The ride back home should be fine, they will be in the dark in insulated tubs, minor bumping around from cracks on the road and the occasional scream from inside the car

So true, we have small families living in some of our pot-holes rofl.
Measured one at my cottage last year it was 4 feet long 5 feet wide and almost 3 feet deep (also in Quebec)

I just thought about something, do I need to quarantine my Emp scorps when I get them? I doubt there is anything airborne that passes from arachnids to reptiles but I thought I should ask to be safe.
On a brighter note, I saw a garter chase out of the bush with a frog in his mouth about an hour ago, thing was still jumpin!
whoaxmary
05-24-11, 07:29 AM
Just thought I'd bump this thread since you never got an answer Stephan.
I haven't seen ANY garters yet for some reason. :( I bet that was neat to see~

Long story short last winter I had a curly tail gecko sneak into my luggage when i flew from Cuba to Ottawa. They never found it but I consider myself lucky, I don't plan to push my luck.
HUGE difference from flying compared to taking a bus

Isn't it still using public transportation, crossing provincial lines with animals? I understand that Cuba-Ottawa and Toronto-Gatineau are 2 different things, but I'm assuming I'll at least get some hefty fines thrown at me?

The reason you would have gotten in trouble (jail time if you were unlucky) for the gecko is the animal smuggling laws, its SUPER illigal to bring in animals and to a lesser extent food from other countrys into this one for fear that it will unbalance the natural eco system.
Taking stuff on public transit has nothing to do with it, As long as you keep it in its box the entier time and dont tell anyone about it you will be fine. Even if you do tell people about it you will probly still be fine.
Also grey hound doesnt inspect luggage unless your crossing the US border.
Edit: Just did a little digging, it says in the rules that its fine to bring small pets on board provided they are kept in secured pet carrier appropriate to that pet. I think they are leaning more towards dogs and cats but it doesnt say no herps.

Toronto is in ontario and it has a 3 meter law regarding snakes (snakes with the potential to surpass 3 meters are prohibited) but maby they shipped it to you outside the province.
Was hoping they at least showed them off :(
totheend
05-29-11, 10:36 PM
Toronto has the 3 metre law, not all of Ontario. Just clearing that up because it sounds like you are saying all of Ontario....
stephanbakir
05-29-11, 10:39 PM
Ontario has a 3 meter law, certain cities have laws specific to them them that pardon specific laws if im not mistaken.
totheend
05-29-11, 10:42 PM
Well where I live, we have no by laws at all for reptiles....and it hasn't changed since the 60's...the 3 metre rule is fairly new. It is not all of Ontario. Other Cities have adopted Torontos 3 metre rule though.
dshin963
05-30-11, 06:56 AM
Its is generally just major cities that have the 3 meter bylaw such as the GTA and Ottawa I believe small cities such as Peterborough do not
kriminaal
05-30-11, 07:05 AM
There are many different by-laws in other areas as well.
I know an area near me has the snake by-law (just outside of kitchener-waterloo)
as well as a lizard restriction of 2 or 3 feet. I forget the specifics on that.
i have like 30 plus photos i edited to upload should i make a new thread just for the photos,
Hahaha also Toddy tickles from 102.1 the edge interviewed me at the reptile expo and i was on the radio this morning, such dumb questions, and i think he changed some of my answers

Reptilia (a reptile zoo in toronto) had a display outside the building and there was 1 retic on display....but inside the actual event, i only say dwarf retics for sale....first time i've actually seen dwarf retics and they are absolutely gorgeous! i want one so bad....but i prob need to gain a little more experience before jumping into that
stephanbakir
05-30-11, 09:49 AM
Because SD retics get small allot of people try and buy them, besides the crazy feeding response and the fact that they are stronger then anything but annies in their size group they do make fantastic pets.

what do you mean by crazy feeding response? and how big approx do they get?
stephanbakir
05-30-11, 08:33 PM
Female retics are longer and larger then males, and female SD retics max out at about... 8-9 feet. Retics in general throw themselves at their meals, some don't if they were swapped to F/T early enough and fed without shaking the food to entice them.
SD retics also grow slower then other lines, a normal size tiger should reach 8-9 feet by the first year, where as a normal sized sunfire should hit 7-8 feet in the first year.
If you want the smallest SD possible I'd advise asking breeders about the size of the parents, and looking towards sunfires because they generally get much shorter then other morphs.

what do you mean by crazy feeding response? and how big approx do they get?
My SD certainly has the strongest feeding response of any of my snakes, he gets fed on a plate in his viv and i have to hide the plate until his viv is open then suddenly put it in the viv and shut the door quick, the second he sees the plate, even from across the room, he goes into food mode and will strike at ANYTHING hot. He has struck at the guard around his ceramic heatbulb just cos its hot.
One day i slid the door too far open when i put his rat in, he struck four foot across his viv and then around the door and back another six inches or so and nearly got me. He is crazy and unpredictable when food is around.
When there is no food he is the calmest most relaxed snake i know, i use hi. As a demostrator when i do talks at schools and the kids love him, he gets stroked and prodded by them and just sits there wrapped around my arm without a care in the world. I can even rub his head between his eyes with zero reaction. I just hope that when we do school visits noone produces a plastic plate............. ;)
