So Adelina has been moved into the bedroom for about 3 weeks now. Since we moved her she immediately went into a shed. Had a clean shed even though it was stuck to the underside of her large water dish. After vacation a couple of weeks ago I have fed her twice with frog scented pinkies and though she won't eat outside her tank she will launch herself at the scented pinks if they are in her tank and inside a decoration. So it seems the new routine and new place in the house has gotten Adelina to calm down overall.

Here are pics of her shed that I found last week during last weeks feeding, and pics of her eating this week. Enjoy :)

The shed picture? I keep the water bowl full at all times. And it is large enough for her to soak in as well. If I wasn't away on vacation and noticed her blue or in shed I would have misted things down. I will keep it in mind for the next shedding. If I need to do things differently.

My two corns I used to have never needed any help shedding. No misting or anything other than their water dish. Figured it was the same for this hoggie.

My sister's boyfriend has a hoggie, and he offered to give it to me and I want it sooo bad but I feel like I shouldn't have too many until I'm older and out in my own house. Do they make good pets, are they easy to care for in general?

I believe that was a joke. As in the shed IS the snake.

Hoggies are my absolute favorite native species snake. They don't get overly large so a 25 gallon aquarium will generally fit you through the snake's entire life (though I may upgrade to a larger tank later on). Temps are generally easy to keep, especially if you live in a hot environment like I do. I use a UTH for one side of the tank and a normal bulb to keep a 12 hour day/night schedule. What I have noticed is that they can stress somewhat easy when they are small like my girl is, and will go off feed for it. She was off feed for about 2 months because the room we had her in was to "busy".

However they are not aggressive snakes other than a bit of hissing and head/neck flattening to try and intimidate you. They get used to being handled in general fairly easily and as I said before do not get overly large. Even as a full adult a large sized mouse is enough food (though I have heard of some people feeding them small mice).

You cannot CANNOT feed them live food because they don't constrict their prey...simply grab and swallow. Often times my little one will swallow behind first but grabs at the middle of the pinkie. They are rear fanged and mildly venomous thus they will chew on their prey a bit before swallowing.

It caught you off guard:P No worries roflllll.
Quick question regarding the hoggies, are they high energy like rat snakes or slow and mellow like bps?

I admit defeat on the dehydration joke...you got me good ;)

The adults I took care of at a zoo while in college were really mellow and would love nothing more than just to chill in your hands or lap. My little girl however is always wanting to go everywhere when you take her out. Inside her tank she will hide all day. Usually never see her out. I think with age comes more self assurances and thus mellowness.

Thanks hun. Hopefully soon, after a few more feedings in a row, I will take her out and get some full body pics. Just so worried about stressing again.

No problem Youngster :) As for care they make great first time snakes, as for their shyness and sometimes going off feed I would consider them a snake you gotta have a lot of patience and ready to stress over LOL But they are great snakes overall.

yh they are a stressful snake to own and you have to take a chance with them, it is a joy to own a hoggie though.

I just look forward to the day when she is thicker than a pencil and is less unsure of the world she lives in. Seems like anything could set her off right now.

it happens, im lucky in the fact that the hoggie that i got fed the first night i got him and he always feed when its put in his viv, i always leave it on his hide under the heat lamp which also helps to keep the mouse warm.

plus on top of that, when i go to open his viv and he notices me there, he literally goes on top of his water bowl, hangs loosely over the water, hoods up and hisses and head-but strike towards me. i love his "bad-***" attitude and it always amuses me.

Hogs are so cute to watch. How much poison do they expel when they actually bite and what kind of damage would that do?

its venom btw. as for how much they inject, the answer is not alot and the main effects of a bite are:

1.) numbness of the bitten limb;
2.) headaches;
3.) swelling;
as well as a few other minor things.

however, if your 1 of the unlucky rare people that have an allergic reaction to the toxins within the venom, then you will need to seek medical attention immediately as an anerthelactic shock could kill you without medication, 1 of which is pure adrenaline.

Venom, yes, my bad.

So, if I'm not allergic I could get through a bite without medical help?

yes, but after a first bite, get it checked, just to be absolutley sure, normal painkillers will normally suffice

Keep in mind they are rear fanged snakes so it is the kind of thing that if on the off chance they do bite you are somewhat unlikely to actually get any venom. Honestly though I don't think I have ever heard of a careful owner ever getting bitten...even by the spunkiest of hoggies. My girl will headbutt me hiss and flatten herself out. But she has yet to ever open her mouth to me.

You know it! I wouldn't change her antics for anything. She puts up a strong front but settles quickly and easily.
