Ball pythons have a rep for being very finicky feeders for good reason. I was wondering if anyone here has come across a few tough carpets to feed, or if someone has reason to believe they are truly a more reliable feeder than a ball python.
The type of carpet I'm most intersted in is Irian Jaya, however I may go with a jungle...
EDIT: wrong forum! my mistake, I'm going to post this with carpet talk...

Carpets are great eaters for the most part. Trading in your BP for a carpet?

Out of my BP and my JCP the JCP strikes more readily and is a more aggressive feeder. My BP has eaten at every feed except for 12 weeks over winter.

oh thats 2 bad your in the states, i would have sold you a IJ 100% het granite male i dont need for cheep lol either choice you said, you cant go wrong, you cant go wrong with any carpet to be honest lol, my dad has 6 ball pythons up in the snake room, and they are finicky in a way, some need to be placed alone and left in the dark to eat, one only eats at night, so he just does all feeding that way, but now with a little effort they all eat every time with out fail, some will eat 2, sometime they dont but they always eat. somthing to consider before you give up on your ball python.
Of all the carpets that are great eaters, how are they to handle. Just interested to know!

Carpets are generally active, and they can be biters but are generally ok. When they bite... they don't miss.

My coastal is an amazing feeder. She stays in food mode for two days though. I had a pair of jcp's a few years ago that were also amazing feeders but were a bit tough to switch to rats. Great being handled but all of the carpets I have had exhibit that weezing or "chuffing" while being handled. It stops as soon as I put them back though. I try to only handle once every 10 days or so. The less my coastal is handled the more she comes out to explore.

We had a clutch of 11 Carpets this year. Every single one of them besides one, took f/t mouse pinkies and than f/t rat pinkies fresh from the egg. No live, no forcefeeding, no problems. Carpets are awesome eaters!

Thanks for all the input! It seems like a carpet would be a good pet for me because it's less likely to stress ME out with having to wonder why it may not be eating, and they seem like they can be rewarding to see one grow and tame it!
14 carpets here with more coming. All but one eat every time food is offered.
The biggest problem I have is 2 juveniles that were started on mice that absolutely refuse rats. If you do get a carpet switch it to F/T rats as soon as possible. Otherwise you'll end up with a 6 to 7 foot adult that can easily eat 4 or 5 mice at a sitting.
I'd like to know more about that het granite male. Definitely an addiction.

I have 5 carpets and they are all eating machines. And they're very easy to handle.

Id like to add my two cents......
Ive been hearing from a couple people here where I live that carpets can be hard to handle, they are hard eaters when young and bitey....
2 of the carpets I own were "force feeders" from the people I got them from, both of them eat just fine for me, and I feed them F/T off tongs......
Also none of my carpets have bit me yet, though 2 of them were supposed biters.
I think alot of it has to do with how comfortable the snakes feel in their homes, and how you are with them. I dont really have a method for how I am to give to others, I just respect the snakes and try to make them happy and they seem to return the gratitude in the form of eating well for me and not filling my hand with poked holes.
I really love the carpets, to date I have kept a dozen Eastern Watersnakes, garter snakes, a red tail boa, a cali king, and a ball python...
my carpets are hands down the most fun to work with , feeding / handling / etc!
Oh also, as someone else mentioned on the first page, work to get them on rat pinks as soon as you feel comfortable with the snakes size and ability to take them. Itll save you in the long run :)
