so i was looking at my female dumerils a few minutes ago and she had the back half of her body kind of under the substrate in the hide and her head was popping out of the substrate in front of the hide. i sad down in front of the tank and looked at her and i saw the bottom inch or so of her tail sticking straight up and she started wiggling it like crazy. she did it for a minute or two then stopped.
it kind of seemed like she was only doing it when i was sitting there and looking at her. maybe trying to fake like a rattlesnake? lol

anybody know why? O.O

i did a bit of reading and i think she is caudal luring. apparently they wiggle their tail in the air while buried to entice prey to come close so they can explode on it. too bad she has to wait a few days ;)
and it makes sense why she'd do it when she saw me outside the tank. she probably saw movement and thought about food.

I know my little hoggie wiggles her tail when she feels threatened but hoggies are known for that behavior.

Oh and of course my leopard girl Bell will wiggle her tail like MAD when she is stalking crickets.

yea my bell used to wiggle her tail and get super excited when hunting also. the more i read, i'm sure it's caudal luring lol. the rat pups i've been giving the bp and the little dum the last week are still a bit small. she's prolly just a bit hungry still.

Sorry for getting off topic I knew that you used to have a Bell as well ;)

As for your snake tail wiggle maybe consider doubling up on her meal? Feeding two items rather than just one? If you think she is still hungry that is.

My corn sometimes does rhis too, think it is partly a defensive thing to confuse predators.

Some species do the caudal luring thing- womas are very well-known in the python world for this, and most colubrids do it. Both my womas do it every time I feed them. My Burms wiggle and wag their tails all over whenever I get them out, or pretty much whenever they are excited. It's adorable and hilarious to see a big ol' bruiser of a python "wagging" its tail.
