cute little guy you have there.

Thank you. I didn't take the corn, but my friend did. He'll take great care of it. It was neglected cause it was "mean". Probably just hungry! But yeah, i freakin love that retic. I heard slayers average about 10 feet top out at like 13. Any one heard anything conflicting that?

No idea of size but the patterning is just like my SD!

Is your super dwarf faded at all rob? Ive heard some are, just wondering. Word has it slayers, since they're a locale not a morph, stay more vibrant like a normal. Am i misinformed?

The slayer is the first snake that I've seen with the head bigger than the body or is that just the camera angle?
brylecc1989
07-07-11, 05:12 PM
Her head is massive! At least as wide if not a little wider then her fattest body area at this point.

Wow so here we have the opposite when it comes to feeding because we know the head can take it but how about the body? Do you only feed something that's 1.5 size her widest body point or do you feed what she can handle with her head?
brylecc1989
07-07-11, 05:42 PM
I know boids, not sure about other families, can open their mouth 180 degrees. So i believe that body size is always the issue opposed to head size. She will be more than safe eating things the size of her fattest point. Ill probably feed slightly larger than her fattest point, and she could probably take more than that if i desired(which i don't!) Can not WAIT until feeding day.

I need to ask, did you call it slayer?
If its the locale, its called Selayar.

Stephan from the pic what do u think it is? i was told "slayer"

Did he use the word slayer? could you have misheard? Or was it in writing.
Looks like it could be a selayar, what sex is it?
brylecc1989
07-07-11, 07:36 PM
it was in writing as slayer. its a female.

Alright, contact the breeder and ask, he could just have heard Selayar and thought he heard slayer.
Its a good idea to find out what going on and possibly inform him, when you get into retics is a great idea to know what you have.
brylecc1989
07-07-11, 08:23 PM
I definitely agree. Is slayer a morph and not a locale? If its a selayer it'll top out at like 15 right?
stephanbakir
07-07-11, 08:25 PM
Selayar is a locale. There is no slayer morph as far as I know. The only retic morph that has to do with killing something is "werewolf killer" bred by monster snakes.

So theres no such thing is a "slayer" retic. It is most likely selayer. Doesn't look like it on google images tho.

It looks like it might be Selayar, they don't always have the bright yellow head.

Some retic locales look simply stunning.
This Kayuadi for example

That retic you have is a looker either way, how much did you pay for him?
brylecc1989
07-07-11, 08:31 PM
Shes a female. Paid 200 and got like 150$ worth of accessories at least. Two thermostats, a 20 gallon, tons of cage furniture and two light domes.
stephanbakir
07-07-11, 08:32 PM
Thermostats or thermometers? What quality?
That 20 gallon wont last you long at all to be honest.

I have a thermostat, the exo terra 1000 watt and a thermometer. Her temp in the hot spot is 90 and the cool side 79. I read that's ok, with humidity around 60.

Basking spot 92-95
Ambient humidity 50-70% misting daily.
Ambient temp 85

Beautiful snake!! I would love to own one someday but there size is something I'm not ready to deal with....
brylecc1989
07-08-11, 01:30 PM
Thanks stephan. I've kept her basking spot at 90 thus far but will pick it up a few degrees, cause i trust you more than online care sheets. She's so beautiful. And i don't know who said retics were prone to aggression, but she is the sweetest thing. I held her for about 40 mins before putting her in while my temps stabilized and she just explored and relaxed. Not a sign of aggression or flightiness, but sooo inquisitive. I love her already!

Retics are great snakes the only aggression i see in my retics are at feeding time.
stephanbakir
07-08-11, 05:14 PM
they are dreams, have you talked to the breeder?
marionsclan
07-08-11, 06:05 PM
Ok, I need to ask, do Retics get a bad rep about striking with no reason, or are they actually calm and sweet, or should they be approached with caution because they're moody snakes?
The same question goes for Carpets.
stephanbakir
07-08-11, 06:14 PM
They are calm and sweet, but with any snake with the potential to kill/maim you you should never let your guard down, although most people do because they are so mellow. You get reminded of their power every time you feed them.
Jenn_06
07-08-11, 06:18 PM
And with retics and burms its a good idea to hook train them, my isis knows when she sees the hook its not feeding time and will sit in the back of the cage if she sees no hook she would stay in the front of the cage until i feed her.

