What you gonna feed it?

I have a spare 10g. Jk Yes I do lots My friend who has one says they need 3x the length water and 3x land so a full grown large caiman would live comfortably in the Spare bedroom down stairs.

What you gonna feed it?
Chicken (not too much because the additives can affect their offspring and breeding). Live fish in the pond at times (not too much because the oil and scales can be detrimental if used in abundance). Dead fish, deer, steak, any raw meat, road kill, rabbits, bunnies or squirrels.

They cap off at about 8 feet, and while they can be tamed down slightly, will never be calm, and if you touch any part of the mouth or come close for that matter, they will bite down and not let go. If you want a crocodilian that stays smaller, other kinds of caiman get sub 5 feet.

I will NEVER call her tame (she is a female) 5' Tops. I believe I am just raising him for my friend who doesn't have the time or space right now. In a few years if he decides he doesn't want him I would be glad to keep him.

Has someone taught you how to handle crocodilians? It's not too tough, but if done incorrectly can turn sour fast.
At that size you don't have much to worry about, but keep in mind that some teeth will leave the mouth on the side slightly and even if the mouth is taped, if she shakes her head you risk getting your hands torn up pretty badly.
150 isn't a bad deal at all for that animal.

Yea I believe he is asking quite a bit more but I sell him antiques weekly. He has four or five adults and about 14 little guys I have watched him feed and handle. They look slow and he looked comfortable but he told me NEVER feel comfortable they are Fast and unpredictable. Before I purchase her I will be staying longer on my weekly stops to get first hand tips.

Alright, if you have any questions you can't get answered give me a shout, I worked with them at my last 2 jobs. I didn't specifically work with them but once or twice a week for 6 months isn't bad :) Might be able to answer some of them.

Mouthwash is your best friend btw.

Why Mouthwash?

stephanbakir
06-10-11, 09:51 PM
We use mouthwash with larger snakes and monitors+crocodilians that don't want to let go. 1 drop inside the mouth and they let go immediately, use the alcohol free MW

Why Mouthwash?

Sorry frenchman, your wrong on that one.

The mouthwash is mandatory for their breath, its quite foul.

Thats a nice looking animal for sure.. Im not sure I could ever dedicate and entire room of my house to a single creature.... could fit so many more lesser ones in that space.

As usual, pics are mandatory if you get it. :D

I read a recent Reptiles Magazine article that said cleaning out the water filter for their ponds is quite possibly the most disgusting thing in the world. :D

It is, and it needs to be done pretty often.
It LOOKS bad, but doesn't smell as bad as sav poo.

i have been told by a guy who used to have a caimen back in the day, he said they are not all they are cracked up to be, he said it was real cool when it was small, but after like 5-10 years with this thing he said it became a huge chore with no real reward, cant socialize with it, it always hated him and after that many feeding it seesed to be entertaining and was more of a hasle makeing sure he had somone their everytime he stepped downstair to check on it, I think they are so damn cool, but its somthing to consider. like you said if your buddy takes it later that would be sweet, just around the time this might hapen, you would be able to relieve yourself of all the work and still get to be around it, win win if you ask me. If you get this bad boy you better show pics lol im sure half of us will be living vicariously through you on this one for sure :)

Good luck. Are crocodilians legal where you are?

I know that's a joke (I hope) but I personally find it unamusing because there are people who do that.

I refuse to have a pet I can't "play" with... plus I would be all too tempted to through the neighbors god damn yippy dog that barks all god damn day in there.

No, I am not kidding. I want to kill that dog.

But I agree with freebody, I can definitely imagine it getting old after a while.

My neighbour breeds Jack Russells... she has 3 females and 1 male... It's rare that we go 30 minutes without barking -.-

I find this extremely confusing- given that reptiles are solitary animals who instictively want to get away from large mammals for all sorts of various reasons. Reptiles will always do better in a hands off approach to keeping- as to keep down stress on the animal.. How do you "play" with a solitary animal such as a reptile, I know it certainly doesn't work the same way as a social mammal such as a dog!

I think by "play" he means handle rather than throwing a ball for it. :)

Jay
06-23-11, 02:53 PM
Nope I'm sure he meant play dress up:freakedout:
