help needed, red eye croc caresheet

Hey! Did you ever find anything out? I just took a look at Reptilescanada.com and couldn't get the search to find anything for me on them. I've looked up info before, and the only thing I have trouble with is sexing! We found some German site and translated it, once, and I think we found out that if it has a yellow patch under it's chin, it's still juvenile and can't be sexed yet...but that was totally a guess from a bad translation lol

I know the males have extra pads on their back toes, and are supposed to have smaller heads than the females. They're also supposed to have a couple "different" scales on their belly, or near their cloaca.

Really though, the info is very hard to find. I wanted to get another one, because they do good in pairs...but I have no idea what sex I have!

I was looking into getting some actually not long ago but decided against it do to the shear lack of info. Also the pair question was asked on another forum i'm on and they do fine alone but can be placed in opposite sex pairs as males will fight and females have a more then likely tendency to as well.

when i show people that pic they tell me it looks like a fake lizard *lol* she (i kind of call it a she cuz her head is large) just shed a while ago, and now her yellow neck patch is bright. She was also missing a back toe when i got her, and it actually looks like it's half grown back! i knew they could do tails, but toes? well why not *lol*

I named her Dragon cuz she looks like a midevil critter :)

And Valvaren, that's why i've been waiting to try to figure out her sex for sure. I wanted a pair, since what i've read says they do best in a pair...but well, gotta figure out what she is first!

When I got her, there was one other one with her in the store. I picked her...then we went to another store! (we had driven down to San Diego for a dive trip, and decided to hit the three LLL reptile stores on the way home for fun) at the second store, they had six of them together. We sat there with the staff looking and looking at each of them trying to figure out the sexes. They were looking stuff up online too. It was ridiculous...one guy "assured" me the one in his hand was a male....he handed it to the other clerk, who then "assured" me it was female lol

I just decided to wait on a second one :)

So far her behavior is healthy, and predictable. I've only seen her eat once, when we first got her. She ate a mealworm. I have her in a ten gallon tank, cocnut husk substrate, with a wood hide, and resin hide, a lite tree root that has absorbed water, and some moss. A small ceramic water dish, and a pretty big tupperware with water. She likes to get in the tupperware once a day...usually to poop...then she drinks from the ceramic. it's really silly.
I keep it really moist in there, since supposedly they are semi-aquatic. I throw in crickets every couple days, and she hunts those. I actually throw in a bunch of mealworms too, and they crawl around the wood and she hunts those too.

At first i tried to put worms in the ceramic dish, and had the tupperware for water. She wouldn't eat the worms from the dish, and of course pooped in the water. So, i did the duel water thing and that worked out. I experimented with giving her worms, and she would only take them if i put them in, and left her alone for a few hours. I did read that they are shy about eating.

So, now i just throw food all over the place for her, and let her fill her fat little belly, and then I just clean the tank out when it's needed. I give her fresh water every day, though. It's a must. Rarely will she poop outside of it.

I did read that they have to eat every day.

She seems to enjoy the hunting.

She's very docile to hold. I pick her up and she just hangs there like a rag doll....except for those intense eyes!!!

I hold her, or let her roam around, and sometimes she'll get a burst of speed to get away, and that's when i know she's had enough and i'll put her back lol

They will do that in your hand too...holding is more cradling since i dont' want her to fall, and she is surprisingly fast when she wants to be.

She flicks her tongue out sometimes...and she looks around...it's a very intense gaze! So cute.

She's a slow eater from the few times i've seen her eat. Munch, munch, munch, while the food item almost gets away *lol*

Hmm what else? They're only supposed to get 8-10 inches, but i don't know if that's including the tail. I guess it would, right? Mine seems pretty big now. Another reason i think it's weird i can't tell her sex.

I guess it makes sense if LLL reptile got all their skinks from the same source and they all happened to be female? They were ALL the same size. The ONLY thing to tell them apart was their head size.

Anyway, I thought of putting her in a semi-aquatic tank, but she actually seems to enjoy crawling around all the wood, and under the hides, and all that. She is always dry, and even when she gets in her water dish it seems to be just to poop...so my set up is pretty easy to maintain.

She still looks a good size for the tank, so I won't switch her to a 20 gallon for a long time. In readings she won't need bigger than that, even if there are two of them.

So...that's all the info I have on a Red Eyed Crocodile Skink!

Well, that and if they are upset, or startled...the quack. *lmao*

She got a little feisty the other day and didn't want to be picked up...so she went "quack!" it was SO CUTE. I had to move her though, so I had reached for her, and she totally fussed at me, and it sounded just like a little quack. LOL little brat.

yes there is a very big lack of info on croc skinks. I assume because we just recently started keeping them so there is not to much info. I am sure that at one point they will be the "new thing" and everyone in the reptile community will have them. Good Luck!

As an update on mine, she hasn't grown too much, though she's had a shed or two. BUT she has gotten a very yellow/orange neck and tummy! There are even little color spots on her toes that have shown up. I have no idea if that is going to help me sex her one day! i just keep assuming she's a she *lol* Anyone else have any news on their care or sexing?
