Seriously. I HAVE to go herping and it is usually a fruitless endeavor. A few summers ago I went herping ALL weekend and I saw nothing. I went to my parents place about 100 miles south of here the next day. I was asked to go across the street to the laundromat to swap clothes into the dryer. I get right outside the building and there is a gorgeous little ringneck chilling by the steps. I mention it to my mother and she says " oh yeah, he is there all the time."

It's so weird how similar the species are that you would find on a hike through western oregon, or Waynes backyard.
I've got a soft spot for red-sided garters, had an incredibly mellow one as a pet at a very young age (~6). Unfortunately the poor guy died... Heart broken little kid I was.
Haven't seen a salamander in forever though! Not since living in the portland area, we had a ton of orange-bellies running around my childhood home.
Lucky man you are Wayne, looks like you do a great deal to support the reptile population on your land.

I only have the ability to do that on two forums, Otherwise I start new threads because a lot of people overlook the ongoing pictures I add all summer long.

Yes he is in the blue, He was hiding when I lifted up the board.
I took the picture and then put him back under his hide.
Confession - I place large sheets of wood in prime locations and leave them there so snakes will hide under them.
It's time to walk my dogs right now, I will take the camera with me, it's 6:52 am and the sun has not yet started to warm up the ground... Let's see what is under there this morning.:)

Not one single snake this morning.
One time I lifted this up (sheet on the left) and there was 7 snakes under it at once.

Since I run a park for a living, people traffic is a way of life.
There are people camping in my woods right now, but it pays the bills.
I always give the snake lecture to anyone who camps here, Folks are told right up front that all habitats are off limits.
Most likely when I finish up the big habitat project, I will have a camera up on a pole monitoring it so I can catch any trespass activity quickly.

Agreed ! I can't wait to have a bit of property someday. I'll be hurling plywood and corrugated roofing scraps all over heh. We're moving into a house ( rent/ potential to buy) end of the month and there is a bunch of wood scraps left in the garage I plan on piling up in a corner of the yard. See if it yields anything. I'm skeptical, herping in the capital region is fairly poor. I'm almost tempted to relocate some ring necks I found at work into the yard.
stephanbakir
07-03-11, 09:09 AM
Whats gona stop them from wanderin? You got food for them on the property?
Coffee Black
07-03-11, 09:46 AM
A joke, sir. I wasn't really going to relocate them. There is food but I generally leave stuff be if possible. I did move them into the woods as they were a tad too close to the road behind the store.
stephanbakir
07-03-11, 10:33 AM
I move animals in direct risk, like when we built my aunts house, she tore down the forest to make her yard/room for the house (i rebelled and lost). I got her to hold the build for 2 weeks and relocated the animals in the area to a more rural environment.

I operate my business in a very Eco friendly manner.
Maybe once every other year or so I find a snake run over on my track, but thats about it.
In the mean time all the hard pack offers prime basking when it's quiet out there.
On any given early morning stroll it's likely to encounter a snake or two sunning itself on the track.
