View Full Version : Possible Health Problems .... PLEASE HELP!
Yah so i was cleaning my Creamsicle corn snake's cage the other day and i noticed that there was several black specks at the bottom of her water bowl , I use mulch in my cages so it could be mulch . Also she has several red dots on her stomach but that could be just her stomach .... I could just be crazy but better safe then sorry . So is there any way to tell for sure if my snake has mites? Also she got bit on the haed by a rat near her eye , it is not major but what should i do???

First thing you should do it switch her over to F/T.
Get a magnifying glass and look at the little black things to find out if they have legs etc.
If she has mites, get some Nix.

Go from life to F/K to F/T, should be fine.

Start with a live rat/mouse and kill it, then offer it on tongs wiggling it.
Once she eats one of those thaw a rat/mouse till its defrosted and at room temp, warm it a little with a blow-dryer and offer it. (all of my snakes eat food at room temp though)

re mites.....
if you squeeze the black dots you will find they will burst and look like a smear of blood
substrate however will remain in tact
cheers shaun

i've found it the easiest way to determine if its a mite
they are after all just wee beasty's that eat blood,so when you squish them they look like they were a living thing
substrate on the other hand won't squish and leave a smear on your fingers
you can also put them on a piece of white paper towel, then draw a circle round them.if you come back and they're not in the circle you will know they have moved,so therefore are alive
cheers shaun

Or you got a gust of wind and it blew that piece of substrate outside the circle :)
Break out the nix the winds coming!!
