Profile: Tigers Eye

This week Living Gems Reptiles profiles one of its juvenile animals, Tigers Eye. Tigers Eye is an August 2009 female, and is half-sister to Citrine, who we profiled last month. She has an odd personality quirk whereby she always seems always seems to limit her tongue flicking when held compared to our other snakes. As of March 2011, she weighed 514 grams.

Beautiful. Always wanted a rainbow ever since I saw one at my local pet shop for $375... How easy is breeding with these guys?

For what kind of a BRB, i assume it had to be some sort of morph for that much!! i got mine for $75, plus a trade.

Was 100% normal female BRB, someone actually paid that much too.. Lol, I might pick one up at the expo if I see one for a good price.

Love the outside pic the most. MORE.

Petshops charge TONS more than animals are worth. A local one here had the muddiest JCP I've ever seen and it was $279. I held it though and it had a great disposition and i had to keep from reaching for my wallet haha.

As always another beautiful Rainbow. The thing with it's tongue my Borneo does that to. I do have one question about Tigers Eye would it be possible to see a picture of her head?

Top quality normals can easily command $375, or even more. I’ve paid that much myself for several of my snakes…though, admittedly, I’m shooting pretty high. You are correct that pet shops will often sell average (or worse) animals for inflated prices. As for picking one up at an expo, just be careful. Shows always carry two risks: the best animals in a litter are rarely sold there (much better prices to sell them direct over the Internet), and you can always bring home a disease or parasite. I find that most of the rainbows sold at those events are on the average or even brown side anyways, produced by people who do them as a sideline rather than a main focus. As with everything you get what you pay for.

Breeding is never a sure thing, but not overly complex. As with many boids, you need to cool them first. I’m having mixed success so far this year: one looks gravid, one I’m not sure of…and it’s the pair that bred the most that is not clear!

Thanks for the nice comments on Tigers Eye. Outside picts rock with this species, but are harder to get: the snakes don’t like sitting still with all these new smells and sensations around. LOL, she does in fact have a head -- you can see the very tip of it in the center picture, off to the right. She’s just a shy little lass.

On the other hand, since Lil asked so nicely, I *guess* I could stop the picts…. ;-)

She kind of looks like a Anaconda in that picture. I am sure you know, but most people don't know that Rainbows are cousin to Anacondas.

That surprised me too when I learned it. In this case, I think it's the "flatness" of her head that imparts that look.

BTW, feeding night was last night, and Tiger managed to latch her mouth on to the tongs instead of the rodent's head. With the smell of rat strong and her body coiled around warm prey, it was a bit before she realized something was amiss....
