Anyways, There was a post made tonight by a fella who just recommended to a person to use a 100 watt basking light over a 10 gallon tank to a member from Jacksonville Florida.:eek:

I posted immediately after that this would kill a garter snake in a day or less because Jacksonville has many days per year that the average temps are already 100 degrees, and a basking lamp would only bring the temps up even higher.

The highest recommended cage temp is 88 degrees.

The person who posted this advice is trying to say I'm wrong ;)

So as an experiment to prove my point, I set up a ten gallon tank, Lined the bottom with cage carpet and put a hide in it, then placed a screen cover over the top complete with the recommended 100 watt basking lamp. (NO snake is in the cage)

My ambient room temp is 71 degrees (F) and in 20 minutes time the interior of that tank is already 110 degrees.

Imagine how high that would be on a July afternoon in Florida when it's 100 degrees ambient.:mad:

These animals prefer streams, marshes & bogs for a reason, they like nice cool temperatures.

The temp is at 110.5 now:eek: and my kitchen is at 71 degrees.

If I was in Florida, that cage could bake a muffin!!

It's been an additional 20 minutes, I think we hit the peak.

Its actually frightening when you are searching anywhere for advice on snake husbandry. Soooo much bad advice out there. People don't always mean harm, but giving advice about something you aren't educated about can kill a snake.... Scary for new snake owners such as myself.

That is why you have to do vast research, talk to breeders, and other owners. That is why places like this is just so cool. Cause you have all of that within one community. And if someone gives really bad information there is always someone there to tell you they were wrong...and usually a good reason why.

I am so happy I found this site!! Saved me from taking bad advice and having my snake suffer from it. I don't have any friends that have snakes, so its great to have reliable support and help whenever I need it on here :D

Good job setting this guy straight. Sadly, if I had a dime for every snake that was cooked (or dried out by a "heat lamp") by its owner, I'd have a really nice sports car right now. :confused:

if your room temp is 71 and after 20 mins, the tank is 110,

thas a difference of 39 degrees, using alittle science;

if the room temp was to be 100f, then the tank temp would be anywhere between 140 - 150f,

that temp would kill most snakes, so good on you wayne for putting someone right.

The human brain is such a wonderful thing, if people would just use it for something beside keeping echos out of their skull.

Remember this, The next time your children take something apart out of curiosity, don't yell at them for it.. Really I mean this.

Sit down with them and explain how the thing works and what role each part plays in it's function.

The desire to know how things work is a healthy sign of intellect, and constantly scolding them for natural curiosity can cause them to shut this hunger for knowledge off.

People often fail to consider the location and climate (temperature and humidity) of a person seeking advice, factors which can radically alter what's required to maintain proper husbandry and can lead to incorrect and sometimes dangerous advice.

One of the most fun motorcycles I ever owned was a $25 pile of scrap metal that some guy completely disassembled, I mean completely, there was not one fastener undone.

all the bolts were in a box.

I rode it over to the dudes house the next day, he was fit to be tied.:eek:
