great even without, by the way -- congrats!!!

He's doing well in his new home, but he disappointed me a little. He had no interest in getting to know his new girlfriend. But he's still young yet, maybe he's a late bloomer. :bouncy:
Thanks for asking!

Thank you! I took her out yesterday for a minute and held her in the same spot and could see a little irridescence on her coils. I upped her humidity to about 80% also and she looks better now than she did that day. I love my reptile guy, but I don't think he keeps the humidity up enough for the rainbows.

Uh-oh, now you've done it.... ;-) (J/K, Ed takes amazing pictures.)
Mendoza is what, two years old now Ed? That's still pretty young. I wouldn't worry until he shows no interested at 3.5 or older. Even then, it could be the female.
Kat, you are welcome! You are correct that many people have trouble with humidity. It can be a real challenge for some, especially those not familar with rainbows.

Very beautiful!!!! The pattern and colors are fantastic.......my husband is going to love the look of this snake too. He's been looking at different boas. These don't get as large as the redtails from what I've read???

Thanks Cliff. Actually, Mendoza is a little over three years old now. (They grow so fast... sniffle, sniffle.) I'm not really worried, just busting his chops. But I do hope he doesn't turn out to be female. I'll have to ask the new owner if she sexed him, 'cause I never did, I just took the breeder's word for it.

Thank you. Just to let you know, Jamaicans are endangered, so it will be tough to get one unless you live in the same state as the seller. I'm a big fan of the insular rainbow boas, so if you have any questions about other insulars, just let me know.
Regarding size, depends what you mean by "redtails." They Jamaicans won't get as big/thick as Boa constrictor constrictor, no. They should get to be around 6' to 8' long from what I've been told.
Thanks again,
Ed

Peruvian Rainbow have the best colors as adults. Around two years of age the turn a deep red or orange with very bold markings. They hold their color much better than BRB.
BTW beautiful snakes you all have.

I've actually seen oustanding individuals in both the Brazilian subspecies and the Peruvian locale. Overall, I think Brazilians are little more spectacular, both because they have a greater range of color (Peruvians, in my experience, tend more red) and because of the more subtle markings. But both are great snakes!

Let's face it you just can go wrong with Rainbows know matter what kind you get. They are very addictive just like Carpet pythons. To me Rainbow are the Boa answer to Carpets. You have such a varied of color and patterns.:)
