Hi there!

I'm new, as the introductory post implies. Currently I don't have a scaly companion; I'm in the market and I've been researching for a good three weeks now, and I'm just boggled by the variety. I'm hoping to get some tips/advice from folks with more knowledge than me. :]

Hey there, first snake=cornsnake in my opinion. Loads of different colourings to choose from and very hardy snakes and easy to look after.

Hi guys! Thanks for the welcome. :D

Corns are pretty adorable, and I've held a few. However I was under the impression that they were a bit...wriggly, even as adults. Kind of an intrepid-explorer snake. Is this true?

After narrowing your search to size, ease of husbandry, and habitat requirements, I would suggest to handle various types of snakes and then look for the temperament of the snake that best matches what you're looking for. I started out with a corn snake but found it too wiggly and slithery though very cute and interesting to watch. So, I turned to a Ball Python and find that the way she wraps around me and her smooth easy movements are a better match. I also knew that I had to stay away from aggressive snakes because I want my kids to feel and be safe around them.

Temperaments vary from snake to snake, of course, however, certain species come with inbred temperaments that causes them to stress easier, be curious, want to hide all the time, be aggressive, etc. There are always exceptions and the way you handle and take care of your snake will also affect it's temperament. So, read up about the various snakes and what temperament they have and see what feels most comfortable to you.

Good luck!

Welcome to the forum! :)

I couldn't agree more with marionsclan. My advice: Do your research, and don't ever be afraid to ask for advice. There's SO much invaluable info here and many of the member's are very knowlegeable with priceless years of experience and "snake wisdom" that they so generously allow us newbies to "tap into" when we ask the right questions - so ask away! And of course, ask questions to yourself (just not out loud..men in white coats might come after you), such as those you are already considering, "what snake suits ME best?" and "what can I honestly handle caring for easily as a beginner?" Snakes are addictive, so if you catch the addiction, this likely won't be your ONLY snake - so don't worry if it's not the "snake of your dreams", if that snake is perhaps better suited for a much more experienced hobbyist, and happens to be a snake who's care and temperment intimidate you at the moment. Better to start with a hardier, easier to care for snake, IMO, so trial and error (which often happens with beginners) is not AS dangerous to the snake if it can tolerate more flux in temp, hummidity, etc. and one who has a very docile temperment to start with will make things a lot easier for you as you begin to get used to proper handling, what kind of motions will startle them to be defensive, etc. Of course, the more research you do in preparation for the snake, the less error, which is the most important thing you should be doing right now. Please bear in mind though, this is all just my opinion, I do NOT claim to be an expert by any means.
Best of luck choosing your first snake! :)

Thank you and this is exactly the reason why I like this place so much. People don't just talk out of their arse but speak from experience and are willing to help out anytime. And don't be afraid to ask lots of question, I know I do, but nobody has gotten annoyed with them yet. At least I hope not. ;)

I will probably end up asking tons of inane minor questions about anything and everything, so hopefully I won't annoy you guys too much. :D

Nah, anything to show off what we know which in my case is very little compared to others on here. But ask away and I might learn something new too. :)
