Oh ILMP congrats! I am glad we have yet another hoggie owner around here! He looks adorable. Does he bluff at you a lot? I have heard that males bluff more than girls but I am not sure on how founded that is overall. Also I wanna see a clearer pic of him eventually.

yh he does bluff alot, all hes done is hiss since i got him home, but it is very funny though, hes in a RUB at the moment and all hes tried is escaping lol, ive already seen his hood, that was straight after taking the pics above, i have to say it, but hes an adorable cutey and ive falling in love with hoggies, his up turned snout is cute.

im in the middle of sorting out his own 2ft viv, i will be using a heat lamp for him as i think that would be better as i will be using a mixture of sand and coconut fibre substrate for it and once its finished, i will defo be putting a pic of the finished viv up aswell

The sooner you can let him settle the better. Some hoggies can be sensitive about things sometimes. And though he is older he could go off feed for some time if stressed to much.

Rather than just be critical why dont you share your extensive knowledge, for the benefit of the snake if nothing else?

Thank you Lanky. I have actually been talking with ILMP on PM and he is doing just fine by his hoggie by all that he has told me. Only a few small errors that have been easy to work out. He is doing fine and is planning a good home without any problems.

It seems everyone just wants to criticize without sharing any REAL knowledge these days. Sure criticize if you want but back up your criticism with hard facts and personal experience. If you can't provide the facts and experience DON'T provide the criticism.

At least you can find someone in 2 hours. I don't trust anyone anywhere NEAR us with good reptiles. Supplies are decent enough, but not the reptiles themselves.

I mean more or less for looking at purposes. I usually buy from breeders. I have never bought an animal from them. They have two illegal animals there that they have "cleverly" renamed to try to avoid inquiry. Alligator snapping turtle called a " spiny water turtle" and a Nile Monitor they have listed as an " Egyptian River Lizard" haha. I believe they are no longer for sale and they had them before the 2005 ban but I don't know how the grandfathering works here.

LOL I have seen pet stores do similar things in other states. Try to rename them in order to sell them and no get caught. Funny thing is informed people will be more than happy to let authorities know about the "error" the pet stores were doing.

And on another note I couldn't IMAGINE housing an Alligator Snapping Turtle as a pet.

sweet. i breed them. you'll want belly heat and use shredded aspen for bedding. they like to burrow, so make sure there's about 5" in there.

thanks venom, yh hes my first as i wanted something more managable that i cant introduce my child to after he/she is born and not have to worry about the size, and i thought that a 2ftish hoggie would be perfect and intresting for the child to watch when he does his "bluff dance" lol

What if it bites your child? A hognose is not a snake I would give to a young child!

Our six year old touches out hoggie without a problem. He knows the rules and is responsible. I wouldn't outright say that my child can hold the snake unsupervised but I don't think a hoggie would be considered a dangerous snake to look at or touch. There are worse, far more dangerous non-venomous snakes out there I wouldn't let my son get near, but a hognose isn't one of them.

Worked at a zoo for 5 years showing off snakes to kids and adults alike. Had plenty of 3-6 year olds touch our two hognose snakes without a problem. Like with any animal you have to supervise. But anyone with kids should know the kid is more dangerous to the animal than the animal the kid...so to speak.

Just my own opinion.

His child isn't born yet so the comment made it sound like he is going to give a hooded up huffing hognose to his baby to hold!

When it does the "funny bluff dance" as ILMP calls it, thats not really the time to get the snake and hand it to a child surely of any age? My hognose has just started to calm down now but would also musk while hissing and puffing at me. It's not a funny dance, it's a warning, back off I'm scared. Obviously an adult can continue to handle, as I did to calm the snake and get it used to being held but IMO a huffing hissy hognose is not a play thing nor is it there to entertain a child.

Have I made my point ok, not too harsh, not gonna get people all offended?

At no point did he say he was going to let the new born baby hold the snake - he said intorduce to it and for the child to WATCH it do the hissy dance.

Our daughter was 3 when we got our snakes she is now nearly 5 - she wouldnt ever be allowed to open one of the reptile cages and the only snake she ever has held with TOTAL supervision is our yearling corns.

The rest of the reptiles she is allowed to stroke whilst me or the wife hold them - ensuring that should they bite they will get us not her. This is what i gathered from the word "introduce".

finally finished the viv so pictures will be taken and put up later, oh and for the record, a child can be introduced to a snake without even touching it, via watching it through the glass, i would never have a new born around while ive got the animal in my hands, lankyrob, your very much right with what u said and how you gathered from what i previously said.

and as for the hissy dance, for a child, that would be funny!

Nice home. All that foliage is gonna make for some great hiding places along with the two hides you seem to have. It seems a bit on the short side...not as long. Though that could be just a personal thing. Since it doesn't seem to be a normal size like you find in aquariums I wouldn't really know. Though as long as the snake can get a hot side with an UTH and a cool side where it isn't should be okay...

I need to find me some leaves and such for my girl. She might feel much more secure that way. Also on your first picture of him in his home...he seems ready to do that hissy dance LOL
