Nah, as long as you house them appropriately and keep them out of high traffic areas they seem to do just fine. Be careful on those hot summer days though, they are pretty sensitive to heat, they seem to secrete a liquid solution in efforts to cool off, but that only leads to a swampy enclosure...

I found my first ball 5 years ago. The second one popped up a year later.
Unexpectedly I came to find that I was the owner of a third.
I had planned on breeding at some point but decided I'd rather have them on display instead.

Some research has indicated keeping your balls in a small confined space will have ill effects on their size, after all, who wants tiny balls? Other sources would tell you they feel their balls feel more secure and protected in a small confined space, I on the other hand think that if anyone or anything had any ill intentions for your balls, they would have that much easier of a time finding them and causing them harm in said small space.
I prefer a different route, I would let both roam freely in a fairly open space, and although one is considerably larger than the other, they both seem to get along and thrive in said conditions. Also as I said before, balls are very susceptible to heat, a more open space will allow more airflow and limit the swampy enclosure effect that would be highly exaggerated in a smaller space.
I'm glad you're learning, inexperienced owners always seem to be intrigued by my balls and their habitat. I've experimented with many different habitat and exercise techniques over the years, I seem to have my husbandry pretty dialed these days.

I would have to disagree, I like to handle my balls at least once a day, this of course has gone on for 10+ years and I haven't seen any ill effects become of it. Although on the days boredom strikes, chaffing seemed to develope with over handling.

I almost brought up my one eye snake in this thread..
But when I thought about how the clutch he came from had a couple snakes born with no eyes, it kinda lost its humour to me.

anyways, joking aside, the breeder gave me a Mexican garter snake for free because he didn't want to sell a one eyed snake.
he euthanized the blind ones.
the healthy siblings wound up getting shipped to Japan, so he and I are in possession of extremely rare (in private US collections) Mexican species Garter Snakes.
I named him Cheech, and he's doing great. I just have to make sure I photograph him from his good side, it avoids a lot of questions that way.
That's interesting, he gets a long just fine with only one eye?

Of course, there are no birds in my house trying to eat him.
Speaking of, I saw a raven take a robin right out of my yard today.. the robin didn't even have a chance, that big black bird swooped down and grabbed it that fast.
back on to snakes.. Ravens and crows have a taste for garter snake livers, they will peck the liver out and leave the snake to die on the ground. (trivia you probably didn't want to know)

I actually already knew that, they like toad livers even more so! But the toads take a little longer to die, and in the right conditions actually explode from explode from air accumulation from the resulting punctured lung.

Yeah, I'm a sucker for hardship cases.
I take on slews of non feeders every year, I lose a few and some turn around and start eating, those are the ones that make it worthwhile.
