i was out fishing for in a fresh waer pond and ending up catching this snake. i thought it was a snag and treated it as such, it almost broke my rod. the snake looked to be about 7 inches long had a solid white under body and a lime green top. im just trying to figure out what kind of snake this is as i fish this spot often and i just want to know what is around this pond while im out there.

He unlocked it, it looks like a slug man, not a snake. Lol. Or maybe an eal.

I still can't see it...

I hope he doesn't mind, but I uploaded it for him.

It has an eye and a dorsal fan, so I'm going to say its an eal.

Yeah it looks like an eel and not a snake

i will take yalls word for it, never heard of an eel in this pond or in this part of nc before

NennaMeerkat

Is it a man made pond or a natural pond? Do any other waters ever wash into the pond when floods happen? And have floods happened in NC around your area this year?

The broad body of the animal with a tapered tail like that is more like an eel than a snake. Is it laying on its side in that picture or on its stomach/belly?

It isn't the greatest picture but - yea- doesn't really look like a snake does it.

it is on its side, and i think its a man made pond its on camp lejeune. no other bodies of water wash over into this pond when it rains in fact this pond spends alot of it its time in a really low water state during the year. i know it has small mouth bass, perch, sunfish, mud turtles to name a few of the other animals living in the water deer and bear often drink out of the pond all year round to. it was night when i caught it, and i dont think i have ever heard of an eel being caught on base but i will have to call the game commission on base and check with them.

If it was on its side I would say eel...was it alive in that picture? Never heard of a snake laying on its side while being alive.

Hoggies do it all the time playing dead, but I'm 90% sure that its an eal

Knowledge of american animals not great but could it be some sort of leech?

stephanbakir
07-27-11, 08:04 AM
Leeches don't have a spinal ridge like that, or an eye.

Lankyrob
07-27-11, 08:09 AM
So it is DEFINATELY laid on its side?

stephanbakir
07-27-11, 08:12 AM
Can't think of anything but a flounder that has eyes on top? And the body shape is wrong for them. If it is a leeches sucker its one of the roundest ones I've ever seen, and the body is huge too!

Second thought, could it be a lamprey!?

brheel
07-27-11, 11:30 PM
it was definately on its side in the picture but it was still on the line with the hook in its mouth. but like i said the hook appeared to be a through and through (through both the top and bottom of its mouth) its definately not a lamprey or a leech there was no sucker on its mouth, i got a clear view of it before i took a picture of it. stephan if you take a look at my facebook there are two more pictures of it on there kind of hard to see but its there. the first one has a leaf on top of its head. i called the game warden on camp lejeune today and they told me that eel's are not native to the area or native to the waters on base being that the ponds on base are stocked ponds and that means they are controlled with what they have in it, so they are in shock. oh and by the way yes it was still alive in the picture, and not sure if this helps but when i cut the line because i was not sure how to handle it it just kind of laid there and playing it on the safe side i used the tip of the rod to roll it back into the pond because it would not move. i figured it was either in shock or just really pissed.

here are the other pictures i have of it, not the greatest but its all i had to work with for lighting at the time

thats a leaf on the top of it not actually part of it

Wish I could see the mouth on it.

Its an eal, look at the frilly fin at the end of the tail.
If the pond is indeed a sealed site, tell the game warden that someone had a few pets and decided to release them there.

NennaMeerkat

That is true...the tail like it is does scream eel. Snakes just don't have tails like that at all.

stephanbakir
07-28-11, 01:09 AM
Even sea snakes don't have frilly fins. It has to be an eal, or a similar animal.

Defo an eel - and most of them can travel across land so even if it is a stocked pond it could have travelled there itself rather than been dumped.

Eels are GREAT to eat and add a spicy sweet "bbq" sauce to them...yum yum. Fry em up, grill them, or eaten raw on sushi.

TeaNinja
08-08-11, 11:21 PM
if i had the chance, yes. but no...not my plate. i will definetly be eating sushi on wednesday though. there is a place about 35 minutes from me that has cheap days on wednesday and saturday where all the rolls and sashimi are cheap. i think all the tuna and eel are like 1.25$ a piece. i usually eat like 20-30$ in sushi and am VERY HAPPY lol. not to mention i usually have to get tempura and some miso. i absolutely love tempura'd sweet potato.
