Hi everyone. I thought I'd share a couple of shots that I took last weekend of a Black Adder. I've only seen a few of these in the wild and I was thrilled to capture these shots of this beautiful snake. I'll post all my photos of wild British reptiles on this thread from now on.
Best regards,
Jason

Thanks for your comments. Stephan you're the only person that has mentioned the 'Lord of the Rings' look about the eyes. That was my first thought when I started photographing Adders!
A found a couple of toads in the car park at work today so I thought I'd share them with you.

You have a talent for capturing these awesome shots. How far were you from the Adders to get them?
JaySteel
07-15-11, 03:37 PM
Thanks very much. I'm usually about 2ft away from the snakes I'm photographing but sometimes a little closer. I'm always just outside of their striking range.

Figured you were really really close or had a hell of a zoom on your equipment LOL Good for those snakes being so cooperative.

Thank you both. This Adder is just about to slough so the eye scale has that blue tint. I also photographed this Adder back in the Spring just after it had sloughed and the snake had a green tint to it then. It's a shame that Adders don't retain these mating colours after the Spring as these dull shades of brown are not nearly as attractive.

Jason

Jason, your website is phenomenal. I love that you put information about the adders between the photos. All of your work is commendable. Keep putting up more! :)

Thank you both. I really appreciate your kind words of encouragement. I'm always adding more photos to my website. The squirrels one were taken on Sunday. All the reptiles here are just about to start hibernating so I may not get to add any more snake photos until about March next year.

Hi everyone. I was out in the garden today picking up leaves and cutting back the brambles. Much of my garden is left for the frogs so it doesn't get too much maintenance. I found several frogs hoping around whilst picking up the leaves. This is not uncommon as I've always had frogs there for the last 27 years. Today though they looked distinctly different. My frogs are always green but these ones were pretty red in colour. I know red frogs are not rare in the UK but they are to my garden. The frog in the first photo was pretty huge for a common frog in the UK. It looked like it had come straight from the gym! lol

are frogs capable of changing colors like chameleons?
JaySteel
10-29-11, 01:44 AM
No, not to the same degree. Some frogs including the European Common Frog above can lighten or darken their skin tones to match their surroundings but they can't actually change colour. The Common Toad in the UK does the same thing. When I find toads under logs or piles or debris they are often very dark in colour. Once disturbed they become active, their blood starts to flow around their bodies and their skin quickly changes to a much lighter shade and their colour is revealed.
