new mountain horned dragon

hey guys i have a new mountain horned dragon, wondering if anyone had advice.

my guy seems to not eat hardly and doex not move around, got em a couple dasy ago.

i have a vry healthy beardy and leopard gecko and figured i try out a tropical forest reptile

my mhd is in a 20 gall with uvb coil light a few inches from his purch branch, lots of branches and leaves covering, has a water dish big enough to lie in and has a fish pump bubbling the water, the temps are about 75 up next to the uvb bilb, i use no heat lamps, and about 70 to 72 down near the ground. the humidity is always around 65 to 80 percent. i have an actuall aquarium canopy with the front and back parts screen meshes in for ventalatuon.

im guessing she is wild caught do to nurvousness, and i say she becasue it best resembles a female from google info.

she ate about 6 crixs and few mealworms first day, and have not touched anything past couple days.

I don't have any information about the lizard itself but I have a suggestion. A while ago I was using the coil uvb light temporarily for my bearded dragon and I didn't like it. I noticed it was REALLY bright even to my eyes and he would spend a good chunk of the day closing one or both eyes. I also noticed his appetite slowed down. I don't know if it was because of the coil light but when I changed back to the tube his appetite came back and he kept his eyes open. If it is a must to use that light I would suggest putting it up higher so it is further away from the lizard.

we have a wild caught mountain horned and the key to his comfort and happiness has been a large enclosure with lots and lots of hiding areas! It took him most of a year to gain enough confidence to bask out in the open and eat really well , and he was so afraid of the bubbler we took it out of his water ! We found that if we slowly poured water into his bowl from the top it usually enticed him to jump in! Be patient and let him be a lizard, let him take his time and feel confident , and yes change the coil light!

so i built my mhd a new enclosure to go on top of his 20 gallon tank, i built an extra 3 foot extention, made of pexi glass and screen, with hinged wetal mesh top and front opening door. filed it up with loads of plants, branches, and vines. new 50 watt heat bulb, and uvb bulb canopy. his temps are around 75 in middle. himidity stays around 60 to 70. and with all this "better stuff done" he been worse. the first few days in the 20 gall he would move around a bit, bath in his water, eat a bit. but since i put the new inclosure he just sits at the top, hung on the mesh. he dont move, dont go down to bath and dont eat. oh my, could i have a sick dragon from the pet shop, or maybe he is just really staressed from being moved into the 20 gall and then putting up with two nights of me building stuff around him lol. anyone think he well recover from this. i have a few finish ups to do tommorrow to the enclosure then i can start leavin him alone for a ehile.

i forgot to say i am an expiriences reptile keeper. i have a barded dragon and leopard gecko, who iv been told are the moast healthy and fastes growing reptiles around. so i knows my stuff, and i do hours of research on the interent and keep every ones needs to perfect conditions. so this should not be the ishue.

Mountain horned lizards are actually a VERY difficult animal to keep properly, and healthy.

I believe the OP is referring to a mountain horned dragon, not horned lizard. They are very different, despite the similar name haha.

I would really make sure he has a lot of areas to hide in and alot of privacy , he is most likely wild caught and will need to adjust ! You should cover the back and both sides of his enclosure also to give him more security and make sure he is warm enough with out being too hot!

I don't know much about these guys, but a 2-minute cursory glance at a handful of caresheets makes me think you need a basking spot of 80-90 degrees F. If these guys are anything like other reptiles, without the basking spot, you will have lack of appetite and inability to digest.

No where in your posts do you mention a basking spot, just "75 in the middle." It sounds like a husbandry issue. Get that squared away with some additional "research" and your lizard 'should' get better over time.

all care sheets i have read say no basking spot, they do not bask, thier temps canot get no higher than 84 or they well be harmed. a quike look of any lizard should not be done. i research for weeks. i brought my mhd for a check up this week end. turns out the pet shop took very bad care of it. turns out they covered up the fact that they dont feed enough/ dont dust any of thier food, with the fact that most mountain horns are not active or do not eat much. but after a week of not eating and not moving it was time to bring it back before my warenty was up. when i brought it in to return the other one they had was the same. so i did not bother to get the other. i went to another location a bought a nice healthy ittle water dragon. all i needed was a higher temp, and basking spot and the water dragon loves the enclosure
