Humidity Advice For Water Snakes?

Hi guys,
I just received my first snake from a breeder a few days ago. He's a young plumbeous water snake and sadly there is not much information online about keeping these snakes as pets. He's a few months old and seems healthy, he ate two small fish on his second day home and comes out briefly every night for a drink and lap or two around the tank. I've kept handling to a bare minimum. Overall he seems fine.

However, I'm not really sure about the humidity levels required. I'm using a coco peat substrate recommended by and received from his breeder and I was told to keep it damp. Alternatively I read online (not for plumbeous snakes per se, but generally for water snakes) to keep a dry substrate because too wet could cause water blisters. So what's the verdict? Anyone have any information that could help? (:

I keep a water snake, the care is exactly the same as a garter snake.

As long as the water bowl is big enough to swim in, your snake will be happy.

Thank you! So there's no need to keep the substrate damp? I'm using a home made screen top (strangely the tank didn't come with a fitting lid) so moisture tends to escape real quick!

Hello and welcome... why dont you try covering most of the screen top with aluminum foil or something like that to help with the humidity issue ?

Hey everyone, thanks for trying to help! I'm going to go with that first piece of advice I received from the lovely Wayne up there, in fact the only person who said that I needed to keep the snake damp was his breeder and well I guess he doesn't really know what he's talking about.

Hello and welcome... why dont you try covering most of the screen top with aluminum foil or something like that to help with the humidity issue ?

Oh, and thanks for the welcome! I don't think he needs the extra humidity, we live in the tropics and it's plenty humid around these parts as it is! If this concern does arise, though, I'll take your advice :3

It might be referring to another snake, you noted that yours had venom and that care sheet says nothing of venom.

its a general water snake care sheet, the venom that the snake in question holds is not considered to be harmful to humans so not all care sheets will mention the venom, in the same kind of way that some hoggie care sheets dont mention the venom that they hold.

Hes from Malaysia, unless the snake he owns is the kind we have native here the care sheet might not be of much help. What species of water snake is it?

Hello! Sorry I'm late! Ilovemypets is right, I own a plumbeous water snake, enhydris plumbea. And I'm more she than he to be honest XD

I've read a couple of pages saying that most water snake care can fall under the same category as garter snake care, as also pointed out by Wayne up there in the very first reply. Albeit my snake is only native to south east Asia and will not be found anywhere near you guys... And this is what makes me unsure of his care! I've mentioned that his breeder told me to keep him damp, but everyone else says to keep him dry! Very confusing indeed!