Marion, i just got my retic but so far she is extremely docile. As for carpets, i have a coastal about a year old 4 ft long. She was a little wary of me when i first brought her home, and bluff striked a couple times, but she has never bit me. I handle her frequently and she continues to get more and more calm.

Stephan, i spoke to the man i got him from, who said his "trusted breeder" said it was a "slayer." I was looking online at breeder sites,i believe one was exoticreptiles.com, and it seems people use dwarf and slayer interchangeably. Google search slayer reticulated python and check out what im talking about. Lemme kno wat u think!
stephanbakir
07-08-11, 07:26 PM
There are only 4 people claiming the "slayer reticulated pythons" and the people I'm reading talking about them I've never heard of and don't sound like they ahve much experience/honesty.
I especially like their claims.
"So you want the look, and the attitude of a Reticulated Python but not the size…The “Slayer” is the way to go. Still can reach lengths of 11 feet and has all the same characteristics of a normal Reticulated Python including the orange eyes but not the 25 to 30 feet of that of the normals. This female has been handled often and is eating great on rat pups."
I believe they are talking about Selayars. But the fact that they came normals get 25-30 feet is HIGHLY misleading... Bob clarks Fluffy was the biggest in the WORLD at 25 feet, Medusa Twinkey and Rosie are the next 3 in line at 23-24 feet... they dont get 25-30 feet just because they are mainland/Sulawesi retics.

Is it really ok to cut the eggs open like that??? omg it looks like the way he is doing it he is going to kill them all... I don't know crap about eggs but that just looks brutal the way he is handling them.
stephanbakir
07-08-11, 11:32 PM
He is an idiot for handling the babies like that, but its not at all uncommon for people to cut eggs, I myself do it whenever I get clutches. There are times when a snake will not be able to get out and die otherwise, there are ways of doing it where it won't harm the snake.
Gungirl
07-08-11, 11:35 PM
Ok thanks Stephan. I knew you could cut them a little to help but the way he was just pulling them out made me cringe.
stephanbakir
07-08-11, 11:38 PM
The way hes doing it is... wrong in my opinion, but I never bred reptiles at the scale that he does so my word doesn't stand for much against him. You can actually cut eggs the day they are layed IF YOU ARE CAREFUL, and replace that small hole with saran wrap and watch the snake develop. It's not as simple as cutting and putting the plastic over but it isn't hard. The hard part is keeping the incubator free of any mold because with a hole it WILL kill the snake.
Gungirl
07-08-11, 11:43 PM
Oh wow.. watching it form must be incredible! I would love to do that but would be afraid of harming the snake. Seeing how I will never breed I don't really have the option but its always good to know more!!

That guy is pretty ruthless when it comes to handling snakes. I've seen a few of his videos and there was one where he showed how to pop a snake which was horrible. He couldn't get it done right the first time so he kept pushing and squeezing until the hemis came out. What a moron!
forkedtongue
07-12-11, 09:57 PM
I haven't started breeding yet but watching him do that just made me cringe....especially as small as they are and I would imagin still quite fragile and he's pulling on em just to show off colors to the f-ing camera. And the cutting seemed pretty over-zealous. Idk...
stephanbakir
07-13-11, 07:27 AM
The way hes cutting is fine. The way he handles babies may be rough in our opinion but hes got years and years more experience then us, and if it harmed them physically he probably would have stopped years ago.
Jenn_06
07-13-11, 07:47 AM
I will be cutting my eggs but its only to help them but that's as far as ill will go they have to get out them self, i think it has to be scary for a little snake to get pulled out of the egg like that.
stephanbakir
07-13-11, 07:52 AM
Its good to leave them in there so they can absorb as much yolk as they want to.
