A Few Basic Questions on getting started

Hey guys,

So i have purchased a Centeralian Carpet Pyhton. I have not yet pick him up as i need to get his cage all sorted. Basicallly he is 5 months old. For his younger years i have a small cage that will do the job for a small amount of time.

In the mean time i am decorating his larger enclosure. I would like to ask what you other owners suggest what things i should include in his cage.


What flooring is recommended?

What watt is preferred for heat lights?

Is a heated floor mat recommended?

How often would a baby feed? The breeder got it feeding on chicken and turkey! So feeding is not as expensive.

I will have a hiding rock in there but wont get one for a while so i just have toilet rolls and boxes for the time being?


Any other tips or suggestions i am happy to hear. This is my first snake. I have not collected him yet so really just trying to get everything set up n ready to go before i collect him :)

i always get my carpet pythons on to rats as soon as possible,that way as adults 1 medium or large rats every 15 to 20 days does them fine

i use old newspaper as substrate,i used to use aspen but found it too dusty.

re heat
i use 100 watt ceramic non light emmiting bulbs in my 4x2x2ft vivariums.(redink will be able to give you better guidance as he will know what the weathers like over your way,being a fellow ozzy)

bredl are great snakes to keep and i look forward to some pictures of yours once he arrives

Hey mate... Welcome.

At 5 months old just put it in a click clack, 30 ltr starmaid tub will do from Big W. A couple of dowels through the tub as a perch about a 1.5cm thick and 3cm apart. Heat half the floor with a heat cord underneath the tub controlled by a thermostat. Flooring can be paper towel or newspapers. Mate I have to say turkey is an odd thing to be feeding them.... this is a first that I've heard of were we are. What excatly does the breeder mean by chicken and turkey? Day old chicks? As shaun said... I'd be trying to switch it onto rat pups as soon as it's settled.

Did you get a care-sheet with it? The breeder doesn't sound like a pro, if he wrote it the info might be off. Can you read us the temp and humidity requirements you were given so we can assure you they are correct?

Welcome! Bredli's pythons are awesome snakes, that's a great choice. Some of your questions don't have one and only one correct answer, a lot depends on what you feel comfortable with. But for what it's worth, here's my two cents:


- What flooring is recommended?
I use paper towels. A lot of people use newspaper. It's not too aesthetically pleasing, but it's cheap and easy to clean. It all depends on how attractive and natural you want the cage to look, and how much effort you want to put into maintenance.


What watt is preferred for heat lights?
- I don't like heat lamps. Maybe for Centralians they will be okay, but many snakes that require more humidity have been slowly dried out and killed from heat lights.

Is a heated floor mat recommended?
- I use Flexwatt tape under the cage for belly heat.

How often would a baby feed? The breeder got it feeding on chicken and turkey! So feeding is not as expensive.
- Again, you'll get different answers to this. Personally, I think many snake owners over-feed their snakes. I fed my baby maybe once every 10 days or so. But I would say once a week would be fine also. The chicken and turkey thing doesn't sound good, though, especially if that's all he feeds the snake.

- You definitely need some hide spots, at least one on the warm side and one on the cool side of the cage. I would also recommend a humid hide spot (an old tupperware container with some damp paper towels in it) for times the snake wants more humidity, especially if you are using a heat lamp.

Thanks so much for getting back to me! that helps me out alot

I went out today and got everything for my cage

I have a low Watt heat lamp and heated floor mat for my heated end with a hide spot

I used Breeders Choice kitty litter for the flooring (ill see how that goes as i can always chop and change)

And i also have another hide spot at the cooler end of the cage aswell as a small water bowl.

Atm he is in a large container untill hes a bit bigger to fit the larger cage so everything should be dandy :)

The one thing im worried about is the food the breeder is feeding them

He is feeding the mice and rats aswell as the chicken at turkey so its not one ford sorce. The Parts of the chick he is feeding them in the end part of the chicken wing and even chicken neck and hearts, he said how his darwin carpets love them!

Is this mixture okay to feed? What would be the main issue if i was occasionaly feeding him chicken wings with mice?
