He's a water monitor (Varanus salvator). My husband and I couldn't agree on what breed of dog to get, but we both agreed on getting Darwin! And fair play to him, he acts like a scaley dog ;)

How old is he?
According to the woman we adopted him from he was almost a year old when we got him and that was December 2009. So going by that, he'd be about 2 years old now.

These guys tend to shoot up in length fast their first year (about 50% of their adult length!) and then grow more slowly in their subsequent years. He was just over 3ft when we got him, but wasn't being fed correctly (she was still feeding him mainly bugs!) so we're not sure if his growth will be stunted by that, or that he was housed in a 3ft viv :(

He's got our smallest bedroom at the moment which we've "Darwin-Proofed". He's got a couple ramps for basking areas, and a large under bed storage box for a soaking tub if he desires. We also ordered a Kane Heat mat (they're used as pig heaters) that we give him during the cooler months to sit on at night for supplemental heat (statted of course to a comfortable 75 F night temperature for him). We had the hardest time finding one in the UK, but after months searching we got one! They're compeletely water proof, and can take pigs trodding on them all day, so this will last Darwin for ages!

LOOOVE water monitors. Wish we could have them here. And that I even had room. I need to move to a state that allows retics, all monitors and hybrid dogs. Oh and that gives away large houses with cheap taxes haha.
