I'm looking to get into venomous snakes. I've handled rattlesnakes for a couple years but before I own a hot I really want a mentor to teach me better ways to handle hooks. I am okay with hooks but I always believe I can learn more and be shown more pointers. I am also looking for a really mean aggressive large snake so that I can train my skills without dying. I wanna train for about a year with a mentor and an aggressive snake before I move on to my venomous. Anyone from oklahoma or anyone is general that can help thank you.

If you were in SC i could hook you up with one of my mentors. I like the steps your taking, I would add, a year of stick work is over the top unless your planning on keeping Aggressive Elapids off top. Get a species that rides the hook really well, with mild venom. So your gaining experience in other places other than just hook work...

I hear the Najas love crawling on the stick so you have to learn to switch hands. Can be tricky.

That Mr. Brown is one funky snake. Constantly misses the prey and tries to bite his own tail.

If you want a really good snake to learn on, get a REALLY pissy rat snake, or preferably a REALLY pissy mangrove snake, those things are 1 incredibly high energy ball of fire :P

Whats a snake thats as nasty and quick as the cobra but without the venom? I was thinking of getting a large water snake thats violent.

Get a mangrove snake. They are mildly rear fang venomous, Their bite sucks, and the venom is enough to make you avoid getting bitten, minor necrosis. They will also eat your face if you give them a chance.

I hope you mean worked with rather than "handled", venomous snakes should neveer be handled as the risks are too great, even hooking them etc presents risks to life and limb.

I am lucky in that my mentor is a well known cobra breeder so when i start my training i will be able to see these beautiful creatures close up.

Was it venomoid? If not what happened?

Got tagged on the back of the neck, long story short there is an inner lip you cant see from the outside in a few of the vision cages, not big enough for most snakes but some can get up there. I thought it was in the hide and leaned in to change the water and got tagged.
I haven't and never plan to work with venomoids, luckily it was a dry bite, the only time I have ever been injected with snake venom was a rattler, and that was messy.

I use a "twist over" method to keep them from gaining ground on me (naja) like you said 3 or 4 sticks is a must. Im good enough with a single stick and tong to handle one with out suffering a bite.. so far. I hope to get one in the future, ive dealt with many, some exceptions; haven't worked with a King for instance.

So I've looked up venomoids and found this:

Legal questions have been raised about amateur venomoid surgeries, since the Australian 1986 Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act states that animals must be anesthetized for the duration of an operation. In 2007 the Victoria state government amended the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act 1986 to ban the removal of venom glands from snakes unless performed for a therapeutic reason by a registered veterinarian. In addition, a 2008 government tribunal ruled that venomoid snakes cannot be handled by members of the public, due to the risk of the venom glands regrowing.

I'm sorta appalled at the major loop holes these laws provide. It's like stripping a dog of its teeth, or declawing a cat, or taking the tail off of a monkey... well, you get my point. The fangs and the venom is what makes these snakes what they are and anything else is cruelty.

I've hated the whole idea of venomoid since I became aware of it.

Its useful for education where the handler would be endangering his life to teach others. If done properly it isnt to any real disadvantage to an already captive snake. There are procedures set up around it.. Im not against it... but im also not for it.. if that makes sense.
