this is my male hypo boa BCI, 8 weeks old around 18-20 inches!! this is my first boa. i might need some help along the way, but i did alot of research prior to picking this guy up, if you dont mind can any one tell me their feeding schedules for their male boas i dont want to power feed/ under feed i dont need him getting huge in the first year or all fat just a healthy boa? i see alot of breeders with smaller males ive seen 3-5 year old males ranging from 4-4.5 feet while the females are huge and make them look like colubrids haha ( not really but way smaller) what do they do to keep them so small?? just something ive been wanting to ask, to see if anyone knew??

(quick iphone 4 pic, better ones tonight from a real cam) at the breeders house

i always wanted to ask why "2006gt" lol.... i am a HUGE mustang fanatic, i sadly has to sell mine 2 yrs ago due to having 200,000 miles, and tons of stuff going wrong with her...

but as soon as i graduate, im looking at an 13-15 gt (depending on the year i graduate)

and thats deff. NOT a good gas saver AHAH

I'm the only person i know who refuses to drive unless i have to lol. I CAN drive quite well, but every time anything moves no matter how subtle my eyes follow it. Even a leaf falling from a tree, my eyes will follow it to the ground every time :(

I wouldn't be a very responsible driver.

I cant believe you got that boa for $35!!1 he is an amazing hypo, I see hypos like that sell for 200-300 easliy lol

I would just feed him once a week till he is a yr old then once every 2 wks. Males in general are smaller then females, breeders keep their males extra small because a big male boa could very well intemidate the female, be to strong for her and could cause her to not accept his attention and ovulate!! The skinny wirey ones ALWAYS do a better job at gettng it done then the bigger heftier ones females are feed alittle more because they need that extra body weight to sustain them while they are gravid and carring babies!!

Good luck with your hot little hypo, you got a gem! If you have any more questions Im always here to help

thanks jen, yeah when he emailed me the price i thought he forgot a number hahaha i went and picked him out right away he has a good personality, and loves to sit on the branch all coiled up, and i have his ambient at 83-85 and hot spot is 92 im using a 60 watt che with the cage half covered with chloroplast( plastice material to help keep the humidity in) and he seems happy i fed him and he accepted faster than i thought, he isnt all wiery like my milks, which is awesome. i would like him to be around the 5 foot mark i was reading that people feed there male boas bigger meals every 2 weeks?? (rats) cause mice are not good enough for boas less nutritious but im going to feed him larger rat pinks every week for now. any other quick pointers you could give me??

Jendee
04-20-11, 11:50 AM
Yes rats are good, I dont recommend mice alot of boa breeders feed mice to keep the cost of feeding down and to keep there boas small so they can stay in there baby tubs longer. Probably for cheaper shipping cost as well. Its not fair because the snake doesnt get the proper nutrition!! Once it gets to where you no longer see a slight lump in his belly after feeding then its time to move up a size. I dont like to feed items so big that they still have a lump in there belly 24 hrs later, But big enough to see something same day as feeding. I keep my ambient right at 80 with a hot spot on 92 humidity at 60% for shedding purposes your gonna wanna bump up the humdity 10 points. I think its important for boas to have belly heat they need to have something to sit on to help digest their food properly. Sounds like you got it pretty covered so far!! :)

yeahh i have the zoo-med uth at 92 with a thermostat- didnt specify haha my bad and the che is on the other side to have a better ambient temp and it stays about 83-85 in the whole tank and on the floor under the che its the same as ambient (if that makes sense) hahaha and im using repti bark on my boa and ball python and since i switched over from aspen and misting in the morning and night my ball python had a perfect shed last night and it was all rolled up! last shed with aspen not so good:/..... so im sticking to how i have it i think its working good my bp is growing like a weed( Switched her to rats) and thanks again for your help jen!!

ohh i totally missed the part were you said 80 ambient-92 hot spot ill adjust it tonight to that!!

i don't believe the nutrient value of rats and mice is all that different. however, there are differences between life stages in both types of rodents. adults have fully developed endoskeletons which can provide more calcium. however, worn out breeders might not have much nutrients left in them at all. and pinkies are softer which might make it easier for the snake to absorb nutrients.

yes, i keep boas among many other things. the snake in my avatar is an albino burmese from amazon reptile in covina, ca. the gentleman about to put it in his mouth is alice cooper.

not really sure i can add more advice. boas are relatively easy to keep and they are good natured. from what i have read so far, jendee is an expert at keeping boas, so i would definitely listen to what she says.
