Floating Boxes as Reptile Home

So while watching a designing channel in an attempt to bore myself to sleep I saw someone talking about a design for organizing called "Floating Boxes". Basically looking like this:

Now I know this sounds epically crazy but I cannot get the idea out of my head of the idea of using something similar as Vivs for reptiles that didn't need a lot of space, epic amounts of heat, ect. Of course have them glassed off, ventilation, doors, ect. But basically having these somewhat built in Vivs all over a wall.

The only problem I see is heating. The wiring for everything would be insane!! No I don't think I will be attempting this at any time soon since this isn't my home I live in...but the idea is still there.

So what do ya'll think?

Get any North American colubrid, and skip heat altogether.

A garter snake would do fine in something like that with nothing more than room lighting and no heat at all.

So basically a hognose, corn snake, garter, milk, and the like can easily live in a box of the right size setup like that? It would be an interesting idea for an office/reptile room.

Are there any lizards that could go in a setup like this? If I ever did do it I wouldn't want just snakes ;)

Anoles and geckos come to mind. the Texas climate would be all the heat they need.

Thanks for the info. Maybe this will inspire some creative housing for reptiles :) Maybe one day I can have a house with a nice large office space to do this with.

The only concern i would have would be the addtional weight of substrate, water bowl, hides etc hanging off the walls (tho we can barely hang shelfs on our walls as they are so pathetically plastered - never buy a house from a "handyman"!!)

I used an old bookshelf to do this with.. works a charm.

I've got a large 4 foot by 1 foot version of that one you have on the bottom right (the one with metal edges) and it weighs a TON lol

I have the same big tank too, I got it for free because it leaks water.

The "poster" is a blanket I have hung over the window to keep prying eyes from looking in.

Neena, that would be AWESOME, if of course, you could provide proper husbandry. But Wayne's species selection would make it much more feasible, even on a budget!

Hmmm....a rack built into the wall....maybe someday when I'm not trying to finish my final degree...

IKEA used to have a wall-mounted cabinet with sliding glass doors that I had considered modifying into a reptile enclosure. The random wall-mounting does look really neat.

So, my gears are turning already. That would be amazing. An easy way to hide cords and things would be to run them through PVC pipe and paint it the same color as the wall. Maybe mount the enclosure close to the corner of the room so you could run the pipe in the corner where it would be less noticeable. Or, if you are really adventurous, put an outlet above or below the enclosure with a cabinet to hide all the wires and things. I think I may have to try this now.......:hmm:

I want a dozen of these to house my tarantulas , hubby and i were just discussing how to fit all of them after we move them up to their final enclosures!! This would be perfect!

Wow I am glad so many people like this idea! Now someone who actually owns their own home HAS to try it.
