View Full Version : Would this make a good home for a boa?

Hey, so recently i've been thinking about what im going to do when my dumerils boa grows to its full size. I was at a pet store today and seen that 'Zilla' actually makes pretty big sized tanks. Up until I seen that today, I was just under the impression that down the road I would just have to have a wooden enclosure built.
So I was wondering if it was a good idea to keep a full sized dumerils boa in the 90 gallon, (L 48" x W 24" x H 18") tank?
i included a link so you guys can get an idea of what it looks like and how big it is....and i was also wondering (if this tank is fine)....would it be ok to put my 6 month old female in it? (obviously with a lot more hides because its a larger space for her)

eh, in my opinion, a wooden enclosure would hold heat and humidity better, as well as be more secretive. also if you need to move it in a truck or something wood doesn't shatter :)
here's my 4x2x2 for my adult male. (that was when i first brought it home, i have no idea why the guy had a band-aid on it lol)

You can build a nice one your self, and cheap. This cost me 50 bucks to build.

i bought my 4x2x2 for 75$ and i didn't have to do anything lol. strangely enough i drove and bought it from Jhiggy69 a year or so back before he ever joined the forum lol.
That's also another option. There are a lot for sale in your area for cheap.

Cool...I think the wooden enclosures look nicer then glass tanks as well. Jay where would I look to find something like that in my area?

check around craigslist. you could even make a craigslist add saying you need wooden enclosures in your area and maybe someone will email you.

i like good old plastic cages, you dont have to be scared if its going to mold (if you did not seal it right)it keeps the humidity and temps where you want them. just great cages, your going to pay some money but i think its worth it.

thats true too....with wooden enclosures mold and rotting would def be something to worry about.
but in regards to the size of the zilla tank....(48" x 24" x 18") would that size enclosure be good for an adult female dumerils?

How to build 4x2 enclosure for $100 - Redtailboa.net (http://www.redtailboa.net/forums/how-tos-tutorials/28742-how-build-4x2-enclosure-100-a.html) this wont mold or rot, and will hold high humidity, i build these for my snakes. for my carpets i build them 2 feet tall. :) hope this helps

been doing a lot of looking around and most of the enclosures in the listings i've found online look beat up and "over used".....i do however love the way pvc enclosures look, they have a very professional and sharp look to them....my only concern is that i would prefer to use a heat lamp and i have yet to find one capable for use with a heat lamp.
i also figured to play is safe and go with a 6'x2' instead of a 4'x2'....just in case she gets a little bigger then expected. too much room with plenty of hides cant hurt regardless right?

A 6 footer may be a little big for your 6month dum...

yea that was 1 of my bigger concerns man....i doubt i'll be getting one any time soon. i just really wanted to get her into the enclosure she'll be in for the rest of her life now, to get the stress of a big move for her out of the way....esp before she gets older and gets too used to her surroundings

To be fair the added stress from a 12ft floor space may outway the benefit of having the move done now... Anyway good luck.
4x2 seems too small for a full grown Dumerils....
im a fan of wood as well. When i used to keep boas the 4x8 ply was a very convenient side to work with. i kept my dumerils in 8x3, which i still find small but i tend to not like smaller size). make sure you make one dimension narrow enough to get through your doors.

yea thats why i was thinking about maybe looking at a 6x2 or even a 6x4
....i wont be getting one any time soon, im just collecting ideas for now
yes that would be good, but when you are maintaining a 4' deep cage that is not high and especially when it is low or high up you might regret that deep cause its a bit difficult to get into, maybe not if your youngish.
also think this way, if your in north america wood sheets are sold in 8x4' sheets. so a 6x4 cage needs (2) 6x4 sheets and the cut offs will also do the ends (2x4' assuming thats your height) but then you are still left with the back (front will probably by some door type contraption and not use sheet wood). 6x2'....so you still need to buy a whole new sheet for that. thats 3 sheets and a 2x8' chuck left over and some scrap.
if you have the space a 8x4 (floor) would still only take 3 sheets and there would be no left over. cost is the same, waste is less (unles syou want to make more cages, that the issue is not existant) and the snake will have more stretch room which is easy for use to justify against, but we are not the ones living in that cage.
the 4x2x2 size is also a very convenient one, i like it...only uses one sheet of plywood minus the door side, so its good that way. but too small for a big ol dumeril by any stretch.

honestly i don't really agree, but to each his own. by no means do i think extra room is bad, but my adult dumerils is hiding on either end about 99% of the time, so all the ground room isn't necesary and may be harder to maintain the proper temps and such.

also valid points zak....i guess its good thing i have plenty of time to figure out and decide what im going to do. she'll be fine in her 55 gal for quite a while
thanks again everyone

also keep in mind females get bigger then males. my male is in a 4x2x2 but i might get a little bigger for my female when she grows up because they get a foot or two longer. so if yours is a female that's another reason for a big cage, but for my male the 4x2x2 is fine.
