yeah I tend to stick with aspen, I wont touch pine. I might go to bark for a good contrast against him

You could also put a background on the back and side walls for contrast when taking photographs.

yeah, wasnt my top concern at the time. most of it was to mess with my friends that are terrified of snakes. so I took the pics and put them on there facebook pages HAHAHAHAHA

That backfired, they saw how beautiful my animals were and wouldn't get out of my house lol. Then my BP ate their hamster and that ended :)

not for me, but they do admit he is pretty. but he has an attitude problem so that works to. I just take him out and let him bite me a few times. people wont get near him HAHAHAHA

Snakes can injure themselves by biting you, breaking off teeth etc.
Also, teaching him to bite isn't doing anyone any favours, please try to avoid it.

I am not teach him to bite. like I said he has an attitude problem. I have been trying to break him of it but its not working to well. so what can ya do?
stephanbakir
06-22-11, 09:36 PM
Ever thought of hook training him? It's easy, it doesn't harm the animal and it works.
jmorris7575
06-22-11, 09:41 PM
been using a hook, he is just over aggersive. not really sure why but its cool I keep him from biting me.
stephanbakir
06-22-11, 09:42 PM
There is a difference between using a hook and hook training.
Trust me its worth the time it takes to research it. I'll never go back to not doing it with any aggressive animal.

Unfortunately showing off a bitey snake to scare/initmidate people is one of the reasons that people want snakes banned form public ownership. Much more constructive to show people that snakes are not to be scared off, arent aggressive (more likely defensive bites than aggressive bites) as a rule and can be great pets for people of all ages.
Very pretty snake you got there tho.

over in the uk,a few of my fellow carpet keepers and i have found aspen tends to be a very dusty substrate and can lead to respiritory problems
i know its not for everyone but i use newspaper substrate
i liked the visual effect of aspen but as said found it too dusty to work with
thats a very nice jag you have there
who bred this guy ?
cheers shaun

I am sorry if you took it that way it was meant as a joke. I dont like scaring people. nor do I let him bite me just for kicks. is he bitey, yes but I dont go out of my way to scare people with him. I am still trying to break him of his agressive nature but he doesnt seem to want to kick it which is fine

It's not fine, learn to hook train him and really work at it. Don't give up.

Well in my experience with many snakes over the years I have dealt with aggressive snakes and I know some wont settle down. that being the case you just come to accept that it happens and deal with it and know that some snakes are going to be prettier to look at.

I've tamed down wild caught snakes in the past... its not hard. Some refuse, but thats only happened once and we could still hold it by hand, just needed to be careful. (was a W/C retic)

I apologise in that case - i didnt realise that you were joking. You are fairly new to this forum and i dont "know" your sense of humour or how you express yourself yet.
If i can offer some advice - add in a few smilies and lol's when you are joking until we get to know you and it will lessen any misunderstandings
Again my apologies

Part of hook training that i use with my SD Retic is to touch the snake lightly on the top of the head, applying minimal pressure, this "turns off" his feeding response (i then can reach in and get him by hand but you would normally then use the hook to remove from the viv).
That is the only tip i have picked up from reading on here - luckily he has a really obvious FEED mode and RELAXED mode so i can judge when i need to use the hook.
stephanbakir

Retic relaxed mode looks like a rat snake lol, REALLY active.
Retic feed mode is jaw hanging open following you intently with its face ready for food, then once food is present it FLYS at it faster then you can react and clamps down on anything it hits lol.

well stephan, you seem to know a lot about hook training how about you enlighten us on how to do it. all I have found about hook trainning is to tap them on the head with the hook to turn off the feed mode. problem is that doesnt work with my carpet I have tried many times. so any knowlegde you can give would be fantastic

Alright that coincides with what i thought and have read. I'll go with that tactic and I think i'll be trying it out tomorrow.

06-25-11, 10:17 PM
stephan is there anything else you can tell us?
stephanbakir
06-25-11, 10:20 PM
Can you be more specific?
jmorris7575
06-25-11, 10:21 PM
ummm well we have been talking about hook training there must be more to it then just tapping them on the head with a stick, so what I am asking is is what else is there
stephanbakir
06-25-11, 10:31 PM
For the most part, hook training is more about setting a routine then anything else.
Whenever you feed the animal you get the food item and toss it in the enclosure and close it asap, never involving the hook, the snake understands no head tap = maby food and the smell does the rest.
Hook training means using the hook to break the feeding response every time you want to take the snake out, work in the enclosure or anything that doesn't involve food. It doesn't take them long to figure it out.
